New US DVD distributor Koch Lorber Films has signed an exclusive deal with CineCorp and Street Alien Pictures to launch a new DVD line of Bollywood films released theatrically through their Rajastan Films.

Rajastan was created by Gautam Shah of CineCorp, one of the leading distributors and exhibitors of Indian films in the US, and Street Alien, a new production and distribution outfit headed by Juan Carlos Zapata and Wayne Mogel.

The first group of Rajastan films to be released by Koch Lorber over the next 12 months includes spy adventure The Hero and Hindi horror movie Bhoot. DVD releases will be scheduled once the theatrical dates are confirmed in the coming months.

"The best Indian films have a kaleidoscopic charm and emotional allure that just captivates new audiences, wherever they're shown. With our DVD releases we are going to expand the opportunity for these films to reach both the arthouse crowd and curious mainstream audiences that may not have yet sampled Bollywood's delights," said Richard Lorber, president of Koch Lorber Films, in a statement.

Sounds too good to be true. Why would Rajastan Films release The Hero and Bhoot on DVD in the US when Video Sound and Spark have already made the DVD. Video Sound and Spark will make a killing by selling off the DVD rights to Rajastan Films. The amount of money Rajastan films would have to make from the sales of these two DVDs would be huge, and they will not recover the cost of buying the rights to these movies from the sales of the DVDs because only Zulm.net members will buy these DVDs which is like less than 1% of the entire indian DVD buying population, and if Rajastan Films is betting on Americans and people in Canada to buy these DVDs there in for trouble.

Why is when someone decides to release a good DVD they choose bad movies to author?? Why not go with some good classic films like Sholay or some older flicks like Raj Kapoor ones? Or better yet if you wanna cater to the younger folks rerelease DDLJ or HAHK with an excellent DVD!?

CineCorp owns the Cineplaza 13 theatre in New Jersey....so how does it consider itself to be the distrib?

the project looks interesting, but i think that ksingh is right - i can't see it being financially viable...

Ditto. I can somewhat understand BHOOT (the premise, etc), but why THE HERO?

got from another that is supposed to answer your question:

Quote:
The first group of six to eight Rajastan titles will be released over the next 12 months. All titles will be selected for their crossover appeal and will have had national box office exposure.

i don't see THE HERO meeting that criteria - so why did they choose it?

These films will never make anyone interested in Hindi films
:baaa:

Bhoot and The Hero cannot hold up to superior American horror films and spy thrillers.
