there's a difference between vertical squeeze and anamorphic.. the Vertical squeeze is for 4:3 sets that will allow you to play your dvd in anamorphic mode, and will show up on the TV letterboxed, but with a lesser loss of resolution.
Proper anamorphic viewing requires a 16:9 set.

Actually there is no difference in how a 4:3 TV or a 16:9 TV display an anamorphic DVD. Both televisions simply do a vertical squeeze to display the correct aspect ratio. So the reality is that 16:9 televisions do not hold any advantage over 4:3 televisions that have the vertical squeeze/wide/anamorphic mode, in respect to displaying anamorphic DVDs. There are ofcourse other advantages of a 16:9 television which are not related to the issue here though. I personally prefer a 16:9 television and have had one for almost 6 yrs now.

Interesting article on HDTV:
http://money.cnn.com/2003/02/24/technol ... /index.htm

A few excerpts:

HDTV is, quite simply, the most stunning TV picture you've ever seen. It has five times the resolution of standard screens. The picture is so clear it's like looking out a highly polished window -- you may actually smell the honeysuckle in the field. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but you get my point.

---even if you can't get HDTV signals, watching DVDs is still a treat. You'll notice details you would never see on your regular analog set.

What's in your wallet? You can jump on the HD bandwagon with a 27-inch screen for as little as $700. But you really need at least 30 inches to get the full HDTV experience, so figure on paying at least $1,200. Flat-panel TVs run much higher -- from $5,000 to $18,000 and above.

HDTV sets come in a confusing array of formats, each with strengths and weaknesses. For starters, there are direct-view traditional CRT (cathode ray tube) HDTV sets that look just like the ones you have now.
---CRT sets have the sharpest pictures and the lowest prices ---

What are you plugging in? This is a small detail but an important one. Some models, especially flat-panel sets, skimp on inputs. Ideally, you want two sets of component video inputs. If you plan to hook up a VCR, make sure the set has an S-Video jack. And if you want to connect a digital video camera, choose a set with a FireWire (or 1394) port.

Six winners
Here's a selection of topnotch HDTVs.

TV Price Comments
Zenith 32-inch C32V23 $1,500 An excellent entry-level set

Hitachi 51-inch UltraVision $2,700 Bulky but what a picture!

Samsung 50-inch HLM507W $4,000 Amazing clarity

Sony 60-inch Grand Vega KF-60DX100 $6,000 Six-speaker sound

Sharp Aquos 37-inch LCD $9,000 Great design, all the right inputs

Pioneer 50-inch Elite Purevision Monitor $17,500 Pricey but beautiful

I'm not assuming. I know it. Haven't you heard a short story about every one being worth millions of dollars.
HDTV costs only $700, i.e. if you already don't have better. A PC monitor is as good or better than HDTV.
