watched this dvd last night and was very disappointed. detail was non-existent and it looks as if they transfered PAL to NTSC. there was lots of shimmering, bringing to mind such DVDs as Asoka R1 and the Canadian version of "The Pianist". watch the song/chapter beginning with a shot of the lead actor on some train tracks to see what i mean.

although my memory of the "alaipayuthe" dvd is fading, i find it hard to believe that this dvd tops it. the colour and sound were excellent however, and i didn't notice much graininess.

the subtitles were terrible. i remember one scene going about 75% unsubtitled.

theon if u look at the video stills above, that is almost exactly like how the video looks on my TVs. The colour is nice, but there is alot of blocks/compression artifacts - althought not nearly as some of the Eros releases. The detail is *somewhat* ok, but nearly not good enough. In comparison to Ayngaran's recent release JAY JAY, this video is utterly crap!!


Alaipayuthe's video was good but it was excessively grainy and had really washed out colours. I mean if you look the "Pancham Nigame" song and then compare it to the same song "Saathiya" from the YRF Saathiya dvd - the colours will really pop out on the Hindi version. Sad to say when a YRF dvd looks better than an Ayngaran one, but in this case it does. Keep in mind that both songs were shot in the same manner with similar colours and stuff... so a comparison is justifiable.

However Theon, what did u think of the movie Thithikkuthe itself?

Saathiya and Alai Payuthey had two different cinematographers. P C sriram used a lot of filters to match the wardrobes in AlaiPayuthey. While in the Hindi version, the cinematographer rarely used any filters at all. I agree Saathiya dvd had much more vibrant colors than Alai Payuthey dvd. Ayngaran transfers goes for everything bright and clean look, sacrificing the color vibrancy. The new dvds like Pithamagan and Jay Jay have good color saturation.

darius, the stills themselves lack much detail, and you can't tell how movement looks from stills. my main beef with the dvd was the distracting shimmering (do you know what i mean? wish i could be more technical...) that occured with movement. i'm pretty sure this was converted from a PAL source since i haven't seen such poor PQ from ayngaran.

as for the saathiya DVD, it was oversaturated IMO. the beginning of the title song has vivek with a glowing red shirt. i'm not a fan of colours that "pop out"; i'd rather have them look natural and there is nothing as red as vivek's shirt in real life.

as for the movie, i didn't think it was anything special. i think the "comedy" detracted from the film, and the action was worse than that of DDLJ. i have a thing against corny song lyrics and the comparisons between iraq and a woman's heart are in my hall of fame. the dubbing was also poorly done. and what was with the special handshake?

aside from those criticisms, i did enjoy the movie overall. perhaps because the lead male rekindled my dream of becoming a star (if HE can make it...) and the plot solidified my aspirations of becoming a screenplay writer (i'm joking...well, at least half-joking).

i'm sure there were positive points that i can't remember right now. darius, what were the aspects of the movie that made this film stand out (aside from your infatuation with the actress )
