[ KHNH: Not progressive, field averaged! DNR issues,
flickering and smearing, aliasing, compression problems
~6/10 (and this is not a pirate, the official DVD!)

Reviews may be following if I find time] :baaa:

Now the FAT LADY SANG!!

Thats what i was trying to tell, visually challenged zulmis, this DVD is indeed really really bad! even from previous YRF standards..KMG was a bit better, imho..this one, is so much artifacts ridden, esp on motion, even people on 14 inch tube can see them..

I would really appreciate if u could include a couple lines comparing to KMG and K3G..

But people r HAPPY spending $22 here for Commentory! and we complain abt $3 KISMAT by BEI!! :nopity: being SOUR GRAPES!

Many thnx again, taking some time.

Looking forward to ur review when feasible!

hate to rub it in arsh bhai...butttttttttttttttttttttttt

Kal Ho Na Ho is the most happening story in the overseas video and theatrical markets among recent releases. Having grossed around $700,000 through DVD sales in the North American and UK markets, the Bollywood blockbuster has clocked $4 million-plus in the theatrical circuit.

While the movie had opened at theatres abroad in step with the domestic release, DVDs of the film have been circulated internationally only from mid-February 2004.

" Kal Ho Na Ho has done around $2 million theatrically in the US and Canada and $1.5 million in the UK . As far as DVDs go, the North American region has hogged close to $500,000, with the UK market turning over about $200,000," Sushil Agrawal, chairman, Video Federation of India, told The Economic Times .

"One was actually expecting Kal Ho Na Ho to ride a bigger launch than the 30,000 DVDs in the US and 10,000 DVDs in UK ."

In tandem, Khakee , he said, has notched nearly $600,000 from DVDs and over $1 million from theatres mainly in the US and UK .

The DVD segment for Bollywood films in the US and UK has also seen LOC picking up $400,000-500,000 in grossings and Ram Gopal Varma-directed Bhoot lapping up about $350,000.

Interestingly, rubbing shoulders with the Hindi mega flicks which have swung a bonanza lately in the global DVD and theatrical markets is the Vidhu Vinod Chopra-produced Munnabhai MBBS . Agrawal said Munnabhai already boasts of nearly $500,000 grossings in the DVD category and above $1 million in collections at theatres.

Figuring in the second rung of success stories overseas are films like Maqbool . The movie, apparently inspired by Macbeth , has seen around 15,000 DVDs arriving at retail shelves in the US and UK .

This should translate in a gross of $200,000-250,000, with theatre earnings adding another $300,000.

"The pricing of DVDs, essentially in the US and UK , fits into two brackets. While the big flicks are priced at $16, the small and medium titles come for $7-12. In the same breath, the launch numbers for blockbusters range between 15,000 and 50,000 DVDs, while slightly lesser titles find 7,000-10,000 pieces being released. In any case, original DVDs generate in the first two weeks or so. After this initial run, counterfeit DVDs, looking exactly like the originals, take over with a price tag of a mere $3," Agrawal said.

Around a dozen new films and 50 oldies are released every month. In fact, piracy is the prime reason for the overseas DVD market Indian films, placed at $18-20 million yearly, "stagnating" somewhat of late.

"Further growth of these brands would probably be fuelled once DVDs enter regions like Far East , South Africa , Middle East and West Indies , for instance, in a big way. This is because producers normally hive off VCD, TV and theatrical rights to the overseas distributor, but exploit the DVD rights themselves," Agrawal said.

My main problem with the DVD is actually not the artifacts, but the colors seem too warm to me; like an orangish/yellowish tint to the picture that wasn't visible at the theater. Setting my TV temperature to cool gives more accurate color (cleaner whites, blues, accurate skin tones, etc.), which is not the case with other movies. Anyone else feel the colors are too warm? Try the movie with the cool setting if you have the capability.

As an aside, for being the first commentary for a Hindi film, it is really good. Gives you some great insights on how the film was made, so a good listen for those interested in filmmaking. Of course it's not up to the level of some great commentaries from Hollywood, but it would still be above average.

watch scenes with lots of movement, and if there is lots of pixellation, you bought the same pirate i bought (in toronto). all the cover art should be the same as the original.

after a bad experience with a pirate, i got the original and it's not much better. this is the worst dvd of a new film from yrf that i have seen. i am sure that kmg and saathiya are better.

yea i think i have pirate version because the swear words are "beeped" over.for example wen the woman throws the builders out the cafe for callign her mommy she calls them "bast*rds" but this is "beeped" over so im pretty sure i have the pirate version even though it is 2 discs.

also there is no age certification logo anywhere on the cover of the dvd.just a small logo on the discs.

watched the dvd in full last night and it was painful at times. if you can find an exact dupe, buy it. not worth $35 CDN, unless you love the movie. the biggest insult was that they put a layer change in the middle of the song "kuch to hua hai". :x

Man!! that film is a rela PAIN to finish!!!

IMHO, it was a CLICHED< OVERTLY LENGTHY CHEESE!
with only one performance, that I loved..JAYA BACHAN!! Saif was ok, as usual, same kinda DCH! etc! he will do, many more roles like this, SRK, was heck of a torture to watch for 3 hrs 45 minutes!!

I was watching Z TV awards where JUHI CHAWLA, rightfully complained to JOHAR the GUY* that it was too long, while as usual he was in DENIAL!

arsh, i was referring to the dvd (picture quality) as being painful to watch, but the movie was, at times, painful also. although preity looked good, she was too loud, and shah rukh was really annoying. i enjoyed it much more at the cinema. the dvd ruins the experience by at least 30%.

Is it just me or does Preity Zinta look like The Wicked Witch Of The West at the bottom of that DVD cover?

Anyways, here are comparison shots between the French 'New-York Masala' DVD (above) and YRF's version (below)...

Comparing it with the YRF DVD, the French transfer isn't as bad as I'd first thought, but it's still problem-laden. Sharpness is superior to YRF as is the framing, but colours are murky/unnatural and the contrast rendition is too high. The video is also not entirely progressive - I spotted quite a few instances of interlaced frames. Sound is below-average too with a fair bit of distortion. Between the two releases, I guess it all comes down to weighing up the pros and cons:

Yash Raj Films
- Interlaced PAL-to-NTSC
- Slightly cropped/Incorrectly framed
- Excellent colour/contrast levels
- Poor sharpness
- Decent sound, but pitch-corrected
- English subtitles

Bodega Films
- Partially progressive PAL
- Full, correctly framed aspect ratio
- Murky colours/poor contrast
- Good sharpness
- Slightly distorted sound
- No English subtitles
