Bollywood - I absolutely hate the word! First of all, it sounds stupid, only indians can come up with a word that sounds so stupid. Second, it gives the impression that this is Bombay's Hollywood, which is crap as India cannot compare, in terms of glamour, riches and quality of good films. Maybe the word is appropiate for those films that are a direct copy of Hollywood (e.g. Bichoo - Leon, Kaante- RD) but I don't think 'bollywood' should be applied to all Indian films which are not hollywood copies, such as Dil Chahta Hai, Agni Varsha, Lagaan, K3G, etc. India shouldn't take pride in it's Industry by associating it with Hollywood. If India wants to develop it's industry, they should get rid of that stupid tag 'bollywood' or else they will never be taken seriously by the rest of the world.

rana, I never knew about stardust inventing the word bollywood so long ago. The word has just cropped up in the mid 90's. In the early 90's 'Bollywood' was just a buzzword and was only starting to be used. I think it was Bally Sagoo who popularised it, with his album Bollywood Flashback...somewhere I read that he was proud of it.

As I mentioned before, I have tread it in more than one magazine (other than Stardust) a few years back, where they reported/ discussed the origin of the word BOLLYWOOD. Every time, the conclusion has been that the word Bollywood first appeared in writing in Stardust, reported from their New York office.

I don't remember exactly, but I think Stardust magazine started publishing from New York (Raju Patel?? Nari Hira?? Hiba VHS??) in the early 70s. Their Hindi magazine started publishing later. I may be wrong; correct me. I definitely have been coming across the word Bollywood since early 80s and perhaps from mid 70s.

BTW, I hope you all remember a conflict between Stardust and AB, in the 80s, which carried on for over 10 yrs. Stardust never published AB's pic on their cover (and perhaps inside too) during that time. Only a few yrs back, when both needed each other, they patched up.

Rana

While the term is kinda misrepresenting Indian cinema as a whole, I can't but think that the word Bollywood really does signify its purpose. I have seen nothing but remakes, and poor adaptations of other screenplays, and films that are said to be original don't live up to expectations. Check out the weak Armaan!!!

I would like to think Bollywood as David Dhawan, Subhash Ghai & Karan Johar etc....

And would like to think Indian cinema as Mani Ratnam, Gulzar, Andoor G, Ram Gopal Varma etc...

How does Karan Johar figure among Subhash Ghai and David Dhawan. Karan Johar actually bothers to polish and make his films look good. You'd be hard pressed to find a technical mistake in K3G. That's more than I can say for SG and DD.

very true. if you don't like his end products - fine; but don't insult his technical skills, when they're very high!

BTW, another comment about starting the term Bollywood:

Long before anyone heard the term Bollywood, I'm talking of late 60s (or earlier), Film industry/ industries in UK were already referred as ----wood, to mirror Hollywood. Don't recall trhe name at the moment; anyway they still are known by that name, can anyone help??.

Name Bolywood definitely was inspired from ----wood from UK film industry.

Pinewood name must have been used at least since 1962, when the first of YOUR (James Bond) :D films came out. I wonder since when the name Pinewood has been in use?? I myself heard the name 'Pinewood' first in 1972 from my UK friend.

So, the trick of coining the name after Hollywood was not an Indian first. UK had done it at least 10 yrs before Bollywood was coined.
Perhaps, there is one big difference. I think there really is a Pinewood Studio. There is no Bollywood Studio.
