Here's a little something I picked up from the Gulzar forum on Yahoogroups......Has anyone seen the encyclopedia...high time something like this was produced.. Sounds neat hanh ?

The release of Encyclopaedia of Hindi Cinema by Encyclopaedia Britannica in
last week of Feb.. Gulzar saab has played a major role and provided major
inputs in preparing the Encyclopaedia... He has also contributed with one whole
section on Music and Lyrics in Cinema and also the preface of the book...
The Encyclopaedia is the first of a trilogy of volumes by Britannica to create
original Indian content.
The volume starts with an overview of the Hindi film industry followed by its
periodisation, in-depth analysis of the genres existent within it and then
aspects that go into the creation of a Hindi film, namely music, cinematography
and more.
Highlights
a.. Produced under the editorial guidance of Gulzar, Govind Nihalani and
Saibal Chatterjee
b.. Thirty-four essays written by an array of experts who provide insights
into various aspects of the industry's internal dynamics
c.. Twenty-one milestones that bring interviews with those legendary
personalities who have influenced the dynamics of the industry
d.. Two hundred biographies that provide informative snapshots of leading
film personalities and their important films
Will have more on this soon
I have both editions. Looks solid to me from a research
and academic standpoint BUT it largely ignores current
Bollywood stars in the bio section. It's not clear if
they are simply behind or too high brow to acknowledge
people like Anil Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Amrish
Puri, Kajol... Shahrukh on the other hand has a separate entry. The situation is rather ridiculous for the time
being. The next edition should really fix this.
Edition one 1994, two 1999.
