It has been a tough walk for the industry, and more specifically David Dhawan. Mukta Arts hasn´t been so lucky itself.

Their next joint venture Ek Aur Ek Gyarah starring Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, Nandini Singh and Amrita Arora is a mix of action and comedy. The pair of Sanjay Dutt and Govinda have been very lucky for each other in past hits like Jodi No. 1 and Haseena Maan Jayegi.

The movie has a tentative release date for end of April 11th, with its music (Shankar Ehsaan Loy, already creating ripples) releasing on February 12th. The music of the movie has already fetched 2 cr for Mr. Ghai. The latest is that he plans on distributing the movie himself.

Mr. Ghai wants 2.5 cr /territory for the movie and feels that if he doesn´t get the quoted price it is better to distribute the movie himself.

What exactly does it mean that he's going to "distribute it himself"?

though not an expert what this would mean is that as a producer, instead of 'selling' the rights to a distributor who in turn wouldl 'rent' exhibition halls in the territories over which he would have hadrights and recover his investment thus....ghai will himself be making those extra copies and prints and negotiating with theatre owners to exhibit the movie in each territory he chooses....i think the onus of publicising also would fall on him etc.....i am sure there's someone else here who understands the mechanism of distributing much better than the feeble attempt i have just made !! :-(

Aarkayne you are right.... a distributor is what you would call a "beech-wala" (middleman). If Ghai had sold this to the distributors he need not have worried if the film was flop or a hit, cos the distributors would have paid him upfront for the movie. Whatever loss or profit the movie made, would be solely the responsibility of the distributor. Now that the distributor is gone, Ghai is taking a gamble. If the film is a hit.. all the profit is his... and conversely if its a flop, he loses his money ! But gross... Subhas Ghai and letting a director like David Dhawan direct a film

I like the idea of the producers or the production houses distributing their films by themselves in all mediums. Only then can we expect Director's cut in the released film prints, DVDs and VHS.

Also, when their own profits are at stake, they will make a good product.

Even if Mr. Ghai himself distributes this movie or not, I hope it's not just another JN1 or HMJ with mindless comedy and the heroines running around Switzerland and Goa singing "Wot is Mobile Number?"

Looks like Ghai is going to lose some money. 2.5 crores for a Govinda-Sanju movie is far to high.

here's some more explanation on the trade of film selling and promoting....i quote from the article (link to which is later below)

"Figures are important because in the film trade a hit is determined not by how much the producer recovers but the ratio at which a film is sold. “So if a film sells for Rs 2 crore per territory and then runs up an additional Rs 50-75 lakh on print, publicity and the distributors’ commission, but goes on to cover its cost and brings in a small overfow, it is a semi-hit or a coverage film. If the profit margin is bigger, the film is a hit. Should the producer double his investment,it is a superhit and if he triples it, the film is an A plus, a super-duper hit,” explains trade analyst Amod Mehra."
