» MERCHANT/IVORY GO CRITERION

The Criterion Collection has just announced plans to release a slate of discs from the award-winning filmmaking duo of producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory. The Merchant Ivory Collection, a joint production of Criterion and Home Vision Cinema, arrives this August and will feature 1979's The Europeans and 1984's The Bostonians. Bombay Talkie (1970), Heat and Dust (1983), Maurice (1987), and Quartet (1981) will follow later in the year, and the series will continue into 2004.

Bombay Talkie extras include, perhaps the best extras you have ever seen; perhaps better than the main film:
Helen, the Nautch Girl.

------Bombay Talkie (1970) and the 1983 hit Heat And Dust.
Both films were released on DVD recently in the US by The Criterion Collection. Bombay Talkie comes with the Ismail Merchant-directed documentary Helen, Queen of Nautch Girls. Actress Helen leads a zesty typewriter song sequence in the former film.

BTW, as I mentioned in one of the earlier threads, as per Criterion reply e-mail, Criterion will participate in Ivory Merchant DVDs, but they are not 'Criterion Collection'.
After seeing the new news article where they mention IM films as Criterion Collection, I e-mailed them again. I'm sure they will reply back in a day or two.

Jon Mulvaney [mulvaney@criterionco.com] of Criterion Collection replied, confirming what I had said above.

Here is the reply:

Criterion participated in the production of these discs, but they will not be released as part of the Criterion Collection.
