I must admit I was quite skeptical of Lagaan being nominated and I still think Monsoon Wedding was more deserving and also that it stood a better chance. But my heartfelt congratulations to Aaamir Khan and team not only for making a fine film, but also for having enough conviction in it to make an honest attempt at getting it nominated. I wish the film luck for the final awards as unlikely as it seems that it might win.

i concur with majority that odds are in favour of amelie! as that film was a strong contender for nomination as best film too! like CDHD, but did not make in that category!! but honour is for all hindi cinema lovers!! victory is for clean and good cinema lovers, vote is for quality!! and purpose has been served mostly!! IMO!! Lagaan got ENOUGHacclaim it deserved!! that makes us all PROUD!

Well, only soar point was DVD by CT, that IMO did not stand enough to lagaan's stature!!

At least CT give us a super bit! go crouching tiger way! :) :p :DD: :baaa:

Quite honestly I think Amelie is the front runner for the award by a great margin, two things point clearly to this fact. One, that it was in the reckoning for the Best Film Category and two, that it has been nominated in Four other regular and important categories as well. The categories Amelie has been nominated for, are:
1. Foreign Language Film
2. Original Screenplay.
3. Art Direction
4. Cinematography
5. Sound
I think the nominations speak for themselves and the fact that the film has also done almost $30 million at the US box office suggest very strongly that Amelie is going to win the award for Best Foreign Film.
Nevertheless as far as Lagaan is concerned, it is still a great honour and achievement to have been nominated, only the third film from India to have been so honoured.

THird film actually to be honored Mother India, Salaam Bombay, Lagaan. Also I think Amelie should win but I was hoping for a nomination anyway.

You never know - after all Amelie didn't win the Golden Globes...
The low profile "No Man's Land" did. Maybe the academy can give Amelie all the four main awards and leave the Best Foreign Film for Lagaan :D

Amélie is the favourite, but "Lagaan" could win nonetheless.
Reasons:
- the Academy likes this kind of story (good guys win, bad
guy loses, morally correct, disabled person triumphs, the
Britts lose, the human spirit triumphs, not too dark or
disturbing... you get it)
- Amélie can get other Oscars for 'consolation'
- India winning the first time is overdue
- "Lagaan" is actually different and new because the
traditional Oscar film is not a musical since decades
- musicals are 'in' again (Moulin Rouge got nominated as
well) this year

yes Mike Hafner, good theories, but then again...it could be the same ol' scenario and Amelie would win..

but I was suprised that No Man's Land won the the Golden Globes.

Wow Lagaan nominated, indeed congrats to the whole team of Lagaan, but most of all to Aamir Khan who has been making sure this film is noticed. If it wasn't for him the film wouldn't have reach the scales as it has. Well done, you have made bollywood fans around the world proud!

Hah! screen/filmfare awards my ass! Lagaan has made it to the big league!

Amelie will most likely win Best Foreign Film, since it was really popular here in the US. It wasn't quite the phenomenon Life is Beautiful was, though. But the Oscars sometimes are surprising. Lagaan was a more serious film, it is set in the past, and it has the underdogs winning against the tyrants. Multiplex owners may not like Lagaan, since they could only show it three times a day at the most. But I just bought Lagaan on DVD (it is available in the US at Best Buy, for those curious), and I want to see it on the big screen with some friends.

Take that, K3G!
