Now imagine if it was a David Dhawan film being shown...most of the audience would walk away!

That's true! I don't understand how someone like David Dhawan can become a director. Look at the crap he makes!

I think that the South films cater to an audience that's more literate than the Hindi film audience, and this reflects on the films being made. Some of the films released last year were VERY embarrassing, and I couldn't think of things to recommend for a Western audience.

Look at the big hits we have, and tell me which ones you'd actually like to show to one of your friends? KKHH went down well with many non-Indians I knew, as well as in the UK. But the films are all Hollywood rip-off's, Hindi and Tamil remakes, and stupid love stories. I don't understand why our films have to be so bad!

The acting in these films are horrible as well! And so is this music! Having three films released in one week makes it even worse. I just think the industry needs to work better. All these delayed films, films with bad plots, and just plain bad films are mostly being released now.

We need to make a plan!

Another problem with the mainstrean 'bollywood' films is the humour isn't very funny any more, it's just silly. The things India laughs at, I think the rest of the world would find either silly or unfunny, I myself as well as many people I know find most of the time, the humour just not funny enough.

The humor is usually idiotic, but there used to be humor in films that depend on knowing the language somewhat, like Chupke Chupke. We neither see humor like in that film, or the universal yet sophisticated (and unique for Indian films) humor like in Chhoti Si Baat. I did like the Vivek comedy track in Run. You don't need to know Tamil to laugh at his predicament!

Kishi, the ubiquitous 'south more literate' thing is quite a sweeping statement with no conclusive evidence. Johnny Lever (who is a South Indian) and Govinda are quite obviously remnants of the last great South Wave in Hindi movies. Prior to those dumbass Jeetendra and (southern belle) Jaya Prada starrers, Hindi cinema had seen better days. David Dhawan too, largely imitates south films. Come on, I live in Singapore and am exposed to Tamil films all the time on TV. Don't tell me they are any better. They started the whole Not Funny Movement with their Senthil and Goundamini geniuses.

I think Senthil and Goundamani were popular among rural audiences rather than those in the major cities like Chennai. They were a horribly irritating duo and were to Tamil films what Jagdeep was to Hindi films.

I thought Andaz Apna Apna had pretty sophisticated humor in it at times. Not every part was good, but there was a lot of brilliant stuff in it. More so than a lot of Indian comedies.

Darius, half of your best of Hong Kong list consists of well-executed commercial action flicks and the other half lists probably the only films from Hong Kong worth talking about. When I say Kung Fu, I mean action flicks :D Of course, they have their fair share of good films - but probably no more than India. Anyway, whats with the squeaky voices their starlets have (I guess they can't get past the trauma they had while filming Sex and Zen VIIII) ...Oh and the subtitles...the should send their films to NFDC to do the subtitling - for a fee of course. Till China comes up with an English programme in schools undoubtedly... :p

absolutely right.....'Andaz Apna Apna' was in the nineties what 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' was in the eighties.....a comedy worth all the money put into it and a definitive classic...
