Just for info:

Dharmendra and Hama Malini had the highest number of films shot in 70mm by mid 80s.

Sholay, Alibaba Aur Chalis Chor, The burning Train, Razia Sultan and few others...

We know how Sholay was shot, but what about the other three? Were those shot with CinemaScope lenses or shot on 65/70 or 70? Perhaps they were blowups from 35mm 'scope to 70mm.

Sholay, Shalimar, The Burning Train, Shaan, Kranti, Alibaba Aur Chalis Chor, Razia Sultan, Saagar & Karma were all shot in 70MM and with 6 track stereophonic sound. I personally have seen all of the above in 70MM and 6 track stereophonic sound and can to this day remember the great experience and grandeour of watching films in such glory and with such detailed sound coming at you from all directions.

One of my biggest grouses with Indian DVD manufacturers has always been, that none of them has bothered to use the 70MM 6 track stereophonic prints to master the DVDs of these films and to encode the 6 track sound in Dolby Digital. I for one would buy each one fo these DVDs in a jiffy if done right with Dolby Digital 5.0/5.1 sound.

The prints might have been 70mm, but not necessarily the negative. Blowups from 35mm anamorphic or the Sholay method of cropping to 2.20:1 (70mm aspect ratio) could have been done. In Hollywood, before 35/70 blowups, shooting on 65mm and printing onto 70mm was the common method of producing 70mm films. 35/70 was probably cheaper. I haven't seen any of these films besides Sholay, so I don't know if they show any of the tell tale signs of spherical non-anamorphic shooting.

I did not know that this many Indian films were shown in 70mm and with 6-track sound. It would be wonderful if they had 5.0/1 or 4.0/1 tracks. DEI authored some of those for Eros and Alibaba Aur 40 Chor for themselves, so perhaps they used 35mm prints, hence, the mono soundtracks (except Sholay).

Actually I did make a mistake with the listing of Sholay but all the other films listed by me were definately shot in 70MM.

My Around The World VHS shows:

Censor Cert:
AROUND THE WORLD
Gage: 35mm

Titles show:
Paachhi presents
India’s First
70mm Technicolor
Film
AROUND THE WORLD

The censor cert was 4:3 ratio. Why did they say 35mm??
Is each and every film print subjected to Censors??

THE HERO:

Today they showed a few promotional clips/ trailors on TV. If the movie is even 10% as good as the clips, it will be a super hit. The clips were that good.

no way buddy! the movies' trailors have been bogus!which clips do you see + where?

the hero will 100% copy kaante's performance - big intial, but quick, quick decline...

it can't recover 53CR from india, and it def will not do well overseas - witness gadar's perf.....flop flop and even more flop...

:p

The trilors were on CITY TV bet 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM on Sat. I'm sure they will be showing them again in their progrm this morning at 10:00 - 11:00 AM.

Dograk, you said, "the movies' trailors have been bogus".
That's why I said if the movie is even 10% as good as the trailor, it will be a hit. I liked the James Bond style action trailor.

oh yaar, you could've just seen them from indiafm - all of the trailors, plus you wouldn't have to put up with those fat slobs...

anways, only reason i believe it'll flop - gadar was mega successful because it appealed to the common man - it had a rustic appeal. now why do you think a pindu would want to see some movie that's BASE is techincal effects- i forsee another kaante... (and it's appeal is def. not the music!)...

for that matter, the techincal effects are outright terrible in some situations - watch the one where the "nuclear base" blows up - looks like a flash cartoon!

I agree with DOGRA, Both GADAR and LAGAAN, had advantage of RUSTIC APPEAL, a common man, younger, older, trying to identify with!!That went in favour a BIG TIME!!

I saw this statement on a review on startrek, dvd:

At the time of its release, some 70mm blow up prints were made for premier engagements and these featured the 6 channel magnetic sound format. Decades later, fashioned into a new 5.1 Dolby Digital mix, what we have is likely very close to what audiences heard in 1986.

So, 70mm, blow up prints are factual..

Any links to theatres where The Hero is being shown??

Which theatres are screening with proper Audio?? Sunny Deol being involved, I guess this movie has killer DTS-ES audio. I hope the distributors and exhibitors collaborate to match the screening print with theatre capability. No point in sending a DTS-ES print and theatre having the state of the art Dolby Digital. Same way, no point in theatre gettiong a Dolby Digital print and theatre having DTS only. Both cases, you get Back-up analog mono audio only.

It is not un-common for Toronto Cinesphere I-Max screenings in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of the initial release and missing out in the first week. Any news??

God forbid, they don't screen from a DVD instead.
