Arsh bhai thank you! I bought the album yesterday, and its one of the best soundtracks of the year.

Tour-de-force of the album is Rahman himself, experimenting on new ways of presenting his music, and naturally the legend succeeds!

"Khoyee Khoyee Aankhein" and "Meherbaan" (2 versions of the song) are among the best of this year!

NP, my pleasure, I was waiting anxiously myself..at least, fresh and different..

Rehman's compositions, take time to grow and once they do, it is very difficult to take them out of ur system..ghar kar laeti haen, woh tunes..

In first 2-3 tracks, beat kinda feel..southish..innovation, is different beats for Ghazals..

It is very different from Zubaida!!

Saathiya..imho, had a distinct advantage of Gulzar's MARVELLOUS poetry..de jour!

Here Javaid sahab, does not give u that flavour that who is winning, composer or lyricist..same was for Fiza..

Synopsis
The story revolves around Rukhsana, a well-known playback singer, and her daughter Tehzeeb, who since childhood has nursed a grudge against her mother.

Tehzeeb suspects that her mother, a flamboyant personality – who has always been gossiped about in the magazines and newspapers – had something to do with the sudden death of her father.

Tehzeeb’s father was killed with a gunshot and Rukhsana was tried in court for murder but was declared not guilty.

Tehzeeb has grown up and married against her mother’s wishes to a novel writer. Rukhsana, in her 50s now, continues to be a popular singer in Bombay but has to keep pace with the trends in music. From ghazals she has to switch to disco remixes.

Tehzeeb stays far away from Mumbai in a beach-house with her husband. Ever since her marriage, she has not seen her mother for five years.

Rukhsana the mother is lonely and wishes to make amends with her daughter. On an impulse, Rukhsana decides to visit her daughter and son-in-law for a few days.

The mother and daughter are very polite and sweet with each other initially. But the tension between them surfaces. Tehzeeb confronts her mother with all her pent-up feelings. Tehzeeb resolves to find out whether her father was murdered or not.

An emotional storm gathers as the mother and daughter face each other. Tehzeeb will be satisfied with the truth and nothing but the truth.

The other pivotal characters in the story besides Rukhsana the mother, Tehzeeb the daughter and her husband the writer, are Tehzeeb’s younger sister Nazneen who lives with her.

Nazneen has also longed for her mother’s love but the mother has been unable to cope with her demands, as she is far too busy trying to hold on to her career.

A lecherous film producer, a rival playback singer to Rukhsana, a prying yellow journalist who wants to revive the murder case, and a sensuous woman who’s the publisher of the husband’s novel and also deeply attracted to him, are the supporting characters in the tightly-constructed screenplay.

The climax packs in a surprise and is emotionally moving. The aim of the film is to delve into relationships, comment on the disintegrating family structure today and underscore the state of modern life that has become extremely need-based.

The film calls for a bond of trust and love in every home and explores the concept of a working mother who is completely career-motivated. Throughout the emphasis is on making a film that is sensible and entertaining, cast completely in the format of a high voltage emotional thriller.

Six songs have been integrated into the plot besides several essential touches of humour and glamour. The aim is to shoot the entire film in a span of two months at a stretch and release the film by mid-2003.

The story, screenplay and direction are by Khalid Mohamed (who directed Fiza and wrote Zubeida). The cinematography is by India’s leading cinematography Santosh Sivan, the set designs by the award-winning Sarmishtha Roy, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad and the music by A.R. Rehman with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

its my favorite album since devdas for sure! rahman's best since zubeidaa! lobs and saathiya came after but saathiya was mostly a remake and tlobs wasn't this good...this is PURELY GENIUS!


MY FAVORITE SONGS ARE:
Meherbaan and Sabaq aisa ( arr makes a techno/jazz ghazal! who else can pullt hat off!!!)

Exactly Shiv, that techno treatment to Ghazals is INCREDIBLE..Nice vocals by Sujhata too.. :cool:

But, There is drastic change of Pace throughout the album, fast to slow to fast, slow again..

Is there a difference between the 2 versions of Meherbaan? So far doesn't seem like it, unless I am missing something minor.

As is typical with me and A.R. Rahman tracks, I'm rather underwhelmed at first, and then slowly, I can't stop playing them. Such is the case here - "Meherbaan Meherbaan" is a f**king incredible track although I thought it was him repeating himself.

Even "I Wanna Be Free" is a strange, delightful mix, and you all know how any other composer would have screwed something like this up.

But I agree with shivrk - probably the best song is "Sabaq Aisa", a song that really shouldn't work in theory but is hypnotic.

Tehzeeb is GOOD indeed, it grows on u, specially, after u get comfortable with techno beat ghazals..

Being hardcore Rehman fan, IMHO, it is B class work from Rehman, comparing to his A class work, namely, TAAL, Rangeela, DIL SE, TAAL..etc..and NOT to forget ZUBAIDA..

SAATHIYa will be B+ imho..LOBS is B too..

Re Khalid Mohd..I immensely liked FIZA too..

The Saathiya songs sounded better in Tamil. TLOBS was okay. Was it just me or were there 3 or 4 versions of Mera Rang De Basanti Chola on that album?

So far I've heard Khoyee Khoyee Aankhen and Sabaq Aisa, which is a gripping song. An interesting mix of melodic vocals and a techno orchestration. Who is the singer? KKA is good too. The strings sound sort of inspired by Persian pop. I will probably pick up the CD soon because what I've heard so far is terrific.

Absolutely...industry-wise there is no other music director to compare the maestro Rahman to!

In terms of mainstream songs, really only "Meherbaan", "Khoye Khoye" and "I Wanna Be Free" can appeal (although the last one is takes a bit of getting used to), which probably limited its performance in the music sales area. However, every song is quality work!!
