Well folks until a pro comes up with a review of Umrao Jaan here's my take;

Good: 1) Interactive menu's,25 Chapters including 6 songs.
2) English subtitles also on songs.
3) Transfer source appears to be in good shape with
regular wear & tear in transfer source for a movie
over 20 years old. Some scences appear without
any visible wear/tear or scratches.
4) Mono reprocessed for Digital is clear but flawed.
5) Close up scenes do have good detail & Sharpness.
Some scences show good color.
6) Extra's include original trailor.
7) Some effort on DEI's part to provide a decent
transfer from somewhat flawed transfer source.

Bad: 1) Transfer source lacks sharpness & detail in many
scenes, images blurry especially in long shots.Lack
of sharpness indicates transfer source being other
than original film elements.
2) Although sound is clear but distracting hissing &
crackling in silent passages.
3) Problem with color balance, colors appear faded in
many scences,some scences have brownish
overtones.
4) Lacks details in dark scences.

Verdict: A mixed bag but a definate improvement over the past releases of oldies by DEI. Not a complete letdown but not the best. For $9.99 not a bad bargin from Indiancd store.

Thanks Sk,Waiting for verification about Umrao Jaan being complete (had seen it alomst 20 years ago) It appears complete to me but two other guys have also raised the issue of if the movie is complete. so as soon as it's verified will modify my take on Umrao Jaan.

abey ARSH hahahaha who said I dont like what lakeshore says.. afterall usiki vajah se I saved 20 Bucks (20 years later and KOHINOOR)... now I wont buy that movie anyways... as I am awaiting for this month end when the real DEI releases come out..Himmatwala etc. And ARSH....I never said anything abt "quality vis-a-vis that review" I was more interested in lakeshore's comment abt completeness of the film !

Hopefully I can put this issue to rest. Kishsorya is not talking about the DEI version,I think he was referring to samrat's version sold earlier at Iweekly. The other two guys I was talking to were also referring to other versions not DEI's. DEI's version comes very close to what I had seen when movie was released in States. The song " Zindagi jab bhi" listed as missing in the other version by Kishorya is very much intact in DEI's version. Like I stated in my review DEI's release of Umrao Jaan although not the best but also not a complete letdown. Now it's even a better bargin at $8.99 at IWeekly.

Rented DEI's Umrao jaan not a great disc but not bad either. I have paid as much as as 20 bucks for crappy DVD's but for 8.99 Umrao Jaan sounds like a steal. By the way lake my folks want to me to thank you for posting all those oldies reviews. Even old folks like mine want to watch quality DVD's (alright pop u got it).
