Ayngaran have noticed from thier marketing research (UK only)that most of thier titles are now being bought by non-speaking tamilians. They contacted me asking how to get wide across the Hindi market with some of thier new films, and I've sugessed some ideas. But I was stumped when they asked which titles should be released for the Hindi market!

They was thinking of Mani Ratnam films Bombay, Alay Payuthey & Uriye. But I felt that many have the Hindi version by EROS and Yash Raj Films is re-making the Hindi version of Alay Payuthey which many are looking forward to.

So which Tamil titles would you think many Hindi audiences would rent or buy at thier local video shop.

I would think films like Dheena, 12b, Nannda, Kadhal Kavitha would be apperciated. But some comments from you guys (and girls) can help...ta

PS.. Please comment on subject matter lets not deviate from it like most topics do!

Any and all Manirathnam movies will be great. It would be helpful if they include any other soundtracks available and add subtitles

Yes, please. Especially, if they can provide me with "Thiruda Thiruda" , "Agni Natchatram", and "Iruvar".
My copy of "Thiruda Thiruda" by Pyramid is the worst butchering of a technically superb INdian film you will ever see. I will be glad to toss it out and forget that I spent $20 on that crap.

Many people would love to see Kandukondain Kandukondain as a new release with better subtitles.

I have the previous version that I would love to show to my non-Tamil speaking parents but can't due to the speed of the subtitles and the fact that my mum can't read English. For the Hindi market are they going to include Hindi and Urdu subtitles - or have I missed the point of this post entirely?

I guess the most popular movies would be ones that have Hindi film stars in them, and those movies which are about to be remade in Hindi. I'm speaking from experience - I'm Bengali, but I've got the DVDs of Kandukondain Kandukondain, Mudhalvan, and Alaipayuthey. Films made by directors like Mani Ratnam and Priyadarshan might also interest non-Tamil speakers.

hope this helps,
Bhaskar

I own ALAI PAYUTHEY and KANDUKONDAIN KANDUKONDAIN, and I actually had to search for those. The store I usually go to took about a month to locate them, and they cost me a lot too. But they were worth it, especially ALAI PAYUTHEY. I would like all of Mani Rathnam's films for sure, and possibly all of Shankar's too.

Ayngaran have just released Shankar's first movie Gentleman (Tamil Version) on DVD. But you can also get the Hindi version on WEG which was supervised and ghost directed by him as well. Ayngaran are also going to release his second film Kahdallan (Humse Hain Muqabala) and the techno-teen flick Jeans by March 2003.

DVD's shouldn't cost you too much as they sell quite cheap on thier own website, but dunno about the service as I never have ordered from them.

On their last ten releases the subtitles have improved greatly, but the odd subtitle still comes on too fast.

I think Iruvar was and is one of his best work. A classic film with a great story telling style. I am not sure if the Hindi audience will be able to relate with Iruvar. After all the story is about the friendship between former chief minsiter of tamil nadu M.G.R and his firend Karunanidhi. They later became arch political rivals. I can vivdly remeber many scenes fromt
I think most users of Zulm will definetly like this film.

It is a beautiul film and I think Iruvar with english subtitles will be AWESOME.

Ayngaran are doing their best to get all of Mani Ratnam films. Thier bond is growing stronger ever since Ayngaran bought his produced film Dum Dum Dum, and have began to release some of his films on DVD. It will be only a matter of time when they bag his older movies.

I agree that Iruvar is a great film, but I doubt that many Hindi film audiences will fully relete to it due to its subject matter, which is quite diverse. I do think they would like Thiruda Thiruda, or even Nayakan, which was poorly dubbed in Hindi as Velu Nayakan in 1996.

Depending on rights issue Ayngaran might do Telegu films that were dubbed in Tamil or visa versa, but will not buy films just made for Telegu cinema as there is a poor market for them in the UK, where they are based. They have just released on DVD the film Bombay in both Telegu and Tamil on one disc.

They did ask EROS if they can use the 5.1 Hindi soundtrack and end credits (as end credits on the Tamil version is different) on thier DVD, but the set asking price was astronomically high as a "polite" way to say no to them.
