i dont think RUN songs have subs, or ALAI PAAYUTHE (maybe that one does) but I remember seeing subs for the songs of KANDUKONDIAN KANDUKONDIAN and then not for DUM DUM DUM or some such, certainly not for KANNATHIL MUTHAMITAL, hence the generalisation (not totally correct i know)....

Run and Alai Payuthey did have subtitles on the songs. The earliest Ayngaran disc I've seen with subs on the songs is Thillana Mohanambal, which has some of the worst subs I've seen for both songs and dialogue.

And you are probably right...like i said I had seen the subs for KANDUKONDIAN....and was impressed with the thoughts of Vairamuthu the lyricist (inspite of the pathetic quality of the subs), and was peeved when the songs of KM did not have subs....and i believe the lyricist was the same....i dont understand/speak Tamil, but would like to follow everything on screen...hence my being pissed off when DVD makers DECIDE what the audience needs or not......

I saw both KanduKondein... and Kannathil Muthamittal recently. And both of them didn't have subtitles for the songs. That is extremely irrititating when you don't know the language. I also saw Minnale, Sethu and Alai Payuthe and they had subtitles for the songs. One of the songs in Minnale had such horrible subtitles, it made me cringe as it was so crude.

What I have done since is gone to Subhash World to get the translations. It is not the same as understanding while watching the movie.

Kandukondain by Ayngaran DOES NOT have subs on the songs, which really affects the movie in a bad way. The songs are a very vital part of the film. In any case, considering how horrible their subs were for the rest of the film, perhaps they were doing us a favor?

You guys need to pick up 'Iruvar' ASAP. There are some gorgeous close up shots of Ash and Tabu - the same kind of shots that Rajiv Menon attempted in KK, only these are more aesthetic. One song is in black and white shot in the old Tamil film tradition and it features Madhu from 'Roja'.

Is it a pan and scan transfer or open matte?

Dragun, commercial Indian films are shot using the Cinemascope process (except the occasional Rajiv Rai film in Technovision). There is no matte to speak of.

Again, my guess is this a 1.85 film not a scope one, therefore open matte is possible.

OK, so I sat through a lot of 'Iruvar' last night before watching 'The Nanny' on Lifetime. It really helps to speak Tamil to appreciate this film, unfortunately. I do, so it was startling to see to what lengths Mani Ratnam has researched the old Tamil movie industry and political connections to the industry before making this film. This is very markedly a story about Karunanidhi (former Tamil Nadu CM), Jayalalitha (current CM) and MGR (former, now late, CM).

Aishwarya Rai plays two roles, one of a village belle who is packed of in an arranged marriage, and later she also plays cabaret dancer and aspiring actress Kalpana, who is supposed to be Jayalalitha. Mani Ratnam has played all the characters in such a way that it really looks like the MGR-Karunanidhi scenario. The only way he changes it is by killing off Aishwarya's second role Kalpana in a car accident.

Tabu looks so young and fresh in this film. As does Gowthami, a very underrated Tamil actress. Revathi (from 'Anjali') plays a side role too. I think that from a hindi speakers' perspective the movie may not hold much weight storywise, but as an art film theres a lot for everyone to appreciate. Definitely Mani Ratnam's most underrated work after 'Pallavi Anu Pallavi' (has anyone seen this movie? Its truly a work of genius).

Ok Guys - IRUVAR's aspect ratio is not 1.85:1. It was shot deliberately as a pan-and-scan movie.

"Pan and Scan" is a term used to refer to the process by which a widescreen film is cropped to 4:3. It doesn't refer to a filming process and it doesn't apply to open matte presentations. Thiruma, are you saying it was originally shot for 1.33:1?

DragunR2 - Yes, it was shot in the 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Mani Rathnam even considered having part of the movie in B&W and part in color and that too in "diff" kinds of color to show the progress in the tamil film industry from B&W -> Color over the years.
