has anyone watched "such a long journey" starring roshan seth, nasseruddin shah, and om puri? it's based on the rohinton mistry book of the same name. it's supposed to be quite good (i'm sure the acting is).

Yup seen it....its a pretty nice movie...the interpretation by the director Gunnarsson (i think) is decent. The book is certainly much better....Roshan Seth excels....Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah have small roles which could have been bigger....certainly worth a watch.

anyone have any can't-miss indian novel suggestions?

Apart from the other recommendations you already have I think you should also catch Shashi Tharoor's 'The Great Indian Novel', Amitav Ghosh's 'The Circle of Reason', Upamanyu Chatterjee's 'English, August' and ofcourse Vikram Seth's 'Beastly Tales from here and There', which though a poem collection is simply delicious and shows why he's such a master. They are all very very decent books.

Theon were you looking for "Indian" novels written by Indians or does that also include novels written by "Indian-born/domiciled/or origin" writers ?
If thats the case then you have the stuff Aarkayne presented. But please be forewarned, not all of them reflect "Indian society or its problems"...

I can give you some more recomendations....
You should not the novels by Munshi Premchand... Just as I gave you some recos reflecting a Bengali's (Satyajit Ray) and a Tamilian's (R.K.Narayan) view point of Indian society, Premchand's novels gives us a description of Northern Indian society, during the times of the British.

A modern Indian author whom you should be looking for are the novels by Amrita Pritam.. ( a film is being made based on her novel, Pinjar (which means Skeleton) ).

So there you have a buffet of selections.... from contemprorary to classics ! Happy reading :)
