I just watched Santosh Sivan's Malli at the Indian Film Festival in LA.

when I google for "Malli" it returns results for "The Terrorist". The characters name in The Terrorist is also apparently "Malli". I missed the first five minutes or so of "Malli" at the theater. Are Malli and The Terrorist two different movies...or are they the same movie?

I think they are 2 different movies, but the characters have same name "Malli". anyway, is Malli available on DVD?

I liked this movie very much!

Actually they are two different films. Malli is another Tamil film made the year before The Terrorist. Malli is an excellent film but has never been seen by many people as it was released all but too briefly. I was lucky to catch it at the London Film Festival, which I always attend. The plot is about a village girl who goes deep into the jungle to help find a cure for her mute friend. Its almost a surreal experince...very much like a Hayozaki film.

The film was a box-office flop. However this did not stop Sivan from making children's film. After The Terrorist he directed Halo, one of his best looking movies ever. The storyline is simply about a young girl who looks for her missing dog admist the chaos life of Mumbai.
-------------------------
Sivan has finished working on Bride and Prejudice and is planning his next film as director Prithvi, an action film.

It depends on which Malli you're refering to. The Terrorist was actually re-titled Malli in some countries and Sivan did also make a kids film called Malli, I guess he likes the name. Sivan's films are known for their excellent cinematography (e.g Asoka).

I don't know if Malli (the kids film) is out on DVD, but I know the Terrorist has 2 versions on DVD, of which the Tartan (UK) version is the one to get.

The Terrorist was actually re-named Maali not Malli. Though similar in spelling both have different prononuciations.

Maali (Mul-Li) - Tamil
Malli (Ma-Li) - Hindi

Malli is not out on DVD as the right Onwers (Shrinagar films) have not yet embarked on DVD in India. Im sure it will as the DVD format is growing at an alarming rate in urban cities around India.

Why was it renamed? Was there another film called "The Terrorist"? Even in Tamil script it is written as "te-ra-rist."

Santosh Sivan is working on a new Mallu movie called APARICHITAN (stranger) along with cinematographer Jeeva. The movie is directed by his younger brother Sanjeev Sivan.

As I said the Tartan (UK) version is the one to go for.
