There are so many Urdu words used in Hindi movies that it sometimes confuses me. For example, in 'Devdas' Madhuri tells Aishwarya to search her house for Devdas if she wants - 'Tasalli kar lo' - but then after searching Ash says 'Tasalli hui, ki Dev is duniya mein akele nahin rahe'. In the first instance 'Tasalli' is taken to mean a search or quest, in the second it means 'relief' or 'satisfaction'. I thought it meant 'relief' to begin with. Am I wrong?

Kabir, on the contrary. Even in the first line it means satisfy urself... the emphasis is on satisfaction..... but what it implied was search and satisfy yourself....

so the proper meaning of that line would be

(search and) satisfy yourself ! ... would be a proper way of analyzing the sentence

This is one of those many instances where literal translations don't help much. Tasalli has the same meaning either way.

"Tasalli" means feeling better (ie. relaxing, chilling or whatever else).

In the first context ('Tasalli kar lo') means "You should relax/feel better that....."

The second time ('Tasalli hui, ki Dev is duniya mein akele nahin rahe') it means "I feel better that ......."

I think satisfaction doesn't really fit here. Satisfaction is for something someone actually did for someone.

When one says "satisfy yourself," it seems like they mean it negatively.

Hey Pillai,
Kabir's interpretation, IMO, is more appropriate here...

When Madhuri states that "Tasalli kar lo"... It implies that Ash has an insatiable desire to know the truth (abt Devdas's whereabouts) and Madhuri wants her to satisfy that desire....

The second line follows from the first line.....and there is a tinge of sarcasm in that statement...(you call that a negative trait)... but thats the way the statement was meant to be...

"Tasalli hui, ki Dev is duniya mein akele nahin rahe"... You can also interpret that as Jealousy...
