I Picked up Laggan from Local Best Buy this morning. Great Movie. Mediocre Video Transfer. Good DD5.1.
NOT UPTO COLUMBIA TRISTAR STANDARD.
Worse than Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragen.
NOT WORTH $22.99 I PAID.

The dvd is worse than crouching tiger :vangry: and not even worth $22.99. What the hell did CT did to this dvd? Is the bit rate very bad??

Yes. It is worse than Crouching Tiger by Columbia which experts had agreed was a poor xfer.
Chapter 5 of Lagaan has verticle pixel lines going thru entire picture for almost 30 seconds. Many other chapters shows that original print used is not of the best quality.
There is not much supplemental material except one deleted scene.
There are no SONG markers which really sucks because the songs are really worth watching again and again if you can find them!
Columbia really did a quick and dirty job. Amir Khan probably has no say in this. He got his money.
Best Buy actually had the DVD on shelf last Tuesday! Talking to sales guy, he said they have sold 5 since Tuesday and have only 5 more in stock!! Good for them.

I hope they release a 2-disc Superbit version.

Hi arsh, mybutchi... is it possible if you could get screen shot of the Lagaan dvd. Though I think there's no point in boycotting since I have pre-ordered already. Lagaan is a truely unique movie and experience, CT should have taken that in consideration. But I am not sure if I should be glad that things turn out this way since I very sure CT would have cut out the songs if they had their way. I think two disc was never on their agenda. Also I have watched the making of Lagaan music and I had it somewhere on VHS, contains nothing much but Aamir and Javed Akhtar talking about the music and lyrics. As far as I know there is no "making of Lagaan". This is probably because Aamir did not allow any other filming on location as that would possibly leak out the cricket parts.

I think we should all be just glad that a classic film such as lagaan and its dvd rights didn't fall into the wrong hands of big companies in India like EROS, YRF, or Video Sound(US based). Well, the only benefit YRF would have given to LAGAAN if they had done its DVD, they would have definilty included some interesting extras (ie. The Spirit of Lagaan 'making of lagaan music' and even interviews with cast/crew members). I wonder how DEI would have treated the DVD of lagaan if they had acquired its worldwide rights? :wot:
perhaps maybe another superb collectors edition DVD like KNPH, HDDCS and/or HSSH

Actually I am very glad that CT is doing Lagaan and not any Indian dvd company. Because even if Lagaan is as bad as it sounds, no other dvd company would have given Lagaan the publicity and attention that CT is able to give.

Sorry Michael! for delayed responce to your reply, I watch my dvd on rear projection HDTV, Pioneer elite pro 710,64 inch(in my knowledge, one of highly acclaimed in industry tv), with prog scan Sony DSN 400P dvd player, in prog scan mode, with progscan 420p component hook up!!!
and i'll say still FIZA by spark/dei was better dvd transfer than lagaan, beside if squishing was problem or not!!
CTHD was not my favourite transfer as i found it far below superior than CT's FIFTH ELEMENT and MASK OF ZORO etc!!!

LAGAAN is a BIG LET DOWN by CT and a SHAME and SLAP on HINDI DVD quality expectations..BETRYAL..i would say!!I think their GANDHI was a better dvd than this one, i am not comparing it with LAWRENCE OF ARABIA..that's the treatment LAGAAN desrved or at least like GANDHI!!rest you guys will find out soon!!!I am depressed and disappointed!!

Ok, your system is quite good. Looks like CT screwed up
indeed. My copy is in the mail. Once I have seen it and
I think it's unjustifiably bad as well I'll help organising
a protest. The goal should be to ask for a superbit version
if the low bit rate is the main problem. If Lagaan is
nominated and wins chances are ok we can make a difference.
The DVD of Lawrence of Arabia has way too much edge enhancement, by the way. CT screwed this one up as well.

CT could have used the Interview A.R. Rahman did for UK digital based channel BBC Choice on the music of this film, it was half and hours long and full of interesting info on how he found the music of Lagaan. Also an isolated score track could have been extracted from Rahman himself who keeps all of his actually scores on computer. Persoanlly I am waiting for the region two version, which might improve as CT did with Sixth Day & Das Boot.

I was actually watching my 'old' dvd of Lagaan last night, and i think I will not be forking out for the new copy even though it has a good 5.1 track, was really hoping for the 1st DTS release.

I think you people had too much expectations from this dvd and that is very sad. The film already had problems with the length so how come everyone expected DTS, Isolated score, Making ofs, Interviews. That would been great but this is a Hindi movie, get real! You think CT will get into this dvd that much?

Surprise!
By clicking at this link you not only access that page, but when there, you can access thousands of detailed Hollywood DVD reviews which are not supposed to be accessible. Enjoy.

I just hope, I am at no risk.

Well CT are a large company I'm sure they can fork out for some extra features as they do on other titles.

I think it is time to start a protest at the least. Although any protest that we lodge with Columbia for Lagaan may not have any benefit right away and/or with the DVD of Lagaan. But it shall definately have an impact on Columbia vis avis any future Indian DVDs that Columbia might produce. IT is for this reason that I feel it is very important for us to lodge our protest now and strongly with Coluumbia.

As far as any boycott of Lagaan DVD is concerned. I think it is a bad idea, rather we should go all out to support it's sales so as to encourage Columbia to produce more Indian DVDs and also if they see there is a market for the product then they will do more justice to Indian DVDs in future in terms of quality and extras.

I agree, we should all buy the dvd to show CT how big the Indian market is but at the same we should write to CT about the poor presentation of Lagaan
