Hello,

What are your Top 5 Indian films from the era before 1970 ?

(I'm talking about the films themselves, not the picture quality.)

I'm struggling to remember 5 that I have even watched, pre-70s, never mind come up with a top 5

I suppose Mughal-E-Azam, Mother India and a few of Raj Kapoor films will be contenders.

ARADHANA
DEVDAS
MERE MEHBOOB
MOTHER INDIA
MUGHAL E AZAM

Out of all of these, ARADHANA is probably my favorite, as it makes me cry every time. DEVDAS is a haunting film, with one of the best performances in history by Dilip Kumar. And MERE MEHBOOB, even though it isn't a very good film, the songs really upstage everything else.

Very difficult request indeed!
Let's see, excluding titles already listed, here are my five favorites (...for today)

*PYAASA (1957 - Guru Dutt, dir.)
*BANDINI (1963 - Bimal Roy, dir.; star: Nutan)
*TEESRI KASAM (1966 - stars: Raj Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman)
*JAGTE RAHO (1966 - star: Raj Kapoor)
*SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM (1962 - stars: Meena Kumari, Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman)

also noteworthy: Bimal Roy's DO BIGHA ZAMIN ('53), Raj Kapoor's BARSAAT ('49), SATYAKAM ('69) and my sentimental favorite - DOSTI ('64)

Thanks for the replies.

But, please do not "add" to other's selections. I am not looking for possibilities, as I have Raj's list of 100 films.

I am looking for consensus "best", which is why I asked for "Your Top 5".

For example, a few years ago, when I had seen very few Hindi films, I used similar lists of all time Top 10s, and I made a point of seeing the films that were on many people's lists, such as "Sholay", "KKHH" and others.

Usually films that only one person thinks is great may not have appeal to me, if I don't have the same life-experiences as the other viewer. But, films that most think are great (like Sholay) usually will appeal to me because they have widespread appeal.
