Bollywood is rich now and a multi million dollar lawsuit needs to be filed against it by hollywood and music industries as bollywood produces less than 10% original material, the rest is all stolen.

And a certain Gupta...

Who wants to be the first to send copies of Kaante to Ringo Lam, Quentin Tarantino, Bryan Singer, and Michael Mann?

Next on the chopping block, Nadeem-Shravan and Anu Malik.

I think this is the biggest Joke of 2003. Maybe Universal should dig up Bappi Lahiri's track listings...and file a counter suit against him. It is really shameful ....indeed

On a sidenote... It is also gratifying that Devdas will not feature in the Oscars... Saves us from a major embaressment !

The american laws are all screwed up, if these days someone looks at u in a bad way u can sue them.
Lawyers have made it into a game, offering service for free and only charging if they win ur claim. :ffs:

There's a difference between the their 'stealing' and our 'stealing'. The only reason why Hollywood (or their music business counterpart) doesn't take legal action against Indians is that the Indians never make all that much money out of their plagiarisations. It wouldn't be worth the trouble. If it was, trust me - they'd be on it. On the other hand, when an album sells 600,000 copies internationally in dollars, anyone who didn't get paid will sit up and take notice. In fact, in this case, Dr. Dre had a lot of cheek to actually sample the original track without change and not even credit the composer. Indian composers lift tunes, not put in the actual original track into their albums wholesale.

Indian musicians put in their own lyrics of course, but the background or foreground music is completely stolen and put in as it is. Copyright laws protect the whole of that.
For example there are numerous bollywood movies that have inserted the T2 music theme into indian films, it doesnt really go with the scene yet they still put it in, unedited.
Bollywood has highly ripped of Enigma's music into songs and background music for movies, those frenchies can file a major lawsuit.

Victory for India, says Bappi Lahiri

By: Mayank Shekhar
February 7,2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALMOST FAMOUS: Bappi Lahiri

Bappi Lahiri sounded jububilant fresh from his victory in the legal case against hip-hop producer Dr Dre and record labels of the Universal Group on the inclusion of his name in the credit list of the album Truthfully Speaking by Truth Hurts.

Speaking from Los Angeles where he is presently stationed, the composer gave his first reactions after winning a favourable judgement from a LA federal court.

Excerpts from the interview:

What was your first reaction after having won the case?

My stand is that India and Indian musicians must be recognised all over the world. Such a victory is a first for this nation. And this is not Bappi Lahiri’s victory alone.

What is the repercussion of the judgement?

The outcome is that the album will have my name in the credits for the song (Addictive, which has the track Kaliyon ka chaman lifted from Lahiri’s ’80s composition for a film Jyoti).

Will the album credit Lata Mangeshkar as well?

The composition is mine and surprisingly my name was not there at all. This is a victory for India. The news has reached all over the place and played in CNN headlines here as well.

Did you also demand a monetary compensation in terms of punitive damages from the American defendants?

No. My fight was over my name.

Did you expect a forgotten song that you composed years ago to generate such hype many years later?

It is a typical Indian song that we all should feel proud of.

In the past, tracks in India have been blatantly copied from western tunes. But those original performers haven’t been credited either.

Great Indian composers from Shankar Jaikishen to RD Burman have lifted tunes from the west. But they have maintained their original styles.

My case in the American court was not against lifting a tune, but a track. If I use a Madonna song with her voice withour giving her any credit and introduce a track of my own, that clearly cannot be considered acceptable.

What are you doing in Los Angeles?

I am working on two international projects that involves big stars. I will talk about the projects when I return to Mumbai in a fortnight.

Are these collaborations with international artistes that you’re working on?

No. It is fusion, like the version of Kaliyon ka chaman that took the west by storm and had producers approach me to repeat its success.
