Yes you do! Only then will it be profitable to give Hollywood quality. Most Indian dvd's probably sell 10,000 copies, if that much in it's initial release. Now equate that with cost of the rights, authoring, pressing, advertising and distribution. :P

In Telugu, I know of only one DVD that sold over 2000. Most around 1K.

Yeah I know I probably overestimate the amount, but I was guessing at 4,000 rental companies worldwide with two copies each! another 600 or so on Zulm and the balance on collectors! Still not enough copies to warrant full restoration and proper telecine transfer etc, We may not want to admit it but for those that buy or rent 2 in 1, dupes and pirates are partially to blame for the deplorable condition of The Indian DVD industry. :P

Are you sure it is only 2 copies? One of the stores I go to, which is a dedicated audio/video store, usually has about 4-6 copies of many new releases. They later sell them off used and keep one or two for rental. A grocery store I rent from usually has 2-3.

New films don't need a full restoration, so there isn't an excuse for a Munnabhai or Khakee to look like they do. Something is wrong when Andaz Apna Apna looks better than those films. Eros is not some cash-strapped little mom-n-pop, they are probably the world's largest Hindi theatrical and video distributors. If Ayngaran and Tamilini can do it with a smaller audience base, so can Eros.

They sell a lot of dupes, but I don't think dupes of say, Kal Ho Na Ho, come out on the same day as the original. Hollywood quality isn't possible, but I would like to see minimum quality of Ayngaran level (pre-Kaaka Kaaka) or K3G level, at least on the big hits. It would be great if they could all match Mission Kashmir, but that's a pipe dream.

Hey Dragun, In your over zealousness to respond to a thread you often make contradictory statements.

A little advise mere yaar:
When you choose a side on any issue stay on that side no matter what.
Do not ride the fences. When you so that it only shows that you are not firm in your beliefs.

When you are proven wrong be man enough to admit it and do not attempt to beat about the bush.

Discussion does not mean fighting. With discussion opinions do change.

On one hand, you are asking him to be firm and on the other hand you are asking him to admit. It is you who is contradicting.

We know and understand what DragunR2 means. You don't.

True! If they choose to do it all, and they should because ALL FILM source needs some degree of restoration, it still requires some basic procedures. For example dust and dirt removal, scratches, noise suppression, image stabilsation, color conversion, flickering correction etc. This cost money and if they are not able to sell enough copies to recoup the cost, then it is highly unlikely that they will perform these basic steps.

They probably are the largest, but I can not answer for their financial strenght or their ability to do full restoration, guaging from the last couple of years and the financial woes plaguing some mighty big US Corporation, some of them eventually went bellyup, it is no longer a safe bet to assume that because a company is huge that they are financially sound. Ayngaran and Tamilini are unchartered territories for me and the portal is very tiny as presented here on zulm not enough for me to make an assessment.
