I really enjoy hard gangster flicks but intelligent comedies come to mind- My favourites include Company, Satya, Kurukshetra, Mission Kashmir, Parinda, Don, Sholay as well as Monsoon Wedding, Salaam Bombay & Dil Chahta Hai.

Can anyone recommend films of similar genres to the above? I think most Bollywood movies are crap & I hate most songs so please recommendations for stuff like Devdas etc.

G - Movies....some of them wouldn't be that hardcore....the only hardcore, realistic, gangster movie that was made is "Satya"...no other movies comes close to that....another one, "Bandit Queen" is pretty much gangster...good movie but the thing is, its very very disturbing and this is a banned movie....contains nudity, explicit language and explicit rape scenes....dare to watch it if u got guts...haunt the shit out of me for 1 month :)

Comedies

Golmaal
Chhoti Si Baat (probably one of the most intelligent Indian comedies I've seen)
Padosan

Other good films

Bhumika (the only Shyam Benegal film I've seen, but others can recommend more films by him)

Koshish

Most anything by Satyajit Ray

Wasn't Baazi (Ashutosh Gowariker) a remake of Die Hard?
