What is your opinon on have DTS and Dolby Digital on one DVD disc for an Indian film?

Can the audio bit rate really harm the picture quality? I have seen many excellent American DVDs like Gladiator that have a long running time and yet still has decent picture, and sound quality.

Wots your opinon as many Indian companies are going DTS this year after the sucess of Tamilini's Song DVD...

Expect a Devdas DTS DVD really soon!

The reason that Hollywood companies are able to do it properly is because they have much better encoders than Indian DVD companies. Look at Lagaan for example, CT fit the whole movie on one disc with some supplements and had a low bitrate for most of the feature. Yet the quality was better than most Indian DVD's because they posess better encoders. Indian companies need to figure out the abc's of encoding properly before attempting to fit a 3hr movie with both DD5.1 and DTS tracks.

Malfunxion is right. I'm sure that the Hollywood studios are constantly upgrading their hardware and software so that they can provide better video with lower bitrates. This is how you see DVDs with a 5.1 track, two 2.0 commentaries, and extra video supplements. The longest film I've seen on one DVD with both DD and DTS tracks is the Pulp Fiction SE. It is 154 minutes long and has no supplements aside from the subtitle commentary on disc one.

Sunny, you mention that many companies will be doing DTS now. Do you know who will be doing this?

and lets not forget the average running time of a hindi film...

will cramming a three hour movie, with DTS and DD affect the quality of the visuals? YES.

Using the available space efficiently, I think a 2 1/2 hour movie with DD and DTS is doable. But I do not know of any DVDs longer than that with both tracks. The DTS version of Dances with Wolves, released several years ago, was on 2 discs.

Since Prasad author around 70% of present Indian DVD release it is likely that all companies will opt for DTS. TAMILINI got the DTS DVD done at Prasad and have gained much postive response from the Tamil audience feedback. Prasad has informed me that they sent a copy to EROS at thier request who are looking into going DTS. If EROS goes ahead with a dual DTS and Dolby Digital track then it is likely that all of the companies will jump in the bandwagon (with exception to BEI and Aynagran).

Ayngaran will release small titles under 130 mins with dual DTS and Dolby. However on bigger titles they will release the film as a two disc special edtion having a Dolby on disc one and DTS on the other disc (similar to THE GRINCH ultimate 2 dvd edition)

My view is the same as you guys. Companies should first fix thier picture quality before selling us other flashy gimmicks.

Eros started doing anamorphic and it hasn't made their video any better. I've read here that recent Eros 5.1 releases like Devdas and Shakti have poor soundtracks. So DTS Eros DVDs will not be a particularly good step for the consumer. But since Eros is willing to slap "16x9 Enhanced Anamorphic Widescreen" on their crappy DVDs, putting a DTS logo isn't too much trouble for them. If Ayngaran does do the 2-disc option, will it mean an increase in prices?

Though I hate to defend Eros but that is not true. Devdas's 5.1 sountrack is excellent and very dynamic but I don't know about Shakti.

I'd love to hear an indian movie with DTS sound but i think indian dvd producers should first try to get the picture quality right. Then worry about DTS!!! I woundn't want DTS if it comes at the cost of sacrificing picture quality. Even if an indian movie comes out with DTS sound right now how many indian movie viewers actually have a DTS setup in their homes to enjoy it, i'd say less than 5%!!!!!!!!

I think it is alright...Go ahead, Eros put DTS on your discs..your picture quality is shit anyway...it won't matter anyway.. :D

Yep!!If Eros want to further f*up their dvds!ok, they have all the rights!

I dont think they will be selling their stuff sole on DTS basis!!on 1/4 bit rate!!

Guys!!Come on!!stay focused!!

A properly authored dvd, from genuine clean source , in prog format, with proper color balance, AR, anamorphic enhanced true 16x9 if wide screen, only necessary extras!!

properly remixed, proper 5.1 sound, if in 5.1, if not plsss, for godsake dont digitally enhance that orig/mono/stereo/dolby surround....to pseudo 5.1 that is shitty, noisy, hissy, crackly, keep dvnr to minimum,..

use proper genuine media,

charge reasonable price,

If they want to do DTS, they can come out with 2 versions originally, one with DD, single disc!and other both DD/DTS double disc!?possibly and see how many takers they have for those special editions!!

But!!Imho, yahan, aawa ka aawa bigda hai, sab chor andarkhami miley haen, ab DTS jaebaen nichodney ka naya trick hai!!...so bottom line!!

BEWARE!!of these black and white crook logaan!! se!! :baaa:

DTS is largely an urban myth.

A group of audiophiles did double blind comparisons of DTS-encoded and Dolby-encoded versions of the same soundtrack, and could not discern a quality difference.

Investigation shows that there are DTS versions that sound better, but this comes from DTS making a point of doing careful engineering to produce better sound, not from the DTS encoders. In other words, if the DTS engineers had done exactly the same thing and used a Dolby encoder, they would have produced a Dolby DVD that was also better than the original Dolby release.

So, if mediocre engineers use DTS encoders, it will sound exactly the same as the Dolby track they do. If both soundtracks are put on a DVD with a 3 hour or longer Hindi film, then the picture quality will be worse (The limit for a DVD-9 disk without compromising picture quality is considered to be roughly 2:45 and that is with one 5.1 soundtrack, not two.)

To summarize then, DTS DVDs often sound better than the original Dolby DVDs not because DTS encoding is better, but because DTS engineers take more time (they don't have the original DVD deadline) and pay more attention to sound quality.
