HBO is showing "City of Joy" in HD. The film costars Om Puri
and Shabana Azmi (and Ayesha Dharkar). First time Indian
stars are on TV in HD, I think. The transfer is pretty good.

This isn't the first time. I've seen this film on HBO about 10 to 15 times. Its about a low caste family from Bihar that move to Kolkatta for a better life, and experience a doctor from Dallas and an Englishwoman trying to open a clinic and opportunities for the poor. Its a GREAT film, you really should watch it.

Dominique Lapierre

Of cos you should know him from his other books

Freedom at Midnight , O Jerusalem and Is Paris burning (with Larry Collins)!

Shaeed-e-Mohabbat was inspired from an incident in their book Freedom at Midnight (in verbatim of cos). Its crude adaptation was the (in)famous Gadar (depends on where u are from)

English or regional languages ?

I will suggest R.K.Narayan and Satyajit Ray's novels for two different cultural depictions of India... (Malgudi and Feluda respectively)...
These novels are relatively light, in the sense that they dont dwell on philisophy and rather depend on very realistic and simple scenarios.

I dunno if you can get the Feluda novels here in Canada !

Theon... Dragun is right...

These novels are worth it. If you know anyone in India, ask him /her to send these novels to ya..

The Feluda Novels

The Malgudi Days Novels

If you want some other stuff here you go... This gives u an idea abt British India Bengal.. (This was also serialized on Doordarshan, in the late 1980s')... Shei Somoy (Those Days)..

thanks again sknath.

has anyone watched "such a long journey" starring roshan seth, nasseruddin shah, and om puri? it's based on the rohinton mistry book of the same name. it's supposed to be quite good (i'm sure the acting is).

and did anyone notice arundhati roy in "aapko pehle bhi kahin dekha hai"? she's the booker prize winning author of "the god of small things"
