Khakee

By Taran Adarsh

Cop films offer a glimpse into one of the most dangerous and unpredictable jobs in the world. Also, cop films seem to bring out the best in most directors, who try to make the film more realistic and gritty.

If there is one thing that you must do when you watch KHAKEE, it is this: You must focus complete attention to the goings-on. A momentary lapse in your focus or a brief hiatus to buy Popcorn at an inopportune moment may deprive you of exciting moments of this densely-packed and intricately-laid out film.

Rajkumar Santoshi's latest offering KHAKEE is tough, electrifying and explosive. It is one of the most exhilarating thrillers to reach the screen in recent memory.

KHAKEE scores points at almost all levels, except… More about that later!

From the acidic comments on corruption in the system, to the tense and fast-paced action sequences, to the twists and turns in the story [the pre-climax will catch you unaware], it delivers what it promises.

What started as a routine mission of shifting an ISI terrorist Iqbal Ansari [Atul Kulkarni] from Chandangadh to Mumbai ended as a nightmare. The first escort team of police officers was ambushed midway, blown to bits. But a brave officer managed to ensure that Ansari did not escape.

Now another team was being sent to do this job from Mumbai.

This crucial assignment was given to DCP Anant [Amitabh Bachchan]. The officer was a failure in the eyes of the establishment and more importantly, in his own. This was his only chance to prove himself.

Street-smart, brave but rotten to the core, Sr. Inspector Shekhar [Akshay Kumar], for whom the lines between good and bad, right and wrong had blurred a long time ago, was also forced on this mission. He didn't want to be a part of this mission, but had no choice.

The third on the list was Sub-Inspector Ashwin [Tusshar Kapoor], a young officer on his first serious assignment. He was going to find out the hard way that there was a massive difference between training school and the ground reality of the harsh, corrupt and a violent world out there.

These three officers accompanied by two constables were now given the charge of escorting the dreaded terrorist from Chandangadh to Mumbai. But someone out there didn't want them to get to Mumbai.

A nameless, faceless enemy, who was always one step ahead of them and would do all he could to stop them, was proving a stumbling block.

The difference between KHAKEE and numerous other, more routine films of the genre begins with the script. Smart, insightful and consistently engaging, Rajkumar Santoshi and Sridhar Raghavan's screenplay is a treat for anyone who views films as a medium for both art and entertainment.

The film is filled with several twists and turns, but not so many that the plot becomes difficult to swallow or to follow. The subplots – and there are several – are as well-developed as the main story, and the supporting characters are presented as more than mere colorful misfits decorating the background.

It takes KHAKEE nearly three hours to spin its tale, but how quickly these three hours fly past one just does not realise. Santoshi maintains tight control of every scene. The pace of the film is just right; it has moments of drama, of tension and great action.

One wouldn't call KHAKEE the best script Santoshi has tackled, but it certainly would rank amongst the best.

From the execution point of view, Santoshi is in form yet again. A number of sequences linger in your memory even after the show has concluded. Instances:

The clash between the cops and the masked men at the very beginning of the film.
The journey from Chandangadh to Mumbai, which has several thrilling moments. One of them being the action sequence in a village fair, amidst hundreds of cattle.
The pre-interval argument between Amitabh and Akshay.
The interval point when the villain reaches the mansion where the team [Amitabh, Akshay, Tusshar] has taken shelter.

Post-interval too, the film has its share of brilliantly executed sequences. Sample these:

The argument between Amitabh and the villain, which actually starts at the interval point.
Akshay's change of heart, when he decides to support Amitabh in the mission.
Amitabh's outburst at the police station, when he reminds the Officer Incharge of the duties of men in uniform.
The train chase and the scene that follows, between Tusshar and the constable's wife.
The pre-climax, when the true identity of the villain's accomplice stands exposed.
The finale – when Amitabh and the villain come to blows. Also, the last sequence of the film [between Tusshar and the villain] is noteworthy.

Another aspect that enhances the film is the dialogues [Rajkumar Santoshi], which will be met with a thunderous applause at various junctures of the film. Cinematography [K.V. Anand] is brilliant. Action sequences [Tinu Verma] are outstanding and one of the major assets of the enterprise.

Music [Ram Sampath] belongs to the popular genre, but all three songs of the film – 'Wada Raha', 'Dil Dooba' and 'Aisa Jadoo' [Lara Dutta] – seemed forced in the screenplay. Had KHAKEE been a songless film, the script would've been even more tighter.

Santoshi has a knack for extracting wonderful performances from the cast. In fact, the protagonists in his films have delivered matchless performances, besides being rewarded with the National Award [Sunny won the coveted award twice, for GHAYAL and DAMINI, Anil Kapoor for PUKAR and Ajay Devgan for THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH]. In KHAKEE, Amitabh Bachchan delivers one of the best performances of his career. He has some of the toughest scenes in the film. In fact, a lesser actor would've failed to do justice to the role. But Bachchan's expressions, voice and movement bring the character to life. This performance should serve as a textbook for everyone facing the camera in Bollywood.

Akshay Kumar is fantastic. The actor leaves a strong impression despite pitted against powerful performers. He is incredible in light sequences. Undoubtedly, this is his career-best performance.

Ajay Devgan adds yet another feather in his cap with a performance that could've been essayed only by a master performer. His confrontations with Amitabh Bachchan are exemplary.

Aishwarya Rai gets a role to prove her talent and she more than lives up to the expectations. Tusshar may not have many lines to deliver, but his presence and expressions register a strong impact. Tanuja is tremendous in a small, but significant role. Jaya Pradha is adequate. Atul Kulkarni is a complete natural. Lara Dutta is fantastic in the 'Aisa Jadoo' number.

On the whole, KHAKEE has wonderful performances, intriguing web-like storyline, outstanding action and expert direction as its trump cards. All these factors put together should prove a rewarding experience for its investors.

Rating:- * * * *.

BTW!! then it must be THE BEST RKS film????? :baaa: ???

Another Super duper REVIEW:

MoviemagiK

KHAKEE
action adventure/ thriller/ cop drama

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumaar, Ajay Devgan, Ashwariya Rai, Atul Kulkarni, Jaya Pradha, Tanuja, D.Santosh,Prakash Raj and Lara Dutta.

Director: Raj Kumar Santoshi Producer: Keshu

Music: Ram Sampat

ReViewed by Akshay Shah

Raj Kumar Santoshi has always been a director who is regarded as one of Bollywoods best! His sense of a brilliant script....his taut and thoughtful direction...his ability to extract the BEST performances and above all to keep the viewer completely engaged for the duration of its entire length are some of the factors that lead to the judgement that he is one of Bollywoods best!

KHAKEE is a film that was huge on expectations.....a cast to die for....a story that sounded exciting and thrilling...and above all a budget of mammoth proportions....Does Raj Kumar Santoshi manage to live upto expectations? Putting it lightly-YES!

The film revolves around a team of cops who are assigned a mission to complete. What started out as a regular mission to transport ISI agent Iqbal Ansari(Atul Kulkarni) from Chandangadh to Mumbai ends up as a absolute disaster. The first team of offciers are ambushed midway and blown to smithereens. A brave officer made sure that Ansari did not escape..

After the nightmare of the first mission...another team is sent to do the job!

meless enemy?

How Anant Srivastav and his team of brave officers unravel the conspiracy behind Iqbal Ansaris case.....discover the true hidden villans....and serve justice according to the text book is what forms the crux of KHAKEE!

Santoshi has alway shad a knack for writing making the most normal scripts into something astounding, engaging and a cut-above the rest! Be it a action film like GHAYAL, a social drama like LAJJA or a historical film like THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH. KHAKEE is no different as he tackles the theme of corruption, crooked cops and a dying system-a scenario that is presented in Hindi cinema time and time again..but its the manner in which he tells his tale that makes the story engaging.

Right from the first frame he manages to capture the audiences attention never letting up the pace. The characters are all multi dimensional and Santoshi adds depth to each character.

The main highlight of the story and screenplay would have to be the numerous twists and turns which happen throughout the movie. Santoshi takes the viewer on a wild ride and leaves them completely breathless, the film has a lot of twists and turns which prove to be tremendously exciting...but they never feel like are a gimmick or like they are going overboard!

As a director this has to rank as one of Raj Kumar Santoshis best films to date. With a solid script, a cast to die for and a flawless technical team Santoshi delivers the goods and exceeds the expectations that i had from the movie. No doubt this is Santoshis best piece of work since GHATAK and is better than PUKAAR, LAJJA and THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH imo-all of which were brilliant films in their own right.

There are certain scenes that will be etched in the viewers mind after the movie is finished....these include

* The action sequence in the village fair with Amitabh chasing Ajay Devgan till hes out of breath

* The pre interval argument between Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumaar which is just brilliant in all aspects of film making

* The scenes right after Interval Point with the confrontation between Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgan

* Akshay Kumaars change of heart

* The scene between Tusshar and the constables wife..

* The pre climax when Ajay Devgans accomplice is revealed.

* The finale fight sequence between Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgan which is SIMPLY STUNNING!!

Performances in the movie are of a extremely high order and as always Santoshi extracts some of the most EXTRAORDINARY performances from his cast. For those who aren't aware Santoshi has the ability to extract the best from his entire cast-right from GHAYAL(Sunny Deol bagged a National Award), DAMINI(Sunny Deol bagged another National Award), Ghatak(Sunny Deol and Amrish Puri were amazing), PUKAAR(Anil Kapoor bagged a National Award) THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH(Ajay Devgan bagged a National Award) and with KHAKEE hopefully Mr Amitabh Bachchan will bag a well deserved National Award!

As Anant Srivastav, Amitabh Bachchan delivers a performance that could rank as his BEST since his comeback. The angry young man of yesteryear is back and angrier than ever! Amitabh Bachchan still possess those fiery red eyes.....the deep bartitone voice full of anger and the right amount of energy that is needed to play the role of a daredevil cop. Bachchans expressions, his voice modulation, and body language bring the character of Anant Srivastav to life.Bachchan is there in nearly each and every frame and the movie CLEARLY belongs to Mr Bachchan and no one else. A performance that shoud play as a workshop to anyone taking up acting. Definetly ranks in Amitabh Bachchans TOP TEN PERFORMANCES to date!

Akshay Kumaar is FANTASTIC and gives a astounding account of himself. As a corrupt and slimy cop Kumaar is at ease and delivers a performance that is natural to the core. His light scenes are just superb and even in the latter half when his character takes a turn for the serious Kumaar is brilliant. No doubt a performance that is one of his best(IF NOT BEST) to date...and also one that is bound to get him sympathy.

Ajay Devgan delivers yet another top notch performance. Only a master performer could have performed the part of Angre with the right amount of flair and style and Devgan does that just fine. Although he had played a villan in the past with DEEWANGEE-his performance here is of a higher league. The scenes where Devgan is on screen he demands screen presence and is miraculous how Devgan so easily slips between playing a hero and villan. The same actor portrayed a honest up right cop early last year in Prakash Jhas GANGAJAAL with utmost conviction-and here as a hardcore hardened criminal Devgan is yet again flawless! Versatile he is no doubt about that.

Tusshar Kapoor leaves a great account of himself in a small but significant role. As the young rookie cop Tusshar lets his eyes do the talking and despite such a huge cast Tusshar is never overshadowed and manages to leave a impression. Although the role was originally meant to be played by Akshaye Khanna...i feel Tusshar Kapoor has done complete justice to the role which is a HUGE compliment for the actor...

Ashwariya Rai springs a surprise with a wicked performance. She isn't there just to provide glamour and despite a male oriented flick-Rai gets her fair share in terms of scope to exude her talent and she makes the most of it.

Atul Kulkarni as Iqbal Ansari is a complete natural. He makes the most of his meaty role and doesn't leave any room for complaints.

From the supporting cast D.Santosh is great in a small role. Tanuja and Jaya Pradha both play their small parts well and Prakash Raj leaves a impression in his role.

Dialogues in Santoshi films always prove to be a HUGE plus factor and at times also being the mainstay of the movie....KHAKEE is no different. Raj Kumar Santoshis dialogues in KHAKEE are just brilliant and elevates the film a few notches higher. Those delivered by Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumaar and Ajay Devgan meet with a thunderous applause and no doubt this BEST DIALOGUES is one trophy Santoshi may bag yet again after GHAYAL, GHATAK, DAMINI, CHINAGATE and PUKAAR!

Technically producer Keshu leaves no stone unturned and the lavish budget of the film translates well onscreen. The film has the feel of a epic adventure/action film and is shot in a slick and fast manner. K.V Anands camerawork is of International standards and the colouring of the movie works in the films favour. Tinu Vermas action is another aspect of the movie which is a standout. The film has numerous action sequences throughout and they enthrall the viewer to no end keeping them hooked onto their seats.

The only gripe i had with KHAKEE was that Ram Sampaths music was not needed at all. DIL DOOBA and VAADA RAHA hinder the films pace and don't gel at all with the film proceedings. He should have just left AISA JAADO and thats about it. The songs seem like mere gimmicks at times and KHAKEE is a film that didn't need a romantic track AT ALL!

The picturisations of all songs are great and Lara Dutta is STUNNINGLY HOT in AISA JAADO. MERE MAULA and OOPARWALE are good as the background & situational numbers.

All up where does that leave KHAKEE? a BRILLIANT film that will be remembered years down the track as a exhilirating and heard pounding cop movie! The stage is (hopefully) set for the year 2004 and mark my words KHAKEE will feature in the years top 5 even at the end of 2004!

9 outta 10

Khakee is money's worth. What more do you want?

Sukanya Verma | January 23, 2004 17:58 IST

Whoa! That was my first reaction after I saw Khakee, first day first show. It wasn't the first time, though. Throughout the film, there are many surprises to make you jump from your seat.

Unless you happen to be the writers (Rajkumar Santoshi and Shridhar Raghavan) of Khakee, it is hard to guess what happens next. And if I had any preconceived notions about Khakee being a desi Internal Affairs, I could not have been more wrong. It does feel good to be wrong.

Khakee is a three-hour, heavy-duty film about cops that keeps you engaged through its 18 reels.

When a convoy of police officers fail to transfer alleged ISI agent Iqbal Ansari (Atul Kulkarni) from Chandangadh to Mumbai, a new team is assigned to complete the task.

At the fag end of his career, DCP Anant Shrivastava (Amitabh Bachchan) is finally asked to go on a life-threatening mission. Finally, because the man has been waiting for an opportunity to prove his guts through his career. Only, it comes at a time when he and his wife (Jaya Pradha) preparing for their daughter's wedding.

This is it. No more storytelling. What I just gave away is one-fourth of Khakee's plot. That is the best part. You think you know but you actually don't. Interesting enough? Watch the movie.

What I would like to talk about is the effect of Khakee.

Rage, in its most explicit form, that director Rajkumar Santoshi conveyed in his past films like Ghayal, Ghatak and Pukar is in full swing here as well. Through Amitabh Bachchan's character, he expresses his anger at corruption at every level, scolds the media and the easily influenced masses. There are not-so-subtle references to POTA and the policy of blaming our neighbouring country for every blunder.

There are clichés as well. Case in point: Tum jaise kuch khudgarz log apni poori kaum ko badnaam karte hain [A handful of selfish people like you give a bad name to your entire community].

What I also liked about Khakee is that every actor, big or small (in terms of footage), good or bad (in terms of character) had that one defining moment on screen.

Amitabh Bachchan is essential to Khakee. Only an actor of his calibre could carry off this role which requires him to single-handedly take on the government and police administration.

The angry young man in him lives on in those moments when he unleashes his raw fury. At the same time, the redness and exhaustion in his helpless eyes speak of the burning frustration and hidden sense of failure in them.

After Hera Pheri, Akshay Kumar is at it again. He plays the comic bad boy to good effect in Khakee. Note the scene where he is shown flirting with Aishwarya. A coughing constable constantly interrupts him. An irritated Kumar in his trademark kya-bache-ki-jaan-lega-tone (a la Mr & Mrs Khiladi), scoffs, 'Beta, kuch leta hai ki main doon [Buzz off, kiddo].'

Even when his character transforms into a responsible police officer, he convincingly maintains his cheeky sense of humour.

Then there is Ajay Devgan. Is he droopy-eyed, self-styled and smug in Khakee too? Somewhat, yes. To give Devgan his due, he lends a lot of little quirks to his Angere. Angere is a chain-smoker. He wears dark black sunglasses, a dusty blazer, olive green tee and light blue faded jeans throughout. And he speaks in singsong manner, which has subtle hints of Rajesh Khanna's Anand Babu in Amar Prem.

I liked the part where he casually remarks, "Maar to isse kehte hain, jisse maar khane wala aur maarne wala dono roye.' Though that particular 'getting X to hit Y' scene is clearly reminscent of Dilwale and Mohra.

Aishwarya Rai uses her blue green eyes appropriately. Truth be told, that is all she is expected to do in Khakee.

There is a certain earnestness in Tusshar Kapoor's personality. And Santoshi uses it to Khakee's advantage.

Technically too, Khakee is tops. Nitin Chandrakant Desai's imaginative sets, K V Anand's adventurous camerawork and Tinu Verma's thrilling action do not go unnoticed.

The background score brings back the memory of Spy Game and Aks.

What I didn't like about Khakee is the songs. Believe me, they are so UNWANTED. The music on its own is fun. But in the film, it just doesn't work. They come at the most inopportune moment and shatter the tension and pace of the screenplay.

Khakee is a smart film. It makes you think. It gives you your money's worth. What more do you want?

Khakee definitely a Super Hit film, but it's not showing in Toronto I-max or in Square One type decent theatres where many crap Hindi films have recently been screened.

Either they can't predict which film is worth screening in good venues or may be there isn't enough clientale??

Rana

P.S.
Lucky for me, I'm in Atlanta and may be able to catch Khakee this evening. Atlnta's Galaxy cinema, definitely has good DD sound.

I meant in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St.Paul. Look up India-Town(Yahoo Groups) posting of the last couple of days and you should find a posting with details.....

On an aside, an interview with the writer of KHAKEE.....did not know he was the script writer of AAHAT (pretty dismal horror show that used to air on Sony, and oscillated between the rubbish and pedestrian) and CID (which airs even now, )....but the attempts were alright....

Another SUPER DUPER review:

'KHAKEE' LEADS HITS OF THE YEAR

By S Pankaj

Critic's I-view

click for larger view

Raj Kumar Santoshi is one helluva director in Hindi films who keeps on giving surprises one after another. He makes films on so varied subjects that one film is just different from the other. However, he didn't do it from the beginning though. He made films with Sunny Deol like 'Ghayal', 'Damini' and 'Ghatak', but films like 'Andaz Apna Apna', 'Barsaat', 'The Legend Of Bhagat Singh' and 'Lajja' made him a director with a difference. His latest offering 'Khakee' deals with corruption in the system and the problems those uniformed men face within the system. 'Khakee' speaks for the masses and it has all the ingredients for them.

Still it will be equally liked by the classes. To summarize the film's fate, it can be said that if Prakash Mehra gave The Angry Young Man to Bollywood in 'Zanjeer' as Inspector Vijay Shrivastav, then the inspector gets promoted here to the rank of DCP and has now become the Volatile Old Man of Bollywood in 'Khakee'. The film is one has one of the best performances of Amitabh Bachchan till date. And every other thing is a sort of bonus on your ticket. The film is going to create waves among audiences and will be the most talked about film of coming days. Raj Kumar Santoshi made Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgan win National Awards in his films in the past. Now the competition begins from the day one as to who will dare beat Big B in the chase this year.

click for larger view

When Amitabh made his comeback about a decade ago, he was failing miserably. That time it was mentioned that there should be roles on the lines of Sean Conery's 'Rock' for Amitabh Bachchan where he becomes the crux of the happenings and the younger lot surrounds him as the icing on the cake. Writer Sridhar Raghvan (brother of Sriram Raghavan, director of 'Ek Hasina Thi') and Santoshi have done the same in 'Khakee'. Akshay Kumar, Tusshar and Ajay Devgan are there and Aishwarya too, but 'Khakee' gets color only because of Amitabh. He is just the reverse of Sean Conery's role in 'Rock here though.

click for larger view

To bring back a dreaded terrorist from Chandangarh to Mumbai, DCP Anant (Amitabh) is assigned the task of leading the escort team. He has senior Inspector Shekhar (Akshay Kumar) and sub-Inspector Ashwin (Tusshar) as his aides. What looked to be a routine task for the three turns into a gruesome journey. Every one of them has an altogether different approach to his job. If Anant has to prove that his ideas are still worth for the department, Shekhar takes it as just another thankless job. Ashwin finds for the first time that the realities are different from the classroom training. They have a common goal and for that they will have to work like a team, but there is some one who does not want them to succeed and this enemy is from within.

click for larger view

'Khakee' is a complete entertainer and fulfils all the expectations that one has from a good film. This moves very fast and it will be a loss for those who miss even a single scene in the theatre. Like his other films, Santoshi has developed various sub plots in 'Khakee' too. And these sidetracks don't dither the narration of the original story; rather they add to the momentum. The script is very tight and it does not give any time to the viewer to relax. The events come as flashes and remain there with all their impact. One can hardly imagine as to what is going to happen next as there is no loose shot to give that space to the viewer.

click for larger view

As a technician, Santoshi wins 100 per cent points in 'Khakee'. He has built an impressive film on a slick screenplay. His imagination is praiseworthy and he uses his team to its fullest. The dialogues written by Santoshi himself are masterwork and even after the film is over, viewers remember them. Cinematography by K. V. Anand is A grade and the music by Ram Sampath is good too. The best part of the film is action by Tinu Verma, who after a long time has come out with some edge of the seat sequences in 'Khakee'. The train scene will be remembered for a long and will always be counted as one of the best action scenes in the history of Hindi Cinema.

click for larger view

Among actors the film belongs to Amitabh Bachchan. The film becomes synonym with his character DCP Anant and the whole film progresses from his point of view. At the age of 61, it is only Amitabh who can give such a volatile performance; no other actor can do this. Akshay Kumar is fantastic in his role and he too gets some good lines to deliver on screen. Tusshar doesn't have many dialogues to deliver but he succeeds with his facial expressions. Aishwarya Rai looks pretty and works better (it is the same film where she had broken her leg while shooting) this time around. Jaya Prada, Tanuja and Atul Kulkarni support the film well. Ajay Devgan is a surprise item as is Lara Dutta's item number in Santoshi's yet another good film. On the whole, 'Khakee' will stay in theaters for many weeks to come and will do much better business in comparison to the other Amitabh starrer 'Aetbaar' released simultaneously this Friday. This is for the first time in Amitabh's career that his two films have been released on the same day.

Saw it last evening.

Over 4000 meter film. Every Inch A Film.

Three hour long with plenty of DD blasts and gun shots. Just shy of saying "Every Second A Blast".

No fear of film to be cut. Nothing is cut-able.

Test yourself if you are a genious. You are a genious if you can predict what's going to happen next, anywhere in the film (except songs).
