I suppose it depends on the audience. Among foreign film buffs in the US, directors like Fellini, Kurosawa, Eisenstein, and Godard are fairly popular, and I imagine that is why they are so well represented in the Criterion Collection. Aside from Ray's films, Indian arthouse films can't be very well known in among American cinephiles.
