ASOKA R1 is a PAL to NTSC transfer and hence does get the honour of
THE WORST INDIAN FILM DVD
among official releases.

BTW, ASOKA R2 is among the top 5 Indian DVDs available today. Yes, it does play on R1 DVD players if they can handle PAL. For example, PC DVD drives, APEX etc.

R2 is definitely better but I wouldn’t go as far as calling the Asoka NTSC DVD the worst DVD ever - its a decent DVD just not as good as the R2 DVD.

Is there a screenshot comparison between both versions available anywhere?

BTW I dont think Asoka R1 is the worst ever among official releases. Its pretty bad, but at least you can tell whats going on. For really horrible transfers you should check out MGM's releases on DVD of French films. Those take the prize.

Try http://www.dvdconcept.com/?page=shop/fl ... t_id=24383 - they have for £9.99 and should be able to ship to USA.

Play.com still has it for £7.99 but unfortunately don’t ship to USA.

I just bought this from amazon the other day for $11.00 and it had a released date of Dec 11th. Didn't this dvd come out a while back by first look? so why the release again?

Also the quality of this dvd is horrible. I get fuzzy lines as soon as there is motion, and you guessed it that would be the whole movie. It's also only 150 minutes. is this a shorter version or something?

where can I get a good copy and perhaps one that is unedited?

I wish more people buy it from main lile stores and return it. Indian DVD makers may not care about Indian market, but when refunds are asked by Amazon.com type stores, they will have to listen.

North American ASOKA DVD is not only a copy, it has been converted from PAL to NTSC.

Go for the PAL DVD and play it on PC DVD player. It's one of the best Indian DVDs.

But say guys ( and pardon the ignorant question), arent all DVD players (at least most) programmable to make them region insensitive....i think i had in the past seen a site that used to give out remote-key combinations to force DVD players to accepts DVDs from any region.....whats the scoop on that one??

if indeed this were possible there would not be a need to restrict yourself to NTSC or PAL dvds, right ?

PAL or NTSC is one thing, Region is another.
Metrodome ASOKA is in PAL and will not olay on most of the DVD players in North America. It is Region zero though. Hence it does play on PC DVDs.
