While on Farah Khan, the choreographer is doubly excited these days. Besides SRK allotting the dates for the shooting of MAIN HOON NAA, Farah has also bagged a prestigious assignment as a choreographer. The talented choreographer has been signed by Mira Nair to choreograph a 3-minute dance piece for her new film VANITY FAIR. And the actress who'll dance to Farah's tunes is none other than Reese Witherspoon.

Farah had earlier choreographed the songs of MONSOON WEDDING, but VANITY FAIR will be her first major Hollywood feature-film.

Am I the only one who thinks Farah Khan is one of the most overrated choreographers in Bollywood? What's makes it worse is that she talks and talks and talks.......

You might be RIGHT, Most likely, MY LATEST DISATISFACTION WITH HER INCOMPETENCY was CHOREOGRAPHY of ASOKA!!! Where she could not CREATE THE FEEL of the ERA!! same with ANU!! besides being GOOD MUSIC..

If u have seen..AGNI VARSHA, then u can understand, what PERIOD MUSIC/CHOREOGRAPHY, I mean!! should be!!

But she is FAMOUS, no DOUBT? esp doing BOMBAY DREAMS for REHMAN??? BTW, did she do CHAMA CHAMA, for MOULIN ROUGE too??

She is famous no doubt, but I didn't think much of the choreography of songs like Chaiya Chaiya - she made it sound as though she had done something amazing cos she got Shahrukh to dance on top of a train........

...Bhaskar, you have no idea who Farah Khan is. She is the sole reason why Bollywood is making more money ever since the "Madras wave" hit Bombay.

I know exactly who Farah Khan is. I just think that she is very overrated, when there are other talented choreographers like Ahmed Khan and Ganesh Hegde. That, however, is just my opinion.

And Dil Se, with her choreography, flopped. So how exactly is she making Bollywood money?

Farah Khan is one of my most respected personalities in Bollywood. She has radically changed the way Bollywood shoots and performs its songs. As Congress has said, otherwise we'd be stuck in the rather sorry Madras wave of choreography. Pick up any Jeetendra and Jaya Prada fare and you'll get the idea. She 'saved' countless trashy films due to the song sequences. As for Asoka, Santosh Sivan didn't get his ideas right, he requested his music director and choreographer to come up with 'contemporary' stuff that would look comfortable on MTV and Channel V. In any case the film has other problems besides that.

Regarding Dil Se, what it did earn was largely due to the songs and the song sequences. Chaiya Chaiya is probably a modern classic (though I don't really like it all that much) Pehla Nasha from JJWS is probably one of the best choreographed and filmed song of the early 90s.

If anything, I think she has been under-rated all this while and is finally getting her recognition.

Farah Khan zindabad!

What is this "Madras wave"? Is it where the hero and heroine dance in front of some backup dancers?

And, perhaps the hundreds of pots and pans in between the dancers! :D

Don't forget the flowers which spell out 'hero's name' loves 'heroine's name'. The dancers (usually hired from Hydrabad or Madras) have orange jasmine flowers in the hair for the XXL sized girls, and thick, bushy, proud moustaches for the men. Their wear colours that you cannot possibly expect celluloid to be able to capture effectively.

The South Wave (a more accurate term) continued to make its way into Hindi cinema well past Farah Khan's appearance on the scene though. Watch films like Raja Babu, Bol Radha Bol, Eena Meena Deeka, Laadla and possibly every Govinda film ever made and experience some extremely vulgar and horrendous scenes captured on film that rival films like 'A Clockwork Orange' in their ability to nauseate.

The saving graces of the day were Farah Khan's films like 1942 A Love Story, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Iruvar.

Lagaan has some of the best choreography I've seen and there isn't any song in there by her. But I do believe that she paved the way for such choreographers or else we'd be having O Re Chhori, Himmatwala ishtyle.

In this side of the globe.. people used to be crazy about Hindi films up till the 70's but after the "invasion", cinemas started shutting down and even AB lost his appeal...Until Farah Khan and SRK came.

My favourites from Farah are

- the scene in 1942 A love Story where Anil Kapoor is running after Manisha Koirala to the choir of Kuch Na Kaho

-Dil Se, Satrangi re. There is so much meaning in this song that there could be a book written on it.

-JJWS, Pehla Nasha. Nobody could have done it better..

I think I forgot to mention Yes Boss, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Aalaipayuthey. You might want to note that she conceptualizes and story boards all song projects she is given as a filmmaker. That means, she doesn't just do the 'obvious' choreography of the actors, but also of the camera and 'non-dance' movement of the actors. The title song of PBDHH is good example of this style of hers. Often, the director of the film gets the credit for the execution of the entire music video, when it belongs almost entirely to her, her troupe and the film's cinematographer

Did she work with Mani Ratnam on Alai Payuthey or by herself? The picturizations are great, and I always credited that to Ratnam and the cinematographer (P.C. Sriram, IIRC).

I think she is very overrated. I think the 2 Ganesh's - Hegde and Acharya are far better!
