Hello all. I'm not a Hindi speaker; but have recently been so engrossed in the Bollywood movies. :p I'm taking up lessons to converse in Hindi. Love the language and culture!!!

Anyway, I particularly love the dance numbers typically found in the movies. Can you recommend any movies with great Classical dance scenes in them? My knowledge of what's out there is very limited. The recent movies I've seen with classical-type dance sequences are: Lagaan, Devdas, and Deewangee (last song in the movie). WOW!!! And I'd like to see more.

Sukriyah!!! (spelling?)

'Amrapali' has probably some of Vyjayanthimala's best dances in it ... others to check out for one or two ecxcellent classical dances by Vyjanthimala are 'Sunghursh', 'Suraj' and 'Jewel Thief'.

'Chitralekha' also has a few very good dance sequences.

All of these films are from the 60's.

All V.Shantaram films:
Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (already mentioned above and the best of all Indian classic dance films)
Geet Gaaya Patthron Ne
Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli (Fish without Water Lightening without Dance)
Sehra
There are more, can't recall the names at the moment.

I think, Paakeeza, Chitrlekha, Tajmahal, Mughleazam dances too come in the Indian classic dance category.

"Piya To Se" from Guide was a classical dance, wasn't it?

Dav1972 ( what is ur native lang.. if I may ask)

Unf, there are few new films that have a strong influence of classical dance (Deewangee was a $hit film and had nothing classical in it)

There are also very few films based solely on Classical music and dance... You should try for off-beat films...
I can think of a film by Shashi Kapoor / Girish Karnad combo.. Utsav... This was based on an indian folk tale, and the music & dance is very close to classical

Secondly, Hindi films off late have lost touch with its roots and what you see today is not really our culture. If you want a glimpse of our actual culture, peek into the regional lang films that many users have presented here. Most DVds are available with subtitles..so it shouldnt be a problem for you to follow the film. If however you only seek to learn Hindi, then old films are your only source :(

Give a try for Kohinoor also (that has a couple of very great dance numbers !)

Hi Dav, you also might want to take a look at Vijay Bhatt's Baiju Bawra

:) I'm grateful to see so many suggestions. I can see that I've just touched "the tip of the iceberg" regarding the vast number of movies out there. I have a lot to learn - or should I say watch. :p BTW, I'm an English-speaker living in Seattle, WA (formerly from Hawaii).
