1) Compared picture in all three DVDs with my old VHS copies. My VHS copies were all 4:3. Karma and Karz DVD pic, not only had extra pic on the sides, it also had extra pic at the top and bottom. This shows that the old VHS copies contained only the center portion of the screen (left, right, top and bottom all were cropped). I guess they had to do this to make the shown objects big for the quality they used to give in VHS.

How much picture is shown on top and bottom? Is it a lot or just a sliver? These films must have been shot anamorphically, being from the 80s. Even for anamorphic films, two different transfers won't necessarily share the same top and bottom framelines, though they will be close.

3) All three DVDs and I think it applies to all S.Ghai Shemaroo DVDs is that the songs are recorded again on the disc. This allows Songs only playback but it does waste disc space. If one wants songs playback only, it can easily be programmed on the DVD player. Why waste disc space for this purpose? This disc space could be used to give higher bit rates.

The screenshots seem to indicate that bitrate is the least of the problems with these discs! :)

Dragun, I have seen the VHS tapes that Rana has 9esp Karz and Hero). I will concur with him abt Shemaroo having preserved the picture information at the sides, as well as the edges.
I will give you a few examples :-
1.) Take the Opening credits of Karz and Hero

You cant read the titles on the VHS tape. The DVD, on the other hand has more information on the sides, and the titles are visible.

2.) However I will differ from Rana, in the fact that the movies are still cropped (even though they show more information). The fact is revelaed in the opening sequence of Karz.. when Raj Kiran is getting killed by Simmi. You can clearly see Raj Kiran's face cut out from the main frame (on the sides).

I wish these guys had , at least, made these DVDs widescreen anamorphic !

Karz, Hero & Karma... 3 different films...and you never get bored of them. I think today's generation will never know what kinda excitement we had in those days when these films were released. Truely amazing, when Jackie Shroff makes an entry in Hero...
I am happy I had a chance to see these films ( along with Meri Jung and Ram Lakhan)... before the quality of his films went to the dogs.
Unless SG redeems himself, he will soon be forgotten .. he should start making films that represent his style...(a la Karz, Hero , etc.) and not crappy Carbon copies of YR films !

Is there any chance he is releasing an action flick in the near future ?

DragunR2, you realize, what I'm saying is that in all three cases, VHS picture area was a lot smaller. DVDs show more picture than my VHS, on all 4 sides.
