I just found out...started screaming madly, alarmed the entire household, which now thinks me insane (I don't watch/care about the Oscars usually)...

Re: Amelie -- yes, right now Lagaan is the underdog to this film, b/c Amelie, being oh-so-sophisticated by virtue of its FRENCH origin (blech!), received a lot of media build up. However, here's the route by which Lagaan could take the award: if this Moulin Rouge craze is pointed back to the source of its inspiration -- BOLLYWOOD -- which Baz Luhrmann (dir.) always acknowledged in all his interviews. If the American media does this -- and they may, since all us Americans in the forum know how they love good film value (songs and dances, what better?!), quirky "multi-ethnic" interest stories, etc. -- then there is a real possibility LAGAAN's increased visibility could garner more votes from Academy members (some of whom must, by now, be sick of the obligatory European nod in the best foreign film category).

God, I'm ecstatic. Really.

Ways Lagaan WON'T win:

1) http://www.oscar.com/nominees/foreign_lagaan.html

Look at this crap. On the pages for the other nominated foreign films are clips you can watch of the movie (particularly AMELIE...grr...), but LAGAAN has nothing, just a meaningless .jpg filler of the Academy logo. GAH!

Actually, only the Amelie page has special stuff. None of the rest do - they are all the same as Lagaan. I think it'll take a while cos Amelie was obviously getting in and they would've been ready for it. The Lagaan page would probably get updated in a few days.

Guys

Lets stop being so pessimistic. After all, honestly all of us wanted LAGAAN to be nominated even when we all knew, chances were slim and glim. It got nominated. THAT in itself is a BIG WIN!!

Now least we fans can do is stand behind it, promote it in our own ways and keep fingers crossed and hope that it WINS!!

Ironically, this is exactly what the film is all about.

WINNING AGAINST ALL ODDS.

Let's just rally, for once stand behind our OWN dear country.

Yesterday I heard on NPR some dude talk about the foreign film nominations at the Oscars.

As I held my breath to hear what he had to say about Lagaan, I was disappointed the way he described it. From what I recollect he called it a film about a village in India in the late 19th century during the British Raj, that is impoverished and its fight against the oppression by a captain of the British Army (or some such).

I get a feeling that these firang dudes have not gotten the spirit of Lagaan at all. it is really about beating the oppressor at his own game without shedding a drop of blood. Truly it is a landmark film in that sense and especially since it comes from the land of Gandhi and ahimsa. The Mahatma would have been proud !

I hope Aamir concentrates not only on as many academy members seeing it, but also the inherent message. This alone I believe will get it the award !!!

Pity Pakistan did not sent it, it would have been tough competition for Lagaan. Even Amelie looks amateurish in front of Maula Jatt. It has Oscar written all over it. I recommend a Criterion dvd to be made and a worldwide release thru SPC. Man, the Pakistanis really know how to make films.

Hi! lets not muddy the issue by jumping in bolly/lolly things..guys grow up! we have a BIG FISH to fry at OSCARS!!

One draw back for LAGAAN that i could think for in its way for competiton of best foreign film!! IMO is lack of mainstream release by CT before oscar nominations arrived!! Crouching tiger had that advantage last year along with other foreign film nominee like Amelie etc!! Viewers and CRITICS are well awre of them and have been noticed well upstream with a lot of reviews!! So HYPE is GENERATED!! Last YEAR there was a lot of HYPE generated for CTHD same way with mainstream release!!
What are ur 2 cents on this point pls.?

I agree with you Arsh.

Mainstream US release will help create the hype, a lot of people will see it, review it etc.

The trick really is to get LAGAAN right there in front with other nominees. Let the non-Desi audience see it, like it, spread the word-of-mouth etc.

Also, according to me a better, top-notch, hollywood quality DVD should be released NOW!!

Aamir should go all-out on publicity, distribution and making sure it reaches maximum people. It's really NOW or NEVER!!

BTW, is there a site that has any reviews of nominations, I really wanna know what non-desi's are thinking of this movie.

And how does the winner get selected out of the nominees.

Thanks.

you know so far they are not touching..lagaan's category they are busy with main 4 categories debate..i.e best fim, best actor actresses and ? director etc and on the top, black vs non black nomination, but i have previously heard very good critic reviews on Amelie and other nominees in that category!! but Alas! Lagaan did not make to mainstream! by now!! will it happen before oscars are finilized!! it think that will help out a lot!! try cnn theu have a oscar gallery discussion, i still have to see, if they are even touching it!! last year i knew CDHD was in every one's mouth as it became contender for some other oscar nominations besides best film and best foreign fim!! i am sure if lagaan would have been released mainstream , it might get possibly a few other nominations too!! wishfully? best background music, song or choreography! etc? what do u think? :baaa: WORD OF MOUTH IS IMPT!! HERE AS U SUGGESTED! way to go lagaan!! :) :p ;)
