Hey all, have any of you (particularly Sunny) have seen Padaiyappa, starring Rajnikant and Ramya Krishnan? How is the movie, and more importantly how is the DVD released by Ayngaran? Is it anamorphic with 5.1 sound? Is there any re-release planned for this movie?

On a somewhat related note, does anyone know of Madhavan's latest movie called Priyaman Thozi? What's the story about and when can we expect it in theatres?

Thanks for ur input!

Padaiyappa is 16/9 and 5.1 DD.
The movie is an absolute delight for a Rajni fan and a fair one for the others. Sooo much better than BABA...
The DVD was released end of lasy year I think, so probably there won't be any rereleases soon.
There is also a DVD released by Pyramiid which I think is not 16/9 but it is 5.1 DD.

Padiayaapa, is one of the better Rajnikant movies released. Has a traditional rural story and some decent Rajnikant Moments...Highlight of the film is Ramya Krishnan who is excellent as the mad Neelambari!!!

The DVD is in Anamorphic 2.35:1 but the quality isn't as great as expected...the 5.1 sound is excellent and makes Rahman's score come alive - DVD worth buying if your a Rajnikant fan and for the 5.1 sound quality. English Subtitles are also much better then most of thier releases.

The Ayngaran DVD is much better then the Pyramid DVD version which is non-anamoprhic 1.77:1 with fake 5.1 sound.

Mahadevan next film is actually Nala Dayamathi, which is produced by Kamal Hassan and directed by Mouli. The story is about an Cook who moves to New Zeland to make a living. It is comedy based and is said to be better then Anbe Sivam, one of the funniest movies in Indian cinema released this year!!!

Priyaman Thozi is expected after Nala Dayamathil, and is a typical Vikraman story about love and the pursuit of it... Since it is Vikraman there should be some nice heart-warming moments as seen in his last blockbuster Vanthapola.

On the same note, how is the quality of Gentleman? Did it originally have a stereo or mono soundtrack?

oh hell yes i'm a rajnikant fan!!! have u guys seen giraftaar?? As cool as AB was in that movie, Rajnikant totally commanded the screen for the 20 mins that he was in the movie!! That cigarette scene is one of the highlights of Bollywood during my childhood!!! And more of his coolness was confirmed even after all these years in that crappy movie called Bulandi. Rajnikant was AMAZING during that 5 min role...

yeah i was wondering about this movie cause i kept on seeing a scene on B4U in which a bearded Rajni has a confrontation scene with an old-looking Ramya. I researched online for what movie this was from, and came across the title...

I can't wait to watch this movie!!

How popular was Rajini in Hindi films? How many films did he do? I know of Geraftaar, Hum, and Andha Kanoon.

Baba has a reference to Padaiyappa in it. It's pretty silly and kind of ironic, since the filmmakers probably expected everyone to be cheering, when in fact nobody went to see the movie!

actually Rajnikant is still a famous Hindi actor... nowadays he's still more known for his Tamil movies but in his prime (in Hindi cinema) i would say that Rajni was on par with lets say Sunil Shetty or Akshaye Khanna of today....

Lets see he did Andha Kanoon, Geraftaar (Special Appearance), Bewafai, John Johnny Janardan, Bhagwan Dada,Jeet Hamari, Meri Adalat, Wafadar, Mahaguru, Dosti Dushman, Khoon Ka Karz, Insaniyat Ka Devta, Farishey, Phool Bane Angaray, Aatank Hi Aatank (with Aamir Khan) and of course, Chalbaaz (with Sri devi and Sunny Deol).

Padaiyappa is a much worse film than say the worse film e.g Yaadein. And probably AR Rahman's worse work...

I could never understand the fascination Indians have with losers like AB and Rajnikant...I think I have some kind of Indian genome deficiency :p :D

And no offence but as far as I remember Padaiyappa is a typical cheap, crass, laughable Tamil film designed for rickshaw-pullers.

The movie was not that bad. It was pretty entertaining and for the first time in a Rajini picture it was nice to see a female role given equal importance as Rajini himself. I can watch the song of Rajinikant and Ramyakrishna endless times and not get bored at all, unfortunately the only good song in the movie.

Rajnikant always remained a wannabe in Hindi films, a B-film star...he never did actually carry any movie on his own....but personally for me his best role was in CHAALBAAZ. Pankuj Parasher came up with some original casting when he had Rajnikant play a taxi driver...he fitted the role like a glove and really had some totally hilarious moments with Sridevi and Sunny Deol...

Other than that I think he is mainly gimmicky in Hindi movies (as he was wont to be in earlier Tamil films). One of the earliest Tamil film I remember of his was when he played Srividya's(or was it some other Sri) dying lover in APOORVA RAGANGAL....the role was played by Suresh Oberoi in the Hindi remake EK NAI PAHELI.....that was an understated performance and have never seen him do that again....funnily enough he has always said that his childhood hero was Shatrughan Sinha and after whom he had modelled all the 'style antics' of his.....Shotgun Sinha never underplayed his roles till Amjad Khan cast him in CHOR POLICE....that he did really well....wish he had done more of such roles...in any case coming back to Rajnikant, do hope he sobers up in his middle-age and experiments with the quieter sort....and maybe he did somewhere before, at least I am unaware and would appreciate someone pointing me to some of his 'subtler' roles...
