There are many, willing to pay the price for a good DVD. Many of us bought, and are happy with, Metrodome ASOKA for $ 40 US, Fr. DEVDAS for $ 40 US, YRF K3G for $ 25 US, Warrior for $ 20 US, where as average price an Indian DVD sells for is $ 10 and most are not worth it.

What took you so long? :P

What took you so long?

You mean time in replying or in buying the DVDs??

I replied in 95 min. It's not excessive, is it?? Consider, I'm not on the net all the time.

It didn't take me too long to buy those quality DVDs, I mentioned above, after good reports came out. (BTW, just recd 2 copies of Diaphana Devdas)

VHS is an outdated consumer video format and has nothing to do
with the issue. Current telecines are component digital and not analogue
composite VHS. That you can't use VHS for a quality DVD is cystal
clear and has nothing to do with using restoration procedures or not.
The issue is whether to use EE, DNR, color manipulation, contrast
manipulation and other digital tools to 'improve' the picture. I say: NO,
unless it makes the DVD actually look more like the film master used,

The use of the word VHS was for referrence only in regards to visualization of the end product only; didn't realised I have to spell it out! If no degree of restoration is done on older prints then this is what you will get and what you will not want! On newer prints I still say some degree of restoration is needed if you want Hollywood quality.

VHS has got nothing to do with it unless they use VHS anywhere in
the mastering chain. Visualisation of the end product? What the heck
are you talking about? The DVD does not look like VHS if you don't
restore the Indian DVD company way. On the contrary.
Also, I made it clear I don't want Hollywood quality film look, I want the look of the film as it is, whether that is low budget b movie or high gloss
Bollywood A movie (which can look as polished like Hollywood at times).

Coming to Prasad and PAL-NTSC. They do that only when they receive the source on tapes in PAL format. If they are given negatives, they ALWAYS will do direct NTSC. With Hindi movies, they almost always receive source on Digi-Tapes in PAL format unlike Tamil and Telugu movies which they usually get negatives. So, it's not prasad's problem. It's Yash Raj's problem!
[/quote]
If this is such a common case they should convince Yash Raj to make
either a NTSC master or a PAL with 4% speedup and no extra fields.
Then it's possible to use all the fields, resample to NTSC resolution
direct digital and add the pulldown. This gives a progressive NTSC
DVD with almost the same quality as the PAL if the downsampling is
good. Prasad does hardly have the necessary equipment but it might
be worth investing in it.

I'm curious as to the quality of the film processing labs in India. Even on recent films I see frame damage in DVD transfers, but I don't know whose fault this is, and I wonder how much grain and/or dust there is in the prints that the DVDs always show DNR artifacts, unless Prasad is putting their machines on autopilot for the cheaper companies. It is on DEI discs as well.

A few minutes of Lagaan had a vertical scratch on the left side. I remember reading in The Spirit of Lagaan that the process of making the prints was very close to the release date. This could have something to do with it?

They suck. Their prints lack quality and color consistancy. They make you really appreciate the pristine prints of hollywood labs like deluxe and technicolor.
