Also, Ramu appearently had a meeting with Keanu Reeves in discussions about his ambitious project "ek".

The role he must have in mind is of a dead tree :)

Some of those look to be relatively ambitious. I hope RGV blows us out of the water with these films.

Bhoot comes out this weekend, doesn't it?

There's an interview on this website with Ramu, he says:

"My next directorial venture, Ek [Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Fardeen Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Nana Patekar], will cost 10 times more than Bhoot. It goes on the floors in September-October."

I've got to say this flick looks ACE! Amitabh, Ajay, Fardeen, Vivek and Nana!

Ramu: The power of one? (Ek)
Saibal Chatterjee
May 5

The new-millennium Devdas, one of the biggest risks the Mumbai film industry has ever taken, paid rich and handsome dividends last year. This year, however, The Hero, made at a whopping cost of Rs 55 crores for no apparent rhyme or reason, isn't faring quite as well as the Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus. At best, the Sunny Deol starrer might just about scrape through.

But, true to form, Bollywood is already on to its next big gamble. The countdown has begun for Ram Gopal Varma's ambitious international project Ek. Fat cat financier Bharat Shah has joined hands with the US-based Raju Patel (of Kaante fame) to bankroll "the most expensive film ever made in Mumbai".

Will Ek be ready for release in 2003? Given the speed with which Ramu usually works, the answer to that question should have been in the affirmative. But considering the daunting size of the project and Ramu's own avowed reluctance to plunge into the venture until everything is in complete readiness, the production of Ek might spill over into 2004.

In a recent television interview on a business news channel, the prolific producer-director admitted: "I find the project scary. I sometimes wonder whether I can pull it off." Was that healthy scepticism or cultivated humility? No matter what it was, can anything really be beyond the irrepressible Ram Gopal Varma? Even a film that, according industry estimates, could cost anything between Rs 60 crores and Rs 100 crores? Not when he has Bollywood's biggest moneybag backing him to the hilt.

Ek is obviously a dream project for both the director and the financier and it is obviously fraught with risks. But here are two men who seem to thrive on extremes. The industry has been floundering for quite a while now, but neither Ramu nor Shah has shown any signs of panic. They are clearly going ahead with Ek.

Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgan have already been signed up to head a stellar cast that will comprise a phalanx of other Indian and foreign actors. Ramu is currently scouting not only for actors but also technicians from the West. "I will have a clear idea of the film's exact budget in about three months," he reveals.

"The film will have plenty of special effects," Ramu says, explaining why Ek is going to cost a bomb. Although he asserts that "it is too early to talk about its theme", it is already known that Ek will be a thriller that will revolve around the workings of Indian military intelligence agents out to thwart the designs of terrorists.

Ramu has been keen to delve into the world of RAW agents for a long time but he had kept the idea in abeyance because he knew the expense that would be involved in the making of such a film. He had been in touch with Bharat Shah for months, but it was only after the Rs 50-crore Devdas clicked commercially that the financier felt confident enough to give Ramu the green signal.

Ek will be an international project in the truest sense, with the Indian actors speaking in Hindi among themselves and in English with the foreign members of the cast. "The only way to make a film of this magnitude financially viable is to target the global audience," says Ramu, whose filmmaking universe seems to be expanding with each passing year.

The hits may have stopped flowing, but the big plans and ambitious ideas obviously haven't dried up. Isn't that what makes Bollywood as exciting as it is exasperating and men like Ram Gopal Varma and Sanjay Leela Bhansali daring dreamers just as much as they are gargantuan gamblers?

Last week Ram Gopal Varma, one of India’s most respected filmmaker flew down to Shornur in Kerala to meet Mohanlal, on the sets of his latest film Balettan.
Ramu had gone to narrate the story of his new film Ek starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgan to Mohanlal. And Ramu wanted the Malayalam star to do an important role in the film.
After hearing the story, Mohanlal has agreed to do the role provided his date’s match with that of the other two actors. It was Ramu's Company that won him the best supporting actor at the IIFA Awards.
The shooting of Ek is scheduled to start by August and other details are yet to be finalised.
