Devdas sweeps Zee cine awards

IANS

MUMBAI: The opulent tragedy Devdas has swept the popular Zee Fairglow Cine Awards here but the choice of some winners seems to have left fans unhappy.

At a star-studded ceremony on Saturday night, the operatic epic by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali won for Best Film, Best Director for Bhansali, Best Actor for Shah Rukh Khan and Best Actress for Aishwarya Rai.

Hema Malini bagged the Lifetime Achievements award.

The Best Supporting Actor and Actress award went to Vivek Oberoi and Sushmita Sen for "Company" and "Filhaal" respectively. Vivek went home with another award _ Best Male Debutant.

Sushmita's winning the supporting actress award, however, seemed odd to many as she not only had the meatier parts and greater footage in "Filhaal" but was also had critics raving about her acting skills.

Her co-star in the film, Tabu, had been nominated for best actress.

Incidentally, there was a major goof-up on stage when clippings from another Sushmita-starrer "Tumko Na Bhool Payenge" were shown on the video monitor on stage when Sushmita's nomination for "Filhaal" was announced.

As for Vivek, it was a foregone conclusion that he would win the Best Debutant award, as there were no other new faces worth the mention last year.

But again, the Best Supporting Actor award for him disappointed some in the audience who felt it should have gone to Sushant Singh for his portrayal of Bhagat Singh's associate in Raj Kumar Santoshi's "The Legend Of Bhagat Singh".

Also, bypassing popular choice Ismail Durbar for "Devdas", the award for Best Music Composer was shared jointly by Nadeem-Shravan for "Raaz" and A.R Rahman for "Saathiya".

Ajay Devgan won the award for Best Performance In A Negative Role in "Deewangee".

Rahman's efforts in "The Legend Of Bhagat Singh" were not recognised although everyone, including the composer, felt his songs in the historical film were far more exciting and original than the songs in "Saathiya" which were largely transposed from the Tamil original.

Even more oddly, Mahesh Bhatt was honoured for Best Screenplay for "Raaz" -- the film was appropriated from two Hollywood films "Basic Instinct" and "What Lies Beneath" -- and "Company" took home the award for Best Story when in the opinion of director Ram Gopal Varma, "'Company' has no story".

Hey Ali!

I'm very upset that Rani Mukherjee didn't win for best actress. I'm mad that SRK won for Devdas, because Ajay Devgan deserved it, but he still won for Best Villian.

Sushmita Sen gave her best performance in Filhaal. But the only award that Devdas truly deserved besides best choreography for Kahe Ched Mohe was Ms. Dixit as supporting actress.

At least Saathiya won four awards!

I am glad Sush has been appreciated rightfuly again, Her performance was really heartwarming in Filhaal, even stealin g scenes from TABU at occasions, simillar to her achievments in BIWI #1, where she stole show from heroine Karisma kapoor, rightfully!

I thought that Sush's role would have given her a best actress nod, and while I wished that Madhuri won the supporting actress award, I am still happy that Sushmita got some form of recognition for her powerful performance in Filhaal.

I'm foreseeing though Madhuri taking supporting actress for Filmfare and the other major awards shows.

As long as either Ajay Devgan or Shahrukh Khan won for best actor I am happy, and thus, I am happy!

Yeah some of the ones that were leaked out are wrong.

But the awards were held on the 11th, and Zee said they would be shown on TV on the 16th.
