So who decides to whom the DVD rights of a movie go? Who decides which company will get to author and release the DVD? I assume the producer does, but I strongly doubt that as I cannot imagine a producer who's happy with the DVD quality Indian DVD's usually have. :?
I mean, if I were to produce a film, I would make sure that the film would be available on the best possible DVD quality.

Also, can the DVD rights of a movie go to more companies at the same time? This because I find it strange that a lot of movies - especially the new ones - are available by more DVD companies than one.

If the producers do decide these things, then we are the ones who have to make them clear that as the audience we do not appreciate the quality and simply WILL NOT buy them if this won't change. I know it will change eventually, but we have to e-mail etc. all those people who have anything to do with good movies to make clear how much we appreciate the movies but hate the qualities.

Whoever puts down the most money on the table. Many producers and directors could not care less who buys and messes with their movies. (They do care when it comes to piracy, usually resulting in hypocritical spastic attacks in producers and directors).

Anwar,
Just like in any business, who ever offers the highest price to the producer, gets the rights. Making money in movie business is a myth (at least at the highest level) as you make money on one and lose on many.

Whoever gets the rights decides on how they make DVD. Some companies like to stick to highest quality possible without making hole in the pocket. Some, make a living on DVD business and hence compromise on quality as they can save a lot over an year period.

Once you enter the DVD market you will be amazed that there are only handful of customers who care about quality (I guess majority of them are seen here at zulm. LOL!). Most customers don't even know which is original and which is pirated. All they care is to see the movie as early as possible.

More than 90% of DVD sales are to Indian stores for rental business who really don't give a damn to quality nor do they want to wait even a day for original if the pirated one is available!

The advantage in sticking to quality is you are aiming for long-term business instead of short-term gains. Companies like Ayangaran (Tamil) are inspiration to companies like iDreamDVD (Telugu).

Well, in the days of VHS that's how VHS releases and pricing used to be:

At the time of film release, VHS cassettes were priced for the Renal market at about $ 30 to $ 50. As time passed by, prices came down. These were usually bad prints too. A year later or so, most of the films (at least good films) had another better quality VHS copy out and selling for around $ 15.

If this was possible for DVDs too, it'll be OK to me. Rightholders can recover their investment from Rental market, from whatever quality they want to release, but later they should release a proper film DVD for the Collectors.

This might work out only for very good Hindi DVDs. In Telugu and Tamil DVD authoring costs, and replications costs add up to be more than the DVD rights in many cases.

A correction to what? But then again when a phrase is taken out of context and isolated it looses it 's intended meaning! :P

Well, look at current Indian DVDs and tell me if Indians as an audience appreciate quality.

BTW, are you Sean Connery Bond, Roger Moore Bond, or dare I ask, Timothy Dalton Bond? :)

Well to answer your first question "Well, look at current Indian DVDs and tell me if Indians as an audience appreciate quality." It's a given fact that they don't and I am not arguing otherwise. I was refering to the minorty who don't appreciate the quality and will stop buying!
Since you dared to ask let me do the honors! The goofy guy from "Her Majesty's Secrete Service" The nondescript Bond "George Lazenby". I can relate to him as a loner! :P

You don't need to sell 007 numbers to have quality, but films like Devdas, K3G, Munnabhai, DCH, KHNH, KNPH, etc. are huge sellers. Ayngaran and Tamilini have produced decent DVDs with a smaller audience base than the Hindi bigwigs.
