Ash no match for Bipasha
Aishwarya Rai's first production Dil Ka Rishta opened to a disappointing response. Even Rai's presence couldn't help this predictable fare.
On the other hand, Jism met with a decent response. Whether it will become a huge success and strengthen Bipasha Basu's position in the industry remains to be seen.

Note: Films are ranked on the basis of their performance at the box office every week. Though a film may be declared a flop, it may have performed better than other films that particular week.

Shows that good films always win, and that the most wanted actress can't always give a definite success! Go Bipasha!

No! Don´t expect another surprise hit from the Bhatt-Basu combination. However, do expect a success. And for an industry as drought stricken as ours, just a non-flop is welcome. Touted as the first hit of this year, the very small budgeted erotic thriller is the talk of town because of Bipasha Basu´s risqué performance. The film hasn´t found the flavor of universal appeal, especially among critics who are divided about the film, and its performance at the box office. The weekend was also one of the biggest media driven heroine clashes in recent times. Not for a while have the heroines been the talk of clashing as the box office (in contrast to the many Aamir vs. Sunny that we have seen in the past). Obviously, Aishwarya Rai, whose home production Dil Ka Rishta released this weekend, and Bipasha Basu are heroines worthy of note. After all, when Karisma Kapoor´s Shakti (which incidentally was completely overdriven by a special appearance courtesy of the beauty queen Ms. Rai), clashed with Bipasha Basu´s Gunaah there were no talks of the sort. Not a single draw was made barring the fact that both, once again were heroine based roles.

While both Gunaah and Shakti flopped, the scenario will be quite different this time around. It´s quite obvious that Dil Ka Rishta will not do well at the box office, barring Mumbai. It is also obvious that Jism will not repeat the success of Raaz, but will be a success in a few places. Still, the cold wave continues to play havoc with film collections for the 20th day in half of India, but even still there is some happy news as far as the new releases are concerned. It was build up as a showdown between two beauties Aishwarya and Bipasha and everyone was assuming that Dil Ka Rishta would have a cake walk over Jism, especially as the music of DKR was at the peak of its publicity. It doesn´t look like it! This too affects maestro´s Nadeem-Shravan, who up to now have been gloating about their undeserved success. Not only has the music dissapointed (After being touted as their best), it has not helped the film in garnering an initial at all!

Film
Dil Ka Rishta
Starring
Aishwarya Rai, Arjun Rampal, Rakhee, Paresh Rawal, Isha Koppikar, Tiku Talsania, Priyanshu Chatterjee (Sp. Appearance)
Released
January 17th, 2003
Summary
Dil Ka Rishta has had little support even from its target audience, the family. While the performances
have been appreciated the striking similarity to Dushman and Tum Bin are
very obvious. Jism with its low budget has taken the initial
rounds from Dil Ka Rishta (It´s budget is almost double that of Jism).
Final Verdict
It is too early to give a final verdict, as family movies like DKR have a
tendency of bouncing back, but all indications are that Bipasha Basu may
win this battle.

Film
Jism
Starring
Bipasha Basu, John Abraham, Gulshan Grover, Harsh Vasishtha, Anahita Uberoi, and Vinay Pathak
Released
January 17th, 2003
Summary
Like Raaz, a small budget, small release pattern and extensively different promotion campaign was expected to work the magic for Pooja Bhatt´s Jism. Of course, the sex helps as well. Many may attribute the success of the film to the erotic promotions and the scenes in the film, as in "Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai". In any case, the budget of Jism at 4.5 - 5 crores as half of that of Dil Ka Rishta´s and this will affect the comparison. In any case, Jism is on its way to be a success.
Final Verdict
It is too early to give a final verdict, though Jism seems like it will at least be an average earner at the box office.

Film
Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai
Starring
Priyanshu Chatterjee, Om Puri, Farida Jalal, Sakshi Shivanand

Released
January 10th, 2003
Summary
The movie has not been able to do a Tum Bin this time. The collections have been just about average. Even with its low price the movie has to get reasonable collections in the 2nd week to cover its cost. It will have its best business in Delhi-UP and will not lose money. In the Mumbai territory it still has a lot to do to not be considered a loser. While Hyderabad -Nizam and overseas have had reasonable collections, Kolakata and suburbs are just about OK. All India Collection gross are around 1.6-1.7 crores. First week percentages range from 60% (Mumbai), 37% (Delhi), 62% (Kolkata) and 65% (Kanpur, 6 day figures).

Final Verdict
Despite its low price the road ahead for APBKDH is difficult in Mumbai territory, CP and CI. The film has to hold its collections to recover its cost. The best collections will come from Delhi-UP, Nizam and Kolkata.

Film
Talaash
Starring
Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor

Released
January 3rd, 2003
Summary
The movie has had a reasonable 2nd week in North India, Bihar and Gujarat (part of the Mumbai territory). While it cannot be called a success, it cannot be termed as a washout either in most of India, except the Mumbai territory where it will lose close to 40-50 lakhs.
In fact, in Delhi-UP it has crossed 2 crores in two weeks and that will be some
consolation for the producer Mr. Nihalani who himself distributed the movie
here. The South province has had a good first week but followed up with an
ordinary 2nd week. In the eastern province the collections from Bihar are quite reasonable
while in East Punjab and CI it will cover its cost. All India Gross up to 2nd week- 8.0 -8.1 cr.

Final Verdict
While the movie has been a disappointment for the Suneel
Darshan - Akshay duo, its performance, particularly in North India, South Bihar, Hyderabad -Nizam and Ahmedabad does provide some consolation for the
Talaash team as it has done reasonably well in these regions. However, the film will
lose in the Mumbai Territory.
