ok well i don't know how many of u went... but i somehow managed to worm my way into the 7 pm screening (which was really empty btw). The movie was just too tempting for me to miss it!!
OK, this is not a well thought review, but here's a good summation: its quite possible the best Bollywood action movie ever made!!!
Now as soon as I left the theatre, I felt kind of disappointed - not in the way how the whole movie played out, but just that I felt that something was missing. But now that i've had some time to think about it and found that nothing more could be really added. There were lots of action scenes, which were incredible. However some of the more dramatic scenes were also there. Now nothing as hard hitting as Ardh Satya, but enough for it to be hard hitting but not to distract from the excellent action scenes. This is an ACTION/ADVENTURE film first and foremost BUT IT COMES AS A SURPRISE that the movie just doesn't end when our heroes come home. See the movie has a 45 minutes after our heroes manage to survive their hellish nightmare to see the effect of that trip, and the consequences of all the betrayals. Now I commend Rajkumar Santoshi for doing this. He tried the same method in Pukar, but he placed the dramatic elements in the middle, separating the main espionage story into 3 parts. Here everything is merged throughout the story so it moves along at a rapid and consistent pace (but always keeps u guessing).
Now I don't want to give away any plot elements - too much has given away before. Lets just say that the main story has to deal with our team of cops (AB, Akshay, Tusshar) who have to go to this small town and escort a prisoner (Atul Kulkarni) back to Mumbai. Ajay Devgan is the bad ass villain who shows up at every 10 minutes to launch various attacks on our heroes. Somehow our heroes do make it to Mumbai, but not intact. About 45 minutes later, justice is served, but not in a necessarily good way.
Ok, now what I found disturbing (or lacking) with the film is that everyone of these characters deserve their own films. However in the scope of this film, not much could have been added for it to be feasible. Amitabh Bachchan has clearly the biggest role, and he is given full justice - however at the end, the very end, it would have been nice to see his reaction to the climax. Without that scene, I felt as if i never really knew what happened to his character (even though i did), but until the final scene, his character was given full scope. AB himself said that this is his best role to date, and I don't think i can disagree. This is a very different cop from his other characters and I applaud AB for taking such a daring role. Of course it goes to say that he did an incredible job in the film, and this is one of his best performances to date.
The rest of the characters are where the disappointments come in. Ajay Devgan has a very bad ass role, but in a way his role is not unlike which gulshan grover has played in many movies before. Not much characterization was given to his role, and as it appears he's just a hired goon. Just a leader of the main bad guys who comes in when an action scene is required. However I understand that his character needed to be mysterious, and he keeps this sense around him till the final scene of the movie. Of course he does incredibly well in his job and was excellent as the bad guy. He looked convincing, looked unbeatable, and was very very very evil. He had no sense of good in him at all, and for an actor like Devgan to have a menacing presence (even though he's played very good guys almost all the time) is very impressive. I wished he had a bigger role, but there was no way he could be given more time.
Akshay Kumar is the likeable corrupt cop in the film. However from the very beginning we tend to side him, so we know he could never be THAT evil. He is mainly the comic relief, but does have some ok action scenes, and is probably one of the more favourite of the audiences. The one major gripe I have is the fate of his character. I won't reveal much, but it was rather pathetic. It gives him alot of sympathy, yes, but won't go too well with the audiences like me.
Tusshar does surprisingly ok in the movie, almost because he's non-existent in the movie. He represents the innocence of the youth, and how all cops should be. His transformation at the end is expected, and he handles his last scene moderately well. It isn't very hard hitting, but considering its Tusshar, it wasn't that bad. I think this guy was made for this role - he looks young, innocent, and very very scared. I'm glad Akshaye Khanna left the project because there was no way he would be convincing at all.
Aishwarya Rai was in the movie for 3 reasons. The first is to look hot and she succeeds. The second is for the 2 songs and to provide a romantic interest for a character. She succeeds at this part too, but it wasn't really needed. The third reason is the most important plot element in the movie. I won't reveal it here, but some have already revealed it in another thread. This is where she kinda fails, because this is where I wished her actions were explained more clearly. I understand why things happened the way it happens, but I wish her character was written just a little bit more in depth.
Atul Kulkarni had a decent role, but wasn't used as well as he's capable of being. He did ok in a role that was severely underwritten but atleast he's given a little flashback inwhich he can demonstrate his acting abilities. Tanuja and Jaya Prada are pretty standard in their roles, but it was a nice touch to see Jaya use her native South Indian language (it was telugu, right?). Lara Dutta looked hot in an unnecessary number.
Now here's my one gripe with the film. The songs were totally and absolutely unnecessary which only take away from the suspenseful events of the movie. If only Rajkumar Santoshi had the guts to completely remove them altogether then it would have been a more effective movie. As it is, Santoshi left only 1 minute of each song in the movie, so we just get snippets of each song (even the Lara Dutta number), but he must remember to go all the way next time!
So basically in the end, Khakee tends to be hard hitting, effective, and entertaining. Now I believe that since Satta was absolutely amazing, Madhur Bhandarkar's AAN and Shyam Benegal's DEV have the potential to be more controversial, hard hitting and effective. But as it is, this film is a very good blend of brain and brawn. A thinking man's action movie with an incredible cast and some very awesome action sequences. This is probably in league with Ghayal, and is clearly Santoshi's best film since Ghatak. I applaud him for not forgetting his story before the action sequences and wish him all the luck for his next film - which promises to be even better.
So All in all, DEFINATELY DO NOT MISS THIS MOVIE!! SEE IT AT ALL COSTS!!
