Does anyone know if the Mahabharat DVDs freeze after a while? I believe they are released by Video Sound, and hence the question. And is there any difference between the box set and the separate DVDs?

The ones I have are from 1999-2000 and are all gold colored. They haven't frozen yet.

How is the PQ like?? Consider that the series was most likely filmed using PAL cameras (50 images per sec), so we don't expect a Progressive DVD.

I guess it's our last chance to buy these DVDs in Gold media, if still avail from old batches. All current batches of most Indian DVDs are not on Gold media any more. That is progress; From good to bad.

Quality's better than the VHS dubs from the originals I used to rent. I'm sure it is better than the VHS originals as well. Darker scenes do not look so great, but when the scene is brightly lit it is okay. 6 episodes at approximately 40-45 minutes each are included on each disc, and most of the discs feature a behind-the-scenes featurette, hence, some compression artifacts.

I'll have to review one of the discs again to spot any particular problems. The quality is consistent across the board. When watching these, consider that this is old video, and PAL to NTSC to boot. It would be nice if they released native PAL DVDs for those who could display them.

The end credits are chopped up. Instead of having credits at the end of each episode, the end credits are edited into one long sequence, with repeated music. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are included, except for the songs. Text synopses of the episodes are also included. Each episode is one chapter.

The behind-the-scenes featurettes are pretty interesting. I assume they aired on DD as a promotion for the serial. Footage includes interviews with cast and behind-the-camera talent as well as screen tests and how they did some of the special effects.

Does anyone know about the New Mahabharat DVD's released in the UK. It'a a condensed version (not the full series) but I'm not sure of the video quality, but it states that it is digitally remastered, so I take it the quality is better than the video sound version. It's a shame it's not the full set!
