So there I was thinking this Shemaroo company has rights to some Ghai films and that's it, and maybe a couple of others. I went to my local video store and they just had a shipment in of tons of movies and some VERY PROMINENT ones are on the Shemaroo label and I'm not just talking about films by Ghai, they had B.R. Chopra's Waqt, Chupke Chupke, and other titles as well as the Ghai titles Hero, Saudagar. Inside the Saudagar DVD I rented they claim to have DVDs out (on a little booklet) as varied as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, a lot of Mukta Arts films like Trimurti, Rahul, Deewangee, Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, and Sangam.

Correct me if I'm wrong or just don't get this but aren't the rights of some of these movies with other companies. Namely Yashraj has released the Chopra DVDs as well as the R.K. Banner films (crap quality but I thought they had the rights). Similarly whats the deal with Shemaroo having the rights to Hera Pheri which I thought Videosound released, HDDCS was a Spark release as was Deewangee. Are Shemaroo just grabbing at will and releasing these films. Of course all the power to them, especially if they can do a better job but aren't some legalities involved here. If that's not the case then why didn't the now extinct great DEI just release at will?

BTW as for the Saudagar DVD it has an excellent picture, very vibrant and clear, shame the same can't be said of the sound though which isn't overly distracting but not that great (I think its just Dolby Digital 2.0 or something if that means anything to anyone here). While I am impressed with the picture quality it still isn't GREAT. But it is better than Eros and VS in my opinion, maybe they will get better.

The website for shemaroo is http://www.shemaroo.com and right now they only ship within India (maybe they only have India rights and these DVDs are somehow getting to North America....I'm clueless on these matters but wouldn't they have to encode for a different region?) :keh:

They only have rights for India...so don't confuse the North America dvds with them...and on the subject of dvd region coding, since when Hindi films started having region coding? Of course Lagaan & Mission Kashmir not included....

Do the Shemaroo discs have region coding? I've only seen Pakeezah which is region free. And why are they NTSC if they are meant for India? Can people in India play these discs or are these discs secretly made for people in the West?

Shemaroo site lists some 70 or so DVDs all together.

Some of them are officially distributed, perhaps legally, by some one in NY/ NJ.

Some are pirated and are exact replicas of Indian Shemaroo DVDs. These sell dirt cheap by the tons.

Some are 100% fake and nothing to do with Indian Shemaroo DVDs and in most cases Shemaroo didn't even release those DVDs in India.

It is a safe bet that you'll get the original Shemaroo DVD or its exact replica if that title is released by them in India. If they didn't release a title in India, then it just has a fake Shemaroo name.

BTW Khaira, where can we shop for these Shemaroo titles??

I'm in B.C., Canada and saw the Shemaroo titles here in Surrey at a local video store.

I know indiaweekly has Saudagar, Ganga Ki Saugandh and some more Shemaroo titles and they ship everywhere. That's the best place to go. Indiaplaza has some Shemaroo titles too like Ghai's Hero. So unless your local video store will sell it I guess these are the two places to go.

Personally I buy mostly from indiaweekly, if you order two or three DVDs it's cheaper even with shipping than any local video store, and I know the local video store also buys from Indiaweekly but they buy in bulk and probably get a cheaper deal.

long live shemaroo! yashraj dvds suck :bash:

i personally would not buy anything from North-America, it appears to be that ALL DVDs available here are replicated. Recently, i bought Benaam Baadshah DVD, and before opening it, i can see the difference between DVDs (#15 to be exact) that i bought directly from shemaroo (india) and this one from the states.

Quality wise, it may not differ, but have a doubt of it being replicated and/or on cheap media causing freezing problems.

for the wise-individuals who may want to know the reasons behind all my assumptions:
* shrink wrapper is different than what used by shemaroo india
* marketed by bombay music, NY (definitely not imported)
* 550 iNR (approx. U$11.50) being sold for U$12.99 @ IW [Reminds me of (infamous) SKY DVDs, where price begins at 12.99 and drops to $5.99]

i am not saying these Bombay Music DVDs are from the same pipe as SKY DVDs, But..

Haven't seen Yaadein yet but they have it advertised on the Saudagar DVD and in that booklet in the Shemaroo DVD of Saudagar. I saw Hero and I'm sure all the others will follow from Ghai: Karma, Karz, and Yaadein. I think there are 10 in all from Ghai.

Mostly, the Shemaroo DVDs that are listed on the net, ie at IW, Nehaflix or IP etc are genuinely distributed (may be manufactured outside of India under license), I think, with the blessings of Shemasroo. These are roughly $10 - $13 US. The biggest listing of such DVDs is at Jolly's site (UK).

There also are some titles that obviously are replicated ones and sell for roughly $7 - $13 (Cdn) range. These are, for example, Bobby, SSS, Awara, Shri 420, Mughleazam, Paakeeza, Prem Rog etc. I had bought replicated Mughleazam for $12 (Cdn) about 8 months back and later it was sold for as low as $7 (Cdn). The same shop told me two weeks ago, they got the official version now and of course the price was much higher ($15 - $22 Cdn). Disc encoding was exacly the same though. As the official versions appear, replicated ones disappear.

If a title rights are with YRF or some other company that is strict about it, that Shemaroo title will not be available among Genuine Shemaroos but its replicated versions may become or are already available at those shops that sell Pirates.

Its Asian Video on Scott Road. They are opposite Kamal's video and have a second location on 76 and Scott Road (in that plaza beneath the restaurant "Trishna"; that's the location where I saw the Hero and Saudagar DVDs. Didn't ask about the price though, just rented the Saudagar one.
