For Toronto:

Which theatre is preferrable??

Albion Cinemas screens are bigger, but the sound had problems when I saw a movie there a few months back. Sound was screeching crackling a lot. Moreover, East theatre has a 1.85:1 screen and the west theatre has a 2.35:1 screen. 2.35:1 screen is not necessarily bigger as the 1.85:1 screen has more in height. Projection was a bit dark too.

Woodside screens are quite a bit smaller but the projection AR is correct for both 2.35:1 and 1.85:1. I never had problem with the audio. 2 - 3 weeks back, I saw Dil Ka Rishta in theatre #2 and I did feel some bass. None of the Albion or Woodside theatres have DD or DTS, the audio in theare #2 Woodside was good enough.

What do you think of the present state of Albion and Woodside theatres?? Which one is preferrable?? I personally would prefer Albion if they have fixed the projection and audio problems. Otherwise it's Woodside.

Thanks.

I prefer a 13 inch TV in my room to any of those cinemas. At least they upgraded the screens, I remember when i could see holes in them. I go to Albion more often only because it's closer to by siblings' place in Mississauga. I'll go to Woodside when that's the only place to catch the movie. If you check on filmcan.ca and click on Toronto, sometimes the mainstream theaters are showing movies. I saw Shakti and Devdas this way, and results were far superior.

Thanks Bludhound. Albion Cinemas used to have better sound some time ago. It may not be DD or DTS or Dolby surround, bi\ut at least there was no crackling or hiss. Last few movies that I saw at Albion had terrible audio as if something has broken down. Bludhound, when did you see a movie at Albion last? mine was 4 months ago. I was wondering if they have fixed the audio problems? Of the Albion and Woodside, I prefer Albion, because of its larger screen, but only if the audio is normal. Otherwise I prefer Woodside even if its screens are aprox half the size.

i saw two movies at Albion recently. First was Kaante back in december, and that seemed like it was mono sound - there was no sound coming from the side or back... And there was some hisses aswell.

I saw Baaz last weekend, and I think the movie was in atleast Dolby Surround. I felt bass and there was some stereo separation during the songs and action scenes. There was also some sound coming from the back. And there was no cracks or hisses. Perhaps it was actually in DTS (cause I heard that they are equipped).

Of course the best indian movie theatrical experience for me, was in AMC last weekend for Khushi. The screen was kinda small, but the sound was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!!

Thanks Darius25.

Its good to know, they still show Indian movies in main stream theatres. Looks like it is too late now. Khushi doesn't seem to be running now. I usually check http://www.cinemaclock.com/
site for movie listings in main stream theatres. I didn't find that listing there. Any chance, Khushi or any other Indian movie running in the main stream theatres in Toronto??

BTW, Guru is still running in its 7th week in Toronto (also in Vancouver) and starting in Montreal today. Perhaps, it will make it to Ottawa in 2 - 3 weeks or so.

Theon, Khushi was playing last weekend at AMC Kennedy Commons. I saw the poster 2 weeks ago when i went to see The Guru there (in the theatre's largest cinema, with a sold-out mainly white audience).

of course i was pissed last week when i found out that Khushi was playing in their smallest cinema. Still, the print was pretty good looking and the sound was amazing!!!!!!

Rarely do we find an Indian movie playing in a good theatre. When they are screened in the main stream theatres, many of us find it too late. I and many others will appreciate a lot, a post about mainstream screenings of Indian films, in time.

Thanks.

darius, darius, darius...you knew of a hindi movie playing at a major theatre in TO (which doesn't happen very much) and didn't inform your friends at zulm.net? :nervous:

I recommend Maveli Twin Cinemas in NY. They play Hindi, Tamil, and malu movies. They have 2 screens with DTS and DD. It's very clean and great service.

A big thumbs down for Eagle Theater in NY. The picture is passable, but the sound is absolutely horrible. And they got the most uncomfortable seats.

Loews State Theaters in Time Square is an excellent place to watch movies. All screens are equipped with SDDS and DD. Great sound! Great picture!
