Guru grabs big bucks

Arthur J Pais | February 03, 2003 18:58 IST

Never mind the critics who complained The Guru failed to offer nirvana. Audiences in 10 North Ameri

can cities roared with laughter, spending about $640,000 in three days on the movie.

It had a far higher per screen average than most other films in release.

If the momentum holds, the sex comedy could become a modest hit. Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding which, like The Guru was also released by Universal Pictures and grossed about $13 million in North America, is clearly the movie it will have to surpass at the box-office.

At least one reviewer hopes for big numbers for the movie. 'If I were a swami, I'd predict The Guru will be the big hit of 2003,' declared Daphne Gordon in the Toronto Star.

The Guru did not exactly curry favors with many critics. 'Omm-barassing,' declared People magazine.

Reading the above report, I wanted to find out if Guru is playing locally. Cinema Clock gives listings for Canadian cities.

Didn't find it running in Ottawa, but the movie is running in 4 theatres in Toronto. In its 5th week in Toronto it is running 22 shows daily. It must be doing well.

As Arsh said above, it is a limited release and should be showing in smaller centres later. I noticed at the movie home site that the movie was released theatrically 4 - 5 months back.

Looks like either people love it or hate it.

Reviews for The GURU at Rotten tomatoes

I can't seem to find this playing anywhere in Houston! My friend saw the preview and said it looked very cheesy.

It is currently in limited release in about three theaters in Dallas.

"The Guru" has been trashed by some of the major critics from Hollywood.

The Hollywood critics are mad because Bollywood is making it's way into the mainstream, and they feel threatened. Well all I can say is eat your heart out and bite me, cause we're coming whether you like it or love it!

Lagaan got 94% good reviews on rottentomatoes.com (50 good reviews, 3 bad ones) and Monsoon Wedding got 94% good reviews (92 good, 8 bad), so critics aren't against Bollywood. The Guru got 61% good reviews (30 good, 19 bad), which isn't horrible, but not very good either. And I thought you said that Bollywood couldn't go global?

??? :)

Lagaan a 100% Bollywood film, Monsoon Wedding non-Bollywood film and similar stuff with The Guru..

Apparently, It will take some time before some other films can replicate the success of Lagaan or even Asoka.

Lets hope Roland Joffe's film can make a difference. It will have a true "non-desi" handling a "desi" subject. Unlike aplogetics like Mira Nair & Deepa Mehta (the apologists), Roland Joffe's film will be more hard hitting rather than self-pitying etc. !

Has anyone here seen The Guru yet? Is it good, bad, ugly?

FYI, there is a pirate that has a red "special edition" banner at the top. They even put a Universal logo on the back to try to make it look official!

Bollywood can go global, only with a few films though. And when Bollywood can go global, is probably in two or three years. Right now is not the best time!
