Bachchan fails to draw crowds for Armaan

WRONG DIAGNOSIS?: Amitabh Bachchan plays a doctor in Armaan
Amitabh Bachchan no longer single-handedly opens films. Which is in keeping with a 60-year-old performer in Bollywood.

What has been path breaking though in Bachchan’s case is that his films, since the television show KBC made him an eternal cash cow, have commanded near cent per cent openings — even if the movies in question have failed in the long run.

The phenomenon definitely powered by the sight of the sexagenarian on the films’ posters and television promos.

Bachchan’s first cinema outing in 2003, Armaan, however has broken the record string of A-grades on his report card, registering an abysmally low 56 per cent first week draw.

The available figures are for the Bombay territory that covers besides major parts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, the entire state of Gujarat.

But as Indu Mirani, editor, Box Office puts it, “Armaan, has fared equally bad nation-wide, so the numbers are representative of the whole country. Also, Agni Varsha may have had a similarly low opening, but in that film, Amitabh merely made a guest appearance.”

So what went so drastically wrong with Armaan, despite the Bachchan logo in white wig embossed on its posters?

Analyses Mirani, “It has more to do with the film that seemed so boring to begin with in its promos, than Amitabh — who I think has passed the stage when a film’s success or failure can be solely attributed to him.”

Adds Taran Adarsh, editor, Trade Guide, “It is surprising, but on second thoughts, an Anil Kapoor-Amitabh Bachchan combination would have generated curiosity a decade ago, not today.”

Bachchan’s next film in line is the ‘experimental’ venture, Kaizad Gustad’s Boom, not a sort of film that necessarily generates buzz in the trade.

Is the actor’s run this year likely to meet disappointing fates repeatedly then? Rebuts Mirani, “Each film takes its own graph and if Boom has something better to offer, its openings may not necessarily be affected.”

In 1988, after a spectacular comeback, Bachchan had encountered his first flop — Ganga Jamuna Saraswati. Three more box-office duds followed, sparking rumours that he’d lost his Midas touch.

This is his first no-show in a while. However, writing this never-say-die actor’s career obituary as history suggests is an eternally foolhardy proposition.

Bachchan’s first week in BOMBAY territory

• 2000 Mohabbatein — 99.89 per cent
• 2001 Aks — 76.41
• 2001 Ek Rishtaa — 88.89
• 2001 Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham — 100
• 2002 Aankhen — 94.55
• 2002 Hum Kissi Se Kum Nahin — 82.59
• 2002 Kaante — 89

And the loser is…
2003 Armaan — 56

i haven't seen ARMAAN but the promo's made it look like a shit film :fight: :fight:

i agree with 1 of the critics amitabh/anil combo would have been excellent 10 yrs ago or even better today if the choice of film was alot better than ARMAAN :hmm: :hmm:

amitabh still has a impressive line up of film to come over the next 2 years and if promoted well he can still open the movie with good % :bash: :bash:

To start off with AB's role in the movie is only about 25mins and fromt the promos it was pretty apparent that it was not his movie.....and come to think of it, people were most dissatisfied with his look!..........at the end of the day, this movie wont effect him and to say that he is finished is actually quite funny..........!

All I know is that we discussing too much about Aby Baby...everyday there's new thread related to him. Any way how can K3G success be credited to Aby Baby when there were million other stars in that film and not forgetting it was Karan Johar's second film after KKHH...

Not giving AB credit for K3G is absurd if you call Armaan an AB film because his role in K3G was about twice as long as Armaan lengthwise.

Either way, it doesn't matter. AB being finished on one film where he is for 25 minutes is pointless talk and would only be news on a day when there is no news. The author of that article has too much time on his/her hands and couldn't be bothered to LOOK for newsworthy items. A sloppy effort which is not worth talking about and which I have just wasted time...writing about.

As Kareena Kapoor says "A spade is a spade, a flop is a flop!"

Armaan didn't have much pre-release hype. The promotion could've been much better, and the music as well. The script isn't the fault, because the audiences don't know wot they will see. But it's the story that pulls in the audience.

In the film, you have Amitabh Bachchan, who dies before the interval. Then, Anil Kapoor, who is always romancing heroines half his age. There is Preity Zinta, who has a huge fan following, and Gracy Singh, a fresh face. The casting was a big problem. They could've gone for someone younger, like Akshaye Khanna, Saif Ali Khan, etc.

Amitabh is clearly not finished. It has to do with the film. He has the hugest fan following in India, probably the world. The only way he is finished is if he stops acting.

I have a feeling that this following of Amitabh's is more for his older films than for his current films. If he is still such a big draw, people would flock to his films just because he is in them.

Your Kareena Kapoor quote is definitely sig material :)

Personally, i still think, EK rishta, Mohabtaen, worked for AB, mainly..

While, Ek rishta, more specifically..
He was THE BEST THING, in the entire film..

Mohabtae..I did not like AB either, in that film..

K3G, IMHO, in the end, AB was the BEST THING in that film, too..

As a big Bachchan fan myself, I truly felt that he was finished post-bullshit films like Lal Baadshah, Mrityudaata, and Barda Miya Chota Miya. But he did give a consistent and restrained performance in Mohabbatein. And after his awe-inspiring, daunting performance in Aks -- it would be absurd to say that he is "finished". Infact, it convinces me to say that even today, no one in bollywood could match his greatness.

Armaan opening was good for special appearance movie. It made more than ek aur ek gyarah, ishq visk and other hit movie. It got good overseas too

No, I'm not a Shah Rukh fan or Amitabh hater. But, I think Shah Rukh has more cinematic sense and takes an interest in the filmmaking process far more than the old dude. Amitabh was good in some 70s films. But he's been largely irritating me post Namak Halal
