Sholay’s 'claim to fame' wasn't the 2.35:1 AR but that it was on 70mm - which has a AR of 2.20:1. Above screen shots show a AR for 2.1 - probably slight inaccuracies of DVD mastering/framing.

Ali :baaa:

So, it means that Ultra DVD is in the original Director's chosen Theatrical AR. That's good.

I thought Sholay's claim to fam was that it had loads of big stars in it, and ran in one cinema for 5 years..........

They weren't that big stars at the time of the making of the movie or even at the time of the release. Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan were second choice. First choice was Pran, for Amjad Khan's role, who didn't accept for whatever reason. I think I read somewhere (perhaps on zulm '100 best movies' thread), that even Dharmender was't the first choice either.

One thing for sure. Everyone associated with SHOLAY did become Very Big Star after the movie's success.

I was wondering if anyone knew how the "Criterion Collection" chooses which movies it will produce on DVD. What I mean is what are its criteria. If the idea is to preserve in original format directors versions of films that are great around the world I can only think of Sholay which deserves this treatment. I know criterion does foreign films so how would one go about telling them that this is an important film that defined a generation of bollywood movies. THE ONE, the ORIGINAL masala film. Can we nominate Sholay to the criterion people?

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, The Criterion Collection, is a collection of movies produced on DVD that are selected and analyzed to the nth degree. They are a minimum 2 DVD sets with loads of extras, directors commentary and so forth. If someone could dig up stuff on Sholay (there must be lots) it would be an ideal candidate for the criterion collection, check their collection out at http://www.criterionco.com

Khaira, a long time ago we had a discussion abt this... you should check the older forums ! We had talked abt this and also the refusal of Criterion to author this DVD.. apparently the original negative rights are held by the Hinduja brothers and are currently in litigation !

Sholay is probably more of a classic to the Indian audience and not so much an international classic, and since cinephiles in the West have seen Seven Samurai and Sergio Leone's films, Sholay probably wouldn't be considered a classic by many of them. The films Criterion releases are of general interest to Western film buffs.

This is very true, but also sad at the same time, since our true Indian masterpieces are overlooked on an international scale. I've even mentioned a few film titles by Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Shyam Benegal, & Govind Nihalani to Criterion a few times before in the past, but nothing progresses.
