Much ado about Prem

Sukanya Verma | June 27, 2003 21:03 IST

After waiting for the release of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon for nearly three years, I have to say I'm disappointed.

There are reasons why I am not exactly crazy about Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. Here are a few:

Why did filmmaker Sooraj R Barjatya decide to rehash his own production, Chitchor, and transform it into the decidedly inferior Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon? While the earlier Basu Chatterjee film, starring Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab, Dina Pathak and Vijayendra Ghatge was a light-hearted comedy about a case of mistaken identities, MPKDH is a contrived mushy drama.

In MPKDH, Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor) is the darling daughter of Satya Prakash (Pankaj Kapoor) and Susheela (Himani Shivpuri). Susheela, like Dina Pathak in Chitchor, is obsessed with finding a perfect (read rich) husband for her daughter. She thinks she finds one in Prem (Hrithik Roshan).

Like Pathak, Susheela treats Prem like royalty and pressures Sanjana into liking him. Again, like Pathak, Susheela quickly changes her preference when she comes across the richer Prem (Abhishek Bachchan).

In Chitchor, Zarina Wahab had a kid brother played by Master Raju. A computer-animated parrot, Raja, and Johny the dog replace little Raju here. In MPKDH, Sanjana plays a fancy guitar as opposed to Zarina's humble harmonium.

But MPKDH has the unmistakable Barjatya stamp all over it -- Bihari servants, crowded home décor, oodles of mush and so-sweet characters.

Also, everyone chooses to yell and scream rather than have a decent conversation. Himani Shivpuri and Kareena Kapoor make an ideal mom-daughter screaming pair. Thankfully, Kareena tones down in the second half and is spontaneous during emotional outbursts.

Hrithik Roshan takes his role as a vibrant personality a bit too seriously and ends up with a shockingly loud performance. His body language is unnecessarily nervous and overtly dramatic. Right from his clothes to his expressions, everything is high-pitched.

No wonder Abhishek Bachchan's grim-faced, reserved avatar is a welcome change. Even though he comes in only post-interval, Abhishek wins the votes for making his Prem dignified and endearing.

The only other actor who has his expressions in check is Pankaj Kapoor. The veteran plays a graceful father with ease.

Perhaps Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon would have been an ideal launch for Hrithik and Kareena. The two have shared great onscreen chemistry in Yaadein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Mujhse Dosti Karoge. But after working together in so many films, their pairing seems to have lost its freshness.

A film's length -- MPKDH is a three-and-a-half hour film -- is not really a problem; after all, Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan was three hours 40 minutes long. The difference is that Lagaan gripped you completely. MPKDH doesn't. To add to that, it has songs popping up every few minutes. Anu Maliik's score is catchy but unnecessarily prolongs the climax.

Speaking of which, one is spared excessive melodrama, denials and betrayals though the film does end on a hopelessly hackneyed note.

What a pity, considering Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon is helmed by the man who made crowd-pleasers like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!

Maine Pyar Kiya had several hit dialogues -- Dosti ki hai nibhani toh padegi, for example. Even Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! boasted of subtle romantic nuances. Remember the swimming pool scene where Madhuri Dixit asks Salman Khan Hum aapke hain koun?

MPKDH is devoid of such touches. Instead, there are Valentine's Day celebrations (like in Dil To Pagal Hai) and beachside rendezvous (like in Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai) and water sports (like in Samundar).

The one thing MPKDH stresses on is the name of its protagonists, Prem and Sanjana. Sadly, the actors fail to rise above those names.

MPKDH does have its moments, though: Sanjana welcoming Prem (Hrithik) in a hilarious Sati-Savitri take-off; Prem (Abhishek) attempting to learn cycling; Sanjana teasing Prem (Abhishek) about his shyness.

But these are no excuse for an otherwise non-happening film from a filmmaker known to create magic on screen.

Rajshree production's forthcoming movie 'Main Prem Ki Dewani Hoon' starring Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan is slated for release on June 26th. Suraj Barjataya directs the movie. Recently Kareena Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Anu Mallik and Sooraj Barjataya were in Gurgaon, near Delhi to promote their film. According to the director Sooraj Barjataya, 'Chitchor' has inspired this movie, but its picturisation is totally different. Rajshree production has taken an important step to stop the piracy; they had asked the cinema owners to fix the price of ticket at Rs. 90 only.
smashit

Karan Johar and Chopras were trying to copys Rajshree style but in MPKDH Suraj Barjatya has tried to copy them. Na Khuda Hi MIla Na Bisale Sanam, Na Idhar Ke Rahe Na Udhar Ke Rahe. It was a torcher to sit3 hours 20 minitues in the hall. Just wastage of Raw Stock, Money and publics time. People will loose trust in Rajshree Movies, if they make like this.

Ok, here's the review you should all trust.......the Bhaskar review!

If you have seen Chitchor, then you shouldn't watch MPKDH. If you have seen Chitchor and liked it, then don't touch MPKDH with a bargepole. If you plan to go and see MPKDH, rent Chitchor instead.

Sooraj Barjatya has made absolutely no effort here - MPKDH doesn't just take the base storyline - it is a direct rip of Chitchor with a few added characters and watersports. The film is frankly painful to watch.........

Hrithik Roshan is way over the top in his role....Amol Palekar was talkative, but you liked the guy. Hrithik shouts, screams, and tells Himani Shivpuri (Kareena's mum) to 'get sexy' on the treadmill. Kareena thankfully isn't Poo all the way through - although Poo does show in a couple of scenes at the start. She is quite restrained in the second half......but has nothing to do apart from cry. Abhishek is good........he's quiet and dignified....and that comes across as a welcome relief when you've put up with Hrithik and Kareena screaming at the top of their voices for the past two hours. But the major problem with Abhishek is his character - its so under-developed that you just couldnt care less.

Character actors are all decent.....Pankaj Kapoor is very good as Kareena's dad.....songs are ok too....animations are embarassing.......

Barjatya has tried to become modern with this movie......so decides to include an impromptu conversation about love and sex between Hrithik and Kareena, which is sparked off when they see two people having a good old smooch in a car......

Overall, the film is a pain. Stay away at all costs...... :bangbang:

Mere Bhole Bhaskar
Mere Pyare Bhaskar.... :D

This film will (hopefully) be trashed by the audience in India, but guess what, it will still be a hit ..and guess where !
In UK and of cos in North America...
(someone in this forum had the gall to suggest that Indian audiences in India dont have a taste for Hindi movies !)

Thats cos they can only see this type of mushy stuff and not some real stuff (as in Bhoot !)

A decent one for HRITHIK DEEWANE:

SOORAJ DELIVERS AN ENTERTAINER MINUS SALMAN AND RAAM LAXMAN

By S Pankaj

Critic's I-View

click for larger view
Rajshri Production has been there for more than last fifty years, but for the first time it has witnessed such an atmosphere in which their latest movie, 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon', is released this Friday. Sooraj Barjatya, the director, who has made a sort of hat trick of hits with his last three films, 'Maine Pyar Kiya', 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' and 'Hum Saath Saath Hain', must have been under great pressure as no one in Bollywood wants to see a director succeed like this. The only director who could past a hat trick was Inder Kumar who delivered 'Dil', 'Beta', 'Raja' and 'Ishq' in a row.

Sooraj conceived this story three years back when Kareena had just started her career and Hrithik was already a big star. But, three years down everything has changed. Hrithik has been labeled as one film wonder. Kareena has no solo hit to her credit and the other man in the film, Abhishek Bachchan, is yet to prove himself at the box office. So Sooraj needs to be given openhanded applause.

True, like any other film, 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' is not a perfect film, but one should not underestimate it too. Unlike usual settings of Sooraj's earlier films, this has been set in contemporary age and for the first time any Rajshri film has been shot abroad.

Kareena becomes the first heroine for Rajshri to bare her body on the screen.

'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' is the first film where Kareena has been asked to carry forward the story with her each and every scene. While the two heroes of the film take this burden one by one, it is Kareena who has struggled hard to give a better performance. 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' is her story.

It is the story of Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor). She belongs to a middle class family. Having finished her college, she looks at life with love. Her elder sister Rupa (Tanaj Karim) is married to an NRI and is settled happily in the U.S.A. Rupa informs her family back in India that she has Sanjana's photos to a rich lady who is looking for an Indian girl for her son Prem. Prem is about to visit India and Rupa arranges his stay with her family.

click for larger view
Sanjana is told to behave like an archetype Indian girl. Her father (Pankaj Kapoor) receives Prem (Hrithik Roshan) at the airport. Finding him handsome, intelligent and a cultured boy, Sanjana's mother (Himani Shivpuri) just falls head over heels. Sanjana is asked to take care of Prem and also take him around for sightseeing. Sanjana with her band of girls first plays mischief with Prem and soon loses her heart to this young man. Sanjana and her parents are happy with Prem. However, Prem Kumar who was scheduled to arrive India last week postpones his trip by three days. Sanjana's parents are shocked. Her mother starts cursing the boy who is already staying with them. Her father leaves the decision to Sanjana. Three days pass and Prem Kumar (Abhishek Bachchan) arrives. He too falls in love with Sanjana, but she doesn't because she loves Prem till the end. And her Prem is Prem Kishen and not Prem Kumar. Sanjana's parents think otherwise and fix her engagement with Prem Kumar. Prem Kishen leaves the town as Prem Kumar is not only his boss but his close friend too and he does not want to ruin this marriage.

Who will win is any body's guess? The older generation is aware of the seventies' 'Chitchor'. That too was a Rajshri film. It was Sooraj who made 'Nadiya Ke Par' as 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' and now he remakes Chitchor'. Set in modern era 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' is a deviation from the old Rajshri trend. Sooraj himself agrees to it and is ready to adjust accordingly.

He has worked hard in this film too but there is no Salman Khan, no Madhuri, no Alok Nath, though Reema Lagoo is there as a loving mother of Prem Kumar. The team is settled for the first time. However, there is not as good tuning as was there between Sooraj and Salman in his last three films.

And more importantly, the music composer Ram Laxman too is not there. Instead, Anu Malik gives this time the music.

How he impressed Sooraj is yet to be revealed. But it is Anu Malik only who has failed in this film. Except one song Teri Zindagi Mein Chali Aayee, none other could become the soul of the film. Sooraj made a mistake in selecting songs and music this time.

But in other respects, 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' is better than other trashes. It is a full three-hour entertainer. Maybe if the duration was cut short it would have become more appealing. Mukthar Ahmed must pick up his scissors again and chop some parts of the film before it gets late. Rajan Kinagi has captured life and nature beautifully on the screen again. Bijon Das Gupta's sets look contemporary and it is Jay Borade who brings life to dance steps even though the music is not so good. Among actors, the film belongs to Kareena Kapoor. Hrithik comes a close second. Junior B is, as always, struggling behind to find a place for himself in the tough race to reach to the finish line.

MAIN PREM KI DIWANI HOON **

Dir: Sooraj R Barjatya

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan

Lord, it’s another Wail-entine’s Day. Hundreds of couples are at a bash, playing games masterminded by two cacophonous hosts.

There’s also a weird competition, in which the guy who gets his girlfriend’s name tattooed on his arm is chosen best boyfriend. Is that what’s called the mark of a man?

It’s a very silly and prolonged scene. And sadly, Sooraj R Barjatya’s Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon is filled with scenes like that.

In describing the relationship between Sanjana (Kareena) and two guys named Prem (Hrithik and Abhishek), the director stretches things far enough to make you uneasy.

In fact, the first half has so many pointless moments that it would make sense to actually walk into the hall after the interval.

Spontaneous: Kareena as Sanjana
Even otherwise, the tale isn’t new. Quite clearly, it’s a modern take-off on Rajshri’s Chitchor, with many doses straight from the Yash Chopra love triangle factory.

The addition of very typical Barjatya characters like the servants, the family dog and a talking parrot make the feel oh-so predictable.

The setting is a town named Sunder Nagar, where Sanjana spends time singing about how she’s a ‘Papa Ki Paree’.

Papa (Pankaj Kapur) is a publisher who loves wearing caps marked ‘Dad’, and snubbing his wife (Himani Shivpuri) by addressing her ‘Bas, Susheela’.

Sanjana’s US-settled sister Roopa informs her that a guy named Prem will land in India and spend time with them.

Prem (Hrithik) flies in by Air Sahara (what!!), talks till you need to shut your ears and in no time, makes pals with everyone in the house, including parrot and dog.

Prem and Sanjana are poles apart. He likes river rafting, horse-riding, skiing and underwater diving, and she loves dancing and poetry. But they slowly fall in love and she is even willing to learn a lesson or three in adventure sports.

Things are hunky-dory for the two, till Roopa sends an e-mail saying that Prem had to postpone his visit, and would visit India a few days later.

Prem No 2 (Abhishek) turns out to be Prem No 1’s boss. Needless to say, he also falls for Sanjana.

And he is a fan of the same poet and, like her, doesn’t drink tea. What follows is so predictable that you’re not left with any surprises whatsoever.

The film’s biggest drawback is that the story or characters don’t stir you at any moment.

One is also stunned at how Barjatya, one of the best directors of the 90s, couldn’t take the risk of providing something new. Honestly, if these big names in filmmaking don’t give us fresher stories, who will?

Yes, on the technical side, Rajan Kinagi’s cinematography is first-rate, particularly in the outdoor locales.

Music director Anu Malik has a couple of good tunes, though singer Chithra shrieks at times. Choreographer Jay Borade impresses on some numbers.

Of the cast, Johnny Lever (Abhishek’s secretary) tries to be funny, but isn’t. Pankaj Kapur and Himani Shivpuri are natural.

Hrithik looks good - but tends to go overboard with his enthusiasm, especially in the first half. Kareena is spontaneous and Abhishek is convincing.

But on the whole, there’s little to make you go diwana or diwani.

Nahta gives it 4.5/10. Adarsh looks to high, Nahta about
right, but I have not seen the film so what do I know. :wotever:
Will see it next week end, together with Matrix 2 in IMAX.
