Chalte Chalte An All India Hit; Jhankaar Beats Gets The Better
By: Abid
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Though the successes of films just released were not representative of the how unique the films were that released, Bollywood has apparently done nothing different in terms of its films released but has suddenly met success. Ishq Vishk, Andaaz and Chalte Chalte were certainly not novel releases. Small films like Nayee Padosan and Khwahish are nothing new to Bollywood as Bollywood is always graced with small films aiming to please. But each of those films, though Nayee Padosan more than Khawhish, were successful. Nayee Padosan has had a better outcome at the box office compared to Khwahish, but non of them can be called successful still the extremely low selling price means that non of the distributors loses money in Nayee
Padosan and Khwahish. This week, two more ´under-represented´ films released with Jhankaar Beats and Supari. Both feature relatively unpopular names, a lieu of newcomers in each and novel topics different from usual Bollywood.

And like the week before, one has turned out a winner. Jhankaar Beats, which is the second epitome of a tribute to music composer R.D. Burman, has done surprisingly well, again, all things taken into consideration. More so, it has surpassed its competitor, Supari, by a long shot.

The first indications are that Jhankaar Beats has got the better of Supari. It is good news for former journalist and now director Sujoy Ghosh. In the metros and the big centers the movie is appealing to the young audience and it is also good debut for the first time distributors, Twentieth Century Fox, who have gone in for a limited release with just 50-55 theaters. Supari, on the other hand is another ´underworld movie´ and despite the talented Nandita Das, has not fared well. Supari is being released by Yash Raj Films in Mumbai only, and by WEG elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Dreamz Unlimited, has celebrated the success of Chalte Chalte. Surprisingly, its most un-novel film to date has done the best for it. And as for the final words on Bhoot and Andaaz, thus far Bhoot has earned 13 crores in India and Andaaz has earned 14.30 crores in India, 316,000 pounds in UK and 150,000 $ in USA.

Film
Chalte Chalte
Starring
Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Satish Shah, Lilette Dubay, Jhonny Lever, Jas Arora
Released
June 13th, 2003
Summary
The third presentation from Shah Rukh and Juhi´s home production team, Dreamz Unlimited has
hit the bulls eye this time around. The movie which has budget which is 20 % of the last Shahrukh solo venture, Devdas, has overtaken the more lavishly mounted movie at many centers specially in Delhi city and a few places in North India.

The normally weak, Shahrukh territory of East Punjab has also returned good collections. First week all India percentages range from 90% Mumbai, 86% Delhi, 85% Ahmedabad, 90% Kolkata, 92% Hyderabad, 70% Jodhpur and 84% Lucknow. First week all India gross approximately 8.85 crores with 220 prints.

In the overseas market, $827,000 has been reported for the USA and 373, 569 pounds for the U.K.

Final Verdict
The 10 crore (confirmed) movie, is on its way to becoming an all India hit. The movie already had a profit of 9 crores on the table, for the producer but as always each distributors profit and loss has to be taken into account in India and on that count no distributor will lose money, in fact by the end of the second week most of them will get profit. In the overseas the movie has done very well.
