For any actor, its an enviable state to be in- the tag of being the most bankable star in the business.Statistics have proved it.In the last three years, no other actor has dilivered consistent hits like Akshay has.Starting with Dhadkan and Hera Pheri, both went on to do phenomenal business all over India.Akshay followed them up with successes like Aankhen,Ajnabee,Awara Paagal Deewana and now, Andaaz, the biggest hit of 2003. "He has been the silent winner," says the trade analyst Komal Nahta."When the industry was going through its worst patch, there was only one actor who kept giving hits- Akshay Kumar," he says."And what puts him above the rest is the fact that he's not just a media-created superstar.His real market lies in B and C class centers-the interiors of India.If a film has to be bumper hit,it has to run successfully in these places.And Akshay has a tremendous following there.Thats the reason why even his bad films do good business in the interiors."
But the actor himself appears to be unperturbed about the ground realities,"Please dont hype me up because then, the expectations will sky- high.I like it this way-slow and steady.My fans are happy and so r my producers." he says, sipping his coffee in his make-up van.
The super-success of Andaaz is evident.Throughout my conversation with him, Akshay gets congratulatory calls from makers like Rajkumar Santoshi and Boney Kapoor.His new favourite director Madhur Bhandarker even drops in personally.Meetings have been lined up with Ram Gopal Verma and Anil Sharma.The atmosphere is stupefying.
