Main Madhuri Dixit: Sneak peek

Deepa Gumaste | October 08, 2003 11:11 IST

Positives

* Rajpal Yadav's polished act. Rarely do we get to see such a genuinely affectionate character and an equally heartfelt performance.

* A story that takes a realistic and somewhat irreverent look at Bollywood.

* Lyrics and music that fit the story perfectly.

* Brisk pace and lack of silly subplots.

* Antara Mali's studious imitation of Madhuri Dixit's dances, costumes and mannerisms.

Negatives

* Antara Mali isn't too convincing as Chutki.

* The director (Chandan Arora) and the heroine fail to depict the protagonist's transformation effectively.

Verdict

A pleasant film that's definitely worth watching for its endearing story and Rajpal Yadav's fantastic performance.

Watch out for the review of Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon tomorrow.

Antara: to Madhuri born. Almost.

Deepa Gumaste | October 09, 2003 13:26 IST

Rajpal Yadav is an unlikely hero.

Here is a man who has nothing obviously striking about his personality. Yet, he shines brighter on screen than most conventionally handsome, muscle-flexing stars who stand taller than his tiny five-foot-nothing frame.

An actor doesn't have to scream in order to be noticed, and Yadav proves this adage in editor-turned-director Chandan Arora's debut film Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon.

Contrast his onscreen unaffectedness with the performance of his leading lady Antara Mali, who actually has the author-backed role and a made-to-order platform to showcase her talent.

She imitates Madhuri Dixit like she was born to the part. Her dances, mannerisms, hairdos and costumes are exact replicas of the 1990s' screen goddess. But behind this glossy façade lives a small-town girl desperate to rise above her ordinary existence and follow in her idol's footsteps to become a famous star.

This is where Mali falls short of the mark. She is supposed to externalise not just Chutki's obsession with Madhuri, but also her desperation to be like her and her inability to cope with the pain and embarrassment she has to suffer in the process.

In these crucial moments of the film, Mali fails to step out of her own glamorous image and bring alive her character's inner turmoil.

However, barring the shortcomings in her performance, MMDBCH is an immensely likeable film.

It is rare to find someone from the film industry painting such an unabashedly honest picture of its own idiosyncratic ways. Apart from Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Guddi, hardly has a film tried to take such a serious peek behind the outer glitz of show business.

Chutki, the uncrowned queen of the Gajrola nautanki, gets into a marriage of convenience with Raja (Rajpal Yadav). That is the only way she can escape an arranged marriage with someone else and run away to Mumbai.

Raja, of course, is so much in love with her, he doesn't mind being used and even squeezes all the money he can from his overbearing father.

Only when they arrive in the city of dreams do they get their first brush with reality in the form of a slimy cabbie who extorts a huge sum from them before dumping them in the hands of an equally smooth-talking estate agent.

Gradually, Chutki and Raja are introduced to the gloomy side of the glamour world as they get thrown out of studios, laughed at for their naivety and humiliated every step of the way.

A poignant picture of failure stands before them in the form of a next-door neighbour and one-time aspiring hero who eventually became an extra, but continues to work in the industry nevertheless.

Another pathetic figure is Rumi, a typical wannabe who cons Chutki into believing that he is her passport to fame and tries to snatch her away from Raja. It is pretty obvious that neither Rumi nor anyone who hangs around with him will get anywhere in life.

Like thousands of others before her, Chutki refuses to give up hope and keeps doing the rounds of studios, waits outside producers' offices for hours on end and even gets herself a brand new look. At Raja's expense, of course.

Arora gives his film an attractive visual quality without using glamorous sets, locations or even popular stars. Also, unlike most contemporary films, MMDBCH does not suffer from the 'terrible second half' syndrome and keeps itself on track till the end. There are no jerks in the narrative on account of silly subplots or meaningless comic items.

Nitin Raikwar and Amar Mohile's lyrics and music are more functional than melodious but suit the situations they are used in.

MMDBCH announces the arrival of a talented filmmaker and an actor to watch out for. Arora's command over the art of storytelling and Yadav's brilliant performance makes this film a thoroughly entertaining experience.

Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon

By Taran Adarsh

It calls for immense fortitude to break the norms set by makers of formula-ridden Hindi cinema. Ramgopal Varma's MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON, directed by Chandan Arora, is an attempt at trying to give the audience something different.

So, does MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON succeed in its endeavour? Partly!

MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON tells the story of Chutki [Antra Mali], who aspires to be as famous as Madhuri Dixit. Living with her parents and younger sister in a small town, Gajrola, the youngster is a die-hard fan of Madhuri Dixit.

The story takes a turn when she decides to come to Mumbai to fulfil her dreams. But her parents throw a spanner and decide to get her married instead.

Raja [Rajpal Yadav] and Chutki have been childhood friends and though he doesn't express his feelings to her, his heart pines for her.

When Raja learns that Chutki's parents have chosen a groom for her, he hatches a plot: Let's get married, he tells Chutki, and board the next train to Mumbai to fulfil her dreams.

Chutki agrees and so do their parents and the two get married. Under the pretext of starting a business in Mumbai, Chutki and Raja leave for Mumbai.

But the starry-eyed Chutki and Raja have to face obstacles at every step. From finding an accommodation to entering a film studio to meeting a director, the ride to Bollywood is bumpy.

But her struggle pays off as she gets chosen for a music video and subsequently bags a film starring duplicates of top stars. Unfortunately, the film, when released, meets with a dismal response at the box-office.

Chutki is heartbroken. Raja and Chutki pack their bags and return to Gajrola. What happens next?

Although a number of films with Bollywood as the backdrop have been attempted in the past, MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON brings back memories of two films -- GUDDI [Hrishikesh Mukherjee] and MAST [RGV].

The first half of the film depicts the aspirations of the girl convincingly. The perils and the hazards that Chutki and Raja encounter at every step, from the time they arrive in Mumbai to facing the camera for the first time for a video, are straight out of life.

Director Chandan Arora has laced humourous and emotional moments in the first half. The light moments, in plenty, do succeed in bringing a smile on your face. At the same time, the thorny road to stardom has been depicted without resorting to running down the film fraternity or showing the film industry in a negative light.

Post-interval, the story continues to move forward, but the pace drops at this juncture. Although the story moves on a singular track, somehow it does not measure up to the expectations raised by the first half.

But the turn of events in the pre-climax -- when Chutki's film opens to empty houses -- uplifts the film again. The sequence inside a near-vacant cinema hall -- where the film is being screened -- is simply brilliant. Even the end of the film catches the viewer unaware and is, in fact, an apt culmination to the film.

Editor turned director Chandan Arora is a welcome addition to the growing list of directors for whom substance matters more than stars. Although the film doesn't star a single known name, the director has extracted wonderful performances from the entire cast. Technically too, the film is just right.

The songs -- most of Madhuri's numbers -- have been presented with a different beat and the results are satisfactory. 'Maar Dala' [from DEVDAS] and 'Dhak Dhak Karne Laga' [from BETA] can easily be singled out for near-perfect rendition.

Cinematography is inconsistent. The auditorium sequence, for instance, could've been better lit. Dialogues are realistic.

Now to the performances! Antra Mali is brilliant as Chutki, expressing the gamut of emotions with élan. The vulnerability that her character exudes comes across very well. Rajpal Yadav is outstanding yet again. The actor conveys the helplessness with utmost precision.

Raman Trikha is confident and excels in that one scene when he confronts Antra in her house. Govind Namdeo shines in a significant role. Sudhir Pandey is first-rate. Reeta Bhaduri is fair. Benjamin Gilani is competent. Vandana Sajnani is adequate.

On the whole, MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON is nothing short of an experiment which will meet with diverse reactions -- some would love it, some would ignore it. At the box-office, the film caters to a niche audience who have an appetite for different cinema. Business at multiplexes in metros should prove to be better.

Rating:- * *.

MMDBCH..GOOD and ORIGINAL... :baaa:

STARRY DREAMS - Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon
By Prema K. ©2003 Bollyvista.com

‘Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon’ is one more Ram Gopal Varma film that defies the rules of Bollywood. This is yet another one of his sincere attempts at giving the audience something different. But let us add that he has succeeded only partially.

‘Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon’ is the story of Chutki (Antara Mali) living with her parents and younger sister (a die-hard fan of Madhuri Dixit) in a small town. Chutki aspires to be as famous as Madhuri Dixit. The story takes a turn when she decides to come to Mumbai to fulfil her dreams. But her parents have other plans for her. They decide to get her married instead. Chutki’s childhood friend, Raja, (Rajpal Yadav) has never expressed his feelings for her but his heart pines for her. When Raja learns that Chutki's parents have chosen a groom for her, he hatches a plot. He tells her that they could get married and go to Mumbai to accomplish her dreams. Chutki agrees and so do their parents. Finally Chutki’s struggle pays off as she gets chosen for a music video and subsequently bags a film starring duplicates of top stars. Unfortunately, the film bombs!

Chutki is heartbroken. Raja and Chutki pack their bags and return to Gajrola. The first half of the film (except its unreal projection of Mumbai and the film industry in parts) touches you. Starry-eyed girls (and boys) who go through scary experiences in the city and in Bollywood will vouch for this.

Besides, Chutki looks too small town and ordinary to even hope to become a Bollywood star in the present times. The film has its light and funny moments as well as shows some of the harsh realities that every Bollywood aspirant has to face (unless of course, he/she has the right connections). The pace drops in the second half, which is a bit of a let down. The portions in the village, where Chutki dances like Madhuri Dixit and aspires to become a film star are authentic and humourous. The songs, most of Madhuri's numbers, have been presented with a different beat and the results are quite satisfactory.

Antara Mali tries hard to make Chutki look real. Rajpal Yadav performs with sincerity. On the whole, while 'Main Madhuri Dixit...' could have done with a better etched (and less convenient) plot, it deserves some points for being real, occasionally cute and original.

Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon

Reel Entertainment

Cast: Antara Mali, Rajpal Yadav
Director: Chandan Arora
Producer: Ramgopal Varma
Rating: * * *

By Parag Chandrabala Maniar

Introducing Chutki of Gajrola. All she wants is to follow in the footsteps of her idol Madhuri Dixit. She is so smitten by the screen goddess, her mannerisms, clothes, hairdos and style are exactly like Madhuri Dixit. Villagers call her Madhuri Dixit of Gajrola. And she wants to go beyond Gajrola and prove her histrionic talents. And the only way for her to try her luck in the Bombay film industry is to marry Raja (Rajpal Yadav) so that she can leave her village and come to Bombay. Raja loves her so much that he will do anything for her. He never questions her plans. So much so that he skips his meals just to see to it that she goes for the auditions comfortably.

Alas, getting a break in films is not all that easy. What Chutki faces is humiliation and pain, projected very realistically by Chandan Arora. But Chutki refuses to give up. She waits outside producers' offices for hours on end and even shows her photographs to people in the studio only to be ridiculed in the bargain. Chutki even gets a new look with Raja footing the bill. But it does not get her anywhere. The grease behind the greasepaint is manifest in the form of their neighbor who had come to Bombay to become a hero but lands up working in films as a junior artiste. There's also Rumi who claims to Chutki that he can get what she wants to achieve and tries to cause a rift between Raja and her.

Arora adds a visual finesse to the film without getting into the trap of sets, foreign settings or known faces. Antara plays the role of Madhuri Dixit perfectly. However, she falls short in bringing out the inner conflict between her dreams and the truth. Rajpal Yadav delivers a flawless performance raising Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon to a higher plane. Here is one film that is certainly worth a watch!

*** I have NEVER seen KOMAL..so happy with a film lately:

Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon (2003)
Director: Chandan Arora
Starring: Antara Mali, Rajpal Yadav and Govind Namdeo

RATING: 6/10

Introduction:
RGV productions, even if not directed by Ramu himself, have his distinct touch in slick production values. What the films lack is the soul that he puts in to the films he directs. MMDBCH is a very different look attempted at the glamour world of Bollywood; an honest look; and that is where it succeeds.

Synopsis:
A synopsis for a film with such a self-explanatory title seems redundant, but anyway, here goes. Chutki (Antara Mali looking ethereal in some scenes and plain ordinary in others) is a Madhuri Dixit fan. She has stars in her eyes, and her dream is to be like her. She is the life of her small town, where she is the star performer at all functions. Raja (Rajpal Yadav in an endearing performance which steals the thunder from Antara) is in love with her. He is ready to undergo all kinds of sacrifices to see her happy. To fulfil her dream of going to Mumbai and making it big as a star, Rajpal enters into a marriage of convenience with her. They reach the city of dreams, and start off pretty badly. The rest of the film is about how their preconceived notions get shattered and how their trials and tribulations help them garner a foothold in the city. On the way, they have to cope with a lecherous junior actor Rumi (Raman Trika carrying off his role convincingly) and a ‘filmi’ agent Pyarelal (Govind Namdeo) with ambiguous intentions.

Analysis:
The finest performance in this film without doubt is the one given by Rajpal Yadav. The ease with which he moulds himself into the character of Raja is amazing. No loud performance, no overt dialogue, he conveys all he needs to through his body language. His performance though not comic, prevents the film from becoming utterly dark.Antara Mali is good in her imitation of Madhuri’s mannerisms, her style et al. She also bears an uncanny resemblance to Madhuri in many of the scenes. She acts fine too, but what obstructs her from giving one of the best performances in recent years is her lack of show of ambition and desperation that the character needs. She shows sparks of brilliance, case in point being her confrontation with Trika. Govind Namdeo, Raman Trika and Sudhir Pandey offer good support to the lead players.

Technique:
Director Chandan Arora makes a good debut with an unusual subject. He is a good storyteller. The relationship between Rajpal Yadav and Antara has been unfolded with such minute care that it belies the fact that this is Chandan’s debut film. But, he probably forgot all his previous skills as an editor. The editing, by Amit Pawar is at fault as the film could have benefited by a cut of about 20 minutes. Choreographer Shabina Khan deserves special mention for making Antara dance like Madhuri. Songs penned by Nitin Raikwar and given tunes by Amar Mohile are run of the mill, but help in advancing the story.

Sidelights:
1) RGV’s long-standing film editor Chandan Arora debuts as a director with this movie.

2) RGV had offered Chandan Arora the movie “Shool” as his directorial debut; but Chandan could not accept the offer at the time and so “Shool” was directed by another RGV assistant E. Nivas.

3) Writer and director Anurag Kashyap had introduced Rajpal to RGV during the making of Shool, where Rajpal had a miniscule role. RGV liked him and offered him a role in “Mast” even though the filming for it was nearly complete.

4) Antara Mali has never met Madhuri Dixit till now, even though her father (well known photographer Jagdish Mali) has interacted with her a lot.

5) Rajpal Yadav won two best villain awards for RGV’s “Jungle” even though he was not the main villain (Sushant Singh was the main villain in “Jungle”).

Verdict:
Nice endearing movie with its heart in the right place. Though some parts of the movie will make you frown, you might end up leaving the movie hall with a smile on your face. Watch it for a good performance by Rajpal Yadav. He provides the most poignant moments in this film.

My VERDICT..MUST WATCH, for People who r willing/gutts to see a different film, with NON STAR CAST!

Both Rajpal Yadev and Antra Mali are too good in their roles..
It is fresh, its new, with NO, POT BOILING, NO MIRCH MASALA, NO INSPIRATION from hollywood flick..

I wish, Director could have possibly added some COMEO REAL STARS, Like DIXIT etc, to give it BETTER FACE VALUE! and also, could add a bit COMIC ANGLE esp YADEV is an EXCELLENT comedian, making it a SITUATIONAL COMEDY..would increase the INTEREST in the film..
