SONY MUSIC PRESENTS: MEENAXI - A TALE OF THREE CITIES!!!! M F Hussain made it which makes you know that its going to be an oddball movie, but THE MUSIC!! ahh! its amazing just in that 30 second trailor he proves he's the best!

I hope meenaxi is good, if rehman, actually did himself, and not by assistant, and computers, recycling..

imho, i am disappointed by lakeer, i thought his tezeeb was strictly average, but lakeer is below average imho..5-6/10

Lakeer was a re-harsh of his 1999 soundtrack Rhythm, which was a shame as Rhythm was a top soundtrack but with the new "Hindi" beats that Rahman place in Lakeer (particularly on the Dalar Mendi song) the whole piece doesn't gel as well, also the lyrics was too soppy!!

Also I saw the trailer and their picturisation wasn't that great...Sunny Deol dancing was disturbing to the eyes!!!

Tehzeeb was a better soundtrack then Lakeer, but not a touch on his new score for the Bharthiraja film which I loved on first hearing.

I agree, Audit, LAKEER is best of MISH MASH, Hotch Poch..album, does not have any character..u cant tell, whether it is for action, action thriller, musical, drama, historical, period film, or film, like boys, Hinglish, fusion..classic

It tries to be like every thing at places, with my humble apologies, failing miserably.

I was not very happy the way TEHZEEB turned out to be..but in retrospect it was much better than Lakeer..How many times u have listened to those 3 tunes from rhythum? Paigham etc..Zillion times from Rehman and his protegees.

Rehman is OVER WORKED with International Projects, He is doing CUT and PASTE job these days with HINDI music..his computer and assistants r at work, he is occupied some where else..

I am extremely DISAPPOINTED! :baaa: :nopity: :keh:

Rhythm is really good. I don't know how well it did, but the movie flopped, so it probably didn't get the recognition it deserved.

This isn't the first time Rahman has reused Tamil songs in a Hindi soundtrack. Vishwavidhata used a few songs from Puthiya Mugam. He's done the reverse as well, with Tamil versions of Osaka Muraya from One Two Ka Four, Jumbalikka from Thakshak, and Yaaron Sun Lo Zara from Rangeela.

Using songs both ways, NP for me man!! But not to JUST FILL IN THE BLANKS. NAYAK, SAATHIYA,even I liked LOVE U hamesha too, and not to forget, immensably lovable music of FLOP ONE TWO KA FOUR..Just listen to TAKSHAK..LAKEER is not even 10% o9f that :nopity:

i dont think its arr's fault for using rhythm tunes in here...i remember reading an article during the lauching of lakeer that the producer loved the rhythm tunes and wanted them for his next movie...and i think the lyrics make a big difference...we need more people like javed and gulzar out there. Mehboob is on the better side, but still pretty mediocre. I think Saathiya was one of the best adaptations of his tamil score (even though i think devdas deserved the best music awards)... But let me tell you meenaxi is going to be BRILLIANT. i havent seen a trailor so beautifully done in a LOOOONNNG time...probobly since devdas or even lagaan...and it's sony music so hopefully it will have some quality to it (mostly sony has a good choice of music...excluding kal ho na ho)... here's some info on the music:

Meenaxi : Tale of Three Cities

http://www.meenaxithefilm.com

Cast - Tabu, Raghuvir Yadav, Kunal Kapoor, Nadira Babbar, Sandhya
Shetty

Director - M.F.Husain

Screenplay - M.F.Husain, in collaboration with Owais Husain, son of
M.F.Husain

Producer - Culture of the Street Films

Lyrics - Rahat Indori, M.F.Husain, O.N.V.Kurup

Choreographer - Vaibhavi Merchant ['O Re Chori' fame]

Camera - Santosh Sivan

Art - Sharmishta Roy

Make Up - Mickey Contractor

- "If you have Santosh & Rahman, anybody can make a good film." -
M.F.Husain.

- six songs and three dances.

- "Badan Dhuaan Dhuaan" sung by Asha Bhonsle and penned by Rahat
Indori. [Husain picked this among his all time favorite songs in
leading Marathi daily Loksatta]

"For one song, we started with no tune and no lyrics either. One
afternoon I bumped into Lataji and Ashaji in London. I asked Ashaji
if she'd do a song with me the next day. She had to go to Scotland
the next day. But she returned in a few days and we finished the
track Dua dua in four hours in London." - A.R.Rahman [Filmfare].
James Asher of the Buddha Bar features in 'Dhuan Dhuan' along with
the much-talked-about Sivamani.

- Qawwali "Noor-un-ala" - written by M.F.Husain. According to
Husain, "the qawwali is exultant about the presence of the light and
what a light it is! It is a Sufi thought, a thought that keep us
going even when there is pitch darkness." [Screen]. "There is a
qawwali written by me and sung by classical musicians Ustad Ghulam
Mustafa and his son for which Rahman has tuned unusual music. The
film opens with this qawwali, the picturisation of which is a major
highlight," says a happy Husain praising Rahman. [The Hindu]. This
song has been shot in pouring rain. The song was choreographed by
Italian National Award winning choreographer Illiana Czhtaristi,
under the able supervision of associate director Owais Husain [M.F.
Husain's son].

- "Rang Hai" - "It is the music of the film. It just did something
to me. It's almost divine," says Tabu. This song features a Lebanese
singer Dalinda along with Hossam Ramzi.

- "Yeh Rishta". - Tabu's solo song, by singer Reena Bharadwaj.

- "Do Kadam Aur Sahi". Shot in Prague and Jaisalmer, this song is an
amalgamation of the stories and the emotions that epitomizes the
core of the film.

- Yet another song features choreographer Remo [dancing in front of
the camera, not behind it] and newcomer Kunal. Rendered by
Sukhwinder Singh, it is being touted as his next "Chhaiya Chhaiya".
Apparently, before recording the song, Sukhwinder requested Rahman
if he could change! Sukhi got into a sexy netted black vest before
the recording to 'get into the mood.'
- BICYCLE BALLET : This imaginatively choreographed set piece is
worth looking out for.

"Yesterday there was a ballet of bicycles at night. We filmed the
scene where Tabu is caught in the street amidst the bicycles and
Rahman's score is innovative in this," says Husain. [The Hindu]

- one Malayalam song penned by O.N.V.Kurup; when deaf n dumb girl
Varnam thinks about her mother. [this was mentioned by MF Husain
himself in an interview with leading Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi at
the start of shooting; then it was said the film was to have 7
songs - 6 Hindi and 1 Malayalam. Not sure if this song is still
part of the film]

- "Its got a qawwali, a romantic song and an abstract song." -
Rahman [Filmfare]

- "Meenaxi belongs to three people – Tabu, Santhosh Sivan and A R
Rahman. Stunning visuals and the music score are the lifelines.
Rahman has composed a qawwali that's classical and contemporary." -

M F Husain [Times of India]

- In this film, M.F.Husain is adopting a method of film-making
influenced by the great Italian film maker Roberto Rosellini.

- The three cities in the film are Hyderabad, Prague and Jaisalmer.

- M.F.Husain says, "It is about an author who is writing a story.
The writer is a nawab who sees a girl Meenaxi at the wedding of his
sister. He is attracted to her and begins writing the story (Here
too there is fiction and fantasy). Without knowing much about the
girl he creates his own image of her and imagines her to be in
Jaisalmer and Prague. Yet he does not want to meet her. Then Meenaxi
comes into life - comes out of the book, out of the character. The
story moves back and forth."

- Ramp-model and Miss India finalist Sandhya Shetty plays a deaf and
dumb classical dancer and Tabu's best friend who only speaks through
her mudras.

- "I have fond memories of working in the film. It's an eye-opening
experience work with somebody like Husainsaab who is so passionate
about his craft. Just being his voice of expression in Meenaxi has
thrilled me no end. He's very giving -- whether in terms of creative
space or even budgets. I've looked through his eyes and understood
how much he loves the three cities -- Jaisalmer, Hyderabad and
Prague -- we shot in. Meenaxi was a lesson in liberation. It taught
me to be a free spirit and understand the pleasure of my work by
being different people, just like Meenaxi is." - Tabu [Rediff.com]

- Meenaxi is the first film to tie up with MSN's latest version
Messenger 6 for various promotional activities. MSN tie-up of the
film has been done by Movie Talkies, official representatives of MSN
for the Indian Entertainment Industry

CURRENT STATUS - Movie shooting is complete. Read Khalid Mohammed's
preview of the movie from Mid day. LINK. Audio release expected on
Jan 7th 2004.

What kind of movie title is Police Khiladi? :oo: Anyway, Yaaron Sun Lo Zara is an out an out Southern sounding track.

I've also heard the songs from 1947 - Earth in some newer south Indian film. And of course, there's Taal/Taalam. Both south versions featured horrible substitutes for Sukhwinder Singh.

That's what I said about Vishwavidhata. Didn't know the Tamil version of Jumbalika came first.

Maybe Sunny is thinking of Super Police? There was another song from that album, "Chinna Kutiyo Chingario" that has a Hindi version. I don't know the name of the Hindi version, but I think Udit Narayan sings it.

The Tamil version of Dil Se, Uyire, doesn't sound very good, particularly Chaiyya Chaiyya. Jiya Jale sounds okay, due to Janaki's voice versus Lata.

here is a honest one:

Lakeer

By Joginder Tuteja

After numerous instances of 'actors-turned-directors' and 'writers-turned-directors', 2004 is going to be year that will see at least 2 high profile choreographers turn into directors. (Ahmed Khan in Lakeer and Farah Khan in Main Hoon Na).
Coming back to Ahmed Khan, he brings together macho men Sunny Deol and Sunil Shetty together (after 'Khel' once again in 'Lakeer') along with John Abraham and Sohail Khan. Nauheed Cyrusi plays the sole heroine who is the love interest of both John and Sohail. Produced by Vivek Kumar, 'Lakeer' has lyrics by Mehboob and music by A. R. Rehman who gave super-dud 'Tehzeeb', last year.

'Nachley' is an addition to the bhangra pop genre. Daler Mehndi and Kunal Ganjawala make an honest attempt to make the number full of life but somehow the overall result is not as inspiring as one expects from a Rehman number. Output is just about average and the routine choreography doesn't help the cause much either. Surprising, because at the helm of affair is the director Ahmed Khan who has many well-choreographed songs to his credit. Chances are not very high that 'Nachley' would really make millions 'naach' to it's tunes.

'Shehzade' by Kumal Ganjawala seems to begin where 'Nachley' ends in terms of overall setup and mood. Like former, even this track is an attempt at being a fun-filled song full of youthfulness. Sadly, this track also doesn't rise from being mediocre and is clearly a repetition of several other Rehman youth numbers in the past.

Follows next is a sober love song 'Paighaam' by Shaan and Kavita Krishnamurthy. Nope! Even this track is least exciting and just seems to drag on. Mehboob's lyrics are poetic but certainly not meant for a man on street to sing around. Music too belongs to one of those 'heard-before' Rehman songs and Shaan's vocals are so subdued that you have to actually stress yourself to hear what he is singing.

As in case of most of the recently released albums, Asha ji comes to the rescue with 'Offho Jalta Hai' where she sings a duet with Sonu Nigam, who thoroughly seems to be enjoying himself in this track. A sensuous track, it has good rhythm and should pick up on the popularity chart.

'Rozana' is a youthful campus song by pop group 'Viva'. A song that has western touch throughout, it may be popular among the college going crowds. At some points the number does become a bit loud and the vocals shrieky but probably that was the intent in order to give the song a young look.

'Sadiyaan' is another love song after 'Paighaam' that has indeed some different music. The song has variations after every line and has a classic feel about it mainly due to Mehboob's lyrics. A soft track, Hariharan, Udit Narayan and Mahalaxmi sing it well.

Music of 'Lakeer' is mainly targeted at the college going crowd in the age group of 18-25 that may want to dance on to the beats of Rehman. Though the musical team does get successful to some extent, overall the result is not as satisfying and fulfilling as one expects when a master musician works with a high-profile choreographer!

Passable !!

Rating: **

I'll give 1.5/5..PASSABLE indeed!! rehman sucked here!

Lakeer’s music is a letdown, much more is expected when the music director is A R Rahman. The only two songs that have any lasting impact are Paighaam and Nachley. Let’s hope Ahmed Khan’s sense of film-making is a lot better than his sense of choosing tunes/music…
